In this Video we make a tenon and a recess and then we cut the bowls in half to study the advantages and disadvantages of each. I show the procedures of turning both and samples of turnings using both Tenon and Recesses.

I've been turning for about a year now. I've created three huge piles of sawdust! Ha ! I started when I was 72 I'm now 73 and wish I had started when I was 20. I have fallen in ❤️ with turning.. I think I have made every mistake 😕 possible, some twice, most mistakes continuously !!!
I do real good making mushrooms but BOWL making still alludes me. I have made a few bowls with no bottoms or holes in the bottoms. And some with the sides cut out. User error. Ha ha. But live and learn. I tell myself all the time. (It's not rocket science) and that. I can do it.. I know I can just takes practice. I enjoyed your lecture on how and why to use a recess. I learned something. Thank you. 😊
I own a Mini on one table and a full size on another. Ha I out grew my Mini in 4 months. Ha ha. Just wanted to say thanks and I joined!

Terrific instruction video Dean. Very logical explanation for you methods. I have usually done recesses as it allows me to finish a bowl quicker but didn't give the draw backs much thought. I have also avoided having a foot on my bowls but I think I am going to change my thinking on that as well. Thanks

Good video, Dean! I recently did my 4th bowl (walnut) and had it jump off the lathe twice while hollowing the inside. I was using a tenon but had the 35mm spigot jaws on the chuck. After the second un-mounting in these jaws, the tenon was crushed. Using the proper jaws would have been a good idea. Your video showed me two things - make a proper tenon for proper "bowl" jaws and PRACTICE on some cheap pine!

Skip That is a difficult question there are too many varibles for me to make suggestions about speed. If you do not feel comfortable slow it down. Thanks for Watching!!!
For some reason my tenons have been slipping off my chuck but my mortises don't. So I make mortises, but perhaps I should get a different chuck. The one I have uses these leavers to tighten rather than a turn key.
Some really good duct tape will probably get them halves back together.. Thanks Dean great insight..

Thanks for the explanation. I have never understood the desire for a small base on a bowl. It may be ok for a decorative (dust catching) bowl, but for a functional bowl (i.e. drain and dump the Green Beans in a bowl) it is too tippy.

Great video. Just getting into turning bowls and this answered a LOT of questions. A bit off topic, but what speed are you turning? and do you have a video of what speed to turn?
I do not have a speed readout and speed is very relative if it seems too fast slow down. Thanks for Watching!!!

I recently received a lathe, but have never used one. I am left handed. All the videos look geared toward right handed methods. Are there any different methods for us lefties?
Cindy I turn both left and right handed this gives me the benifit of being able to put my body in the best position for the cut. Both have advantages and if possible practice both ways. It can be awkward making some cuts left handed. Mike Mahoney is left handed if you get a chance to see his videos. Thanks for Watching!!!

I use a recess, because then I can incorporate it into the foot/base rather than have to loose more material.

I know this video is not about turning technique, but you demonstrate something that is valuable to beginning turners (actually all turners). I have watched several of your videos and you seem to always try to make complete cuts with the bowl gouge, going from beginning to the end rather than starting and stopping. I think this technique is best way to end up with a "fair curve". Great work!

As a new turner, this was extremely helpful. I’ve done four small bowls with recesses so far and a bud vase. I’ll try a tenon on my next bowl.
