    My first video using a teleprompter, so apologies for the fast talking. I'm still working on getting the correct speed for presentations down, and I couldn't really fix it in post-production without messing up the video. If you're interested in listening to me talk slower, click on the Settings (Gear icon) and you can change the speed to 0.75. That helps a lot.

    The app "old maps" have maps of this area since the 1800's. All the variations of the river just like you explained. Thanks for making these videos.

    Great job on this series! Love learning more about the history of flood control on the Mississippi River! Hope to see more!

    Young man you do an outstanding job on these videos. I recommend the book ‘Beyond Control” the Mississippi River’s New Channel to the Gulf of Mexico by James F. Barnett Jr. Keep up the great work.

      Any other books you’d recommend on the Mississippi or just rivers in general?

      @@north-shoregcs3894 I learned about this story in John McPhee's book The Control of Nature. It's hard to follow there, so this video helped me understand a lot. You might give it a look, though, it has two other very interesting chapters -- one on the mountains eroding into Los Angeles, and another on Iceland's efforts in 1973 to reroute the outflow of an erupting volcano.

    Thanks for the awesome uploads. Had I had a teacher like you I'm pretty sure I'd be working for the corps of engineers at this point. I'm Fascinated with the information you have here.

    Hi Mr Klein my father started taking me fishing south of Natchez Ms. 63 years ago.I have a camp on Deer Park lake the corp of engineer placed weirs in the fiver north of OldRiver control and we flood every year now because of the river silting in between the weirs narrowing the channel leaving the river no place to go but up.

    One comment that I would add about a flaw in the US’ levees-only policy was that it was assumed that the velocity profile of the water was uniform, ie, the currents and the bottom of the water column was nearly to the top currents. This is not true and is partially a result of the amount of sediment load this is concentrated at the bottom. As a result, the scouring capability diminishes as you go from the top to the bottom.

    • @jasonclark6194
      @jasonclark6194 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, the current isn't consistent from top to bottom. They change drastically by various different reasons. Wind, depth, direction (curves, bends ex.) But normally the bottom isn't as fast as the surface so this disproves the theory water cut the grand canyon over a course of years and years.
