if you buy an rtr, then replace wheels, tires, and links, you'll be close, if not over, the $250 mark. Replace the electronics, body, chassis, you're already beyond that.
With building from your own parts, nothing is wasted, nothing is thrown away. If you're looking at money, value, and or environmentally, building your own is best.
    Great build.

I would have gone with the Meus axles, they are $89 on Amazon, have a tighter turn angle, and are already made of brass. They also come with an adjustable servo tray on the front. The set i got also came with the over driven front gears as well as the standard gears.

Cool build. Every time I go to the hobby shop, these Axial mini crawlers call out to me😂. Wife and I started crawling with a pair of TRX4M High Trails, and we are enjoying slowly upgrading them. I'll snag an Axial one of these days and give it the treatment as well.

Waiting on mine to build from scratch. To mix it up I'm going to try using Meus trailing arms. Also, Injora makes a 10th scale rear taillight that fits this as well as having some pretty sweet side skids.

I bought a deadbolt, fried the servo within a week or so, bought a servo, and overdrive trans with a motor a few weeks later. Decided to buy wheels, and tires…found cheap carbon fiberish lcg frame for cheap…add cheap links for stretch, oops micro Komodo Lizard pro…still sitting here with a 3/4 built comp rig, and loving the process.

Just over $300 isn't bad at all. You got to buy the base SCX24 first for $100-150 then you have your build/upgrade budget of $200. So to start with a kit and change everything out is $300-350. I think your better off just buying what you want and building it from scratch. It's about the same cost and no extra parts laying around. Thanks for making great videos like this, keep it up.

Very helpful Video. I think that as a beginner its totally hard to know what will work and what you want and know without trying a lot of stuff and spending a lot of money. I spent a fortune on SCX24 stuff these last years and due to time still not really have sth. decent running, boxes of parts, several unfinished rigs.

I’m glad injora released ascent 18 overdrive and underdrive now. Overdrive is what my truck needed next. The 11% underdrive for the scx24 will be nice. I have 33% ud in my ax24 and the motor overheats so I ordered the 11% ud for the front and that will give it the ideal 20%-25% od

The benefit of starting with the basic off the shelf unit is learning the shortcomings of it. I’m building my first comp type rig from my original deadbolt, looks like the only factory parts I may be keeping is the rear links, axle housings, receiver, and radio.

  • @modernart86
    @modernart86 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

This is a great video for anyone looking for the answer to that question. And in all honesty you do save money in the long run. But… If this is going to be your first rc or crawler or small scale rc of this nature, then I highly recommend buying a rtr kit so you can see the differences with each upgrade and appreciate the performance with each passing upgrade you do to it over time. Now if you already have one and just want another rig then this will definitely be the best route by building from scratch. I have one that I got as an rtr kit and over time upgraded parts and electronics here and there and now the truck is completely modified with no stock parts left to change and now I can literally build a stock one again with all my stock parts. Just need to buy some hardware to screw it all together and I’ll have a running stock rtr again lol. My main reason for a first time buyer of this category to start from rtr is for them to be able to play with it right away, experience the differences that each upgrades make while still being able to enjoy their vehicle, and learning the way the vehicle is put together and how each parts work for it. Once you’ve learned all that and know the ins and outs of the scx24 or whichever chassis you’re choosing to scratch build, then sky is the limit and you might as well start from scratch and build it how you want with all the upgrades you know you’re going to do right away and skip the payment for the rtr kit that’s gonna be tossed away in the end anyway 👍🏻

Hey Adam, I haven’t read any of the comments here, but i think you did better than you think with the budget on this build. Because, in total if you had modified a donor stock vehicle, you would have the added price of paying the cost of the truck, and buying the upgrades after.

  • @toycoma98

I first started with a Deadbolt rtr and put a toyota pickup model kit body, after buying a lot aftermarket parts, i was left with stock parts. So i ended up building a complete stock deadbolt out of all the stock parts and some aftermarket. Just needed a radio. I recently moved on to another hobby (retro handhelds), i might get back into crawling again later.
I think its better to start from scratch and build a complete aftermarket rig rather than buying an rtr.
Tactic TTX300 radio is pretty good and affordable.

Great video. After having bought and upgraded an scx, and now in the progress of building 2 from the ground up, I just don’t see the point of buying the rtr. There really isn’t much on the stock truck worth the original purchase price. The aftermarket for these trucks is so plentiful.

I have a similar mb build. Bronco links furitek motor and esc, mofo x15 but in billet and I added the heavy brass knuckles. However wheel clearance is an issue now. Put a mofo servo beast on the front frame is a kiwi green pearl and the body is a white pearl. Hand painting the interior. Oh boy.

I think it's a false economy to get the RTR for less money initially, and then slowly upgrade it. In every instance where I've done incremental upgrades, I would have saved money by building the "final form" from the get go.
REALLY great looking build! Definitely the kind of truck I'd look at obsessively haha. Also, nice choice on the C-Bolt link combination. That's my favorite wheelbase for the scx24 by far.

Adam, your videos are getting better and better. And since the start of the channel it seems you have learned a lot about the minis. All you need now is a dremel tool or proxxon or whatever. Makes much more fun to build with such a tool.
And what do you think about injora axles and motor instead of mofo? Would be cheaper and much better than stock.
    All in all great build!

Thank you! I considered those options. If you needed to bring the cost down I wouldn’t hesitate to get either of those. I think the Injora motor is smoother and prefer it I think. I went with the mofo axles because of the added width, strength, and included servo mount

Of course its more economical to buy RTR. But that means you don't plan on buying any upgrades. Because once you buy upgrades you need to add that to the total cost.
