    Do you add CO2 to your greenhouse?

    • @thejarjosh
      @thejarjosh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The predictions of increased CO2 long after the end of the Modern Maximum(1914-2015) continuing to warm the globe are based on model projections and by no means guaranteed.
      I think you're the same creator I saw the geothermal pump through underground hose ac system. So you'll probably be fine either way.
      Almost all of our actual measured(with precision instruments) climate data comes from within this extended period of increased solar activity. The last one was the Medieval Maximum. The Wolf Sporer Maunder and lastly The Dalton Minima occurred over the centuries between the Medieval Maximum and the Modern.
      All I'm saying is trust the "experts" all you want. But be prepared for either outcome. A warming or cooling world. To me looking over all the data and the policy that's driving the debate. It really seems to be more motivated by a carbon tax than any real science showing it's only warmed during the Modern Maximum because the earth created a species to help release all that stored carbon it desperately needs to continue sustaining life.
      One last thing How plants respond to a sudden increase in CO2 and how they can adapt over longer periods are two different things. Over decades of gradually increasing CO2 as opposed to turning a knob and creating a greatly elevated CO2 environment, the plants have more time to respond to the changes with less stress.

    • @thejarjosh
      @thejarjosh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can't predict the future climate any more than the "experts" can but since the end of the Modern Maximum down here in Texas year after year it's been colder than usual.
      Earlier this year I got to build a real snow man life size and all. Before this year I'd never seen a snow covered ground. We've had small amounts of snow but never enough to cover the ground.
      The artic sea ice extent was supposedly going to be mostly gone in the summers by 2013 and again 2015. I believe the predictions were Jay Zwally NASA 2013 and some Navy representative 2015.
      2012 is still record minimum. Nature once again did the exact opposite of what the "experts" predicted.
      The only way they can claim to predict temperature increases is because they run 100s of simulations and have predicted every possible outcome through the brute force method. It's easy to hit the bullseye with 100 darts.
      This Solar Maximum we will see somewhat normal temps but the actual scientist(as opposed to the grand minimum youtube experts selling you survival goods claiming it's already upon us) looking into a possible grand solar minimum in the forecast estimate the start around the 2030s.
      The model study claiming only .3c from a grand minimum cant account for changes in volcanic activity or cloud cover during the minimum. They claim with confidence to know things they aren't even capable of knowing.

I thin 5000 or 6000 ppm will kill you. CO2 meters are cheap. Must have. Just need to figure out how I'm going to produce it o. The cheap. One guy brewed beer for CO2. ;). Hard to go wrong with that!

    In the '70's we did greenhouse studies concerning CO2. This is the hidden fact amongst the Climate Change crowd. Our planet is actually suffering from a CO2 drought. NASA discovered a few years back the effect of large mono cropping on atmospheric CO2. during daylight hours CO2 concentrations in soybean, corn wheat fields drop precipitously from the current sub 400PPM to 100PPM. in these studies in the '70's it was determined that it was safe to have CO2 levels at 1,500PPM. This concentration allowed crops to require less water, less fertilizer, less pesticide use while producing more robust crops.

Knocked out 1972 when I didn't know the University of Arizona was working on the same project. Growth was almost double. But too much Co2 will result in a lack of fertility.

    Another way of adding CO2 is very similar to that of making wine, you simply have to have an organic culture, hopefully with mycorrhizae or other types of fungi such as Trichoderma, since they breathe o2 and generate the precious CO2, you just have to maintain the Adequate temperatures in the pots (hopefully geotextile pots since they breathe better) and fans that point from the pots towards the leaves since the CO2 tends to go to the lowest, in the same way we promote the circulation of o2 so that the roots can breathe and fungi can generate CO2. On a serious note. I use CO2 injection for my aquarium. We use a pH/KH chart to figure out how many ppm are dissolved in the water. Plants grow much faster, denser, and have more vibrant colors! As added benefits they soak up toxic wastes, such as nitrates, like a sponge and out compete algae for nutrients with more ease.

    I like the idea of growing something that produces CO² instead of buying a machine or the substance itself.
    Yeast is OK, but Lactic Acid Bacteria also produce CO².
    The LAB is one of the main species used in Korean Natural Farming.
    Better than making alcoholic beverages might be alcohol fuel.
    An alcohol flame produces water vapor and CO².
    If burned a lamp with an incandescent mantle, you might produce heat, light and CO² in one go.
    A biodigester is another way to grow your own CO².
    In addition to the CO² created during the digestion process, the burning of the methane produced will result in more CO².
    Again, this can be done in a incandescent lamp to create multiple benefits.

    CO2 is useless when the lights are off / Sun is down. Reduce CO2 from fermenter by reducing temperature at night. Mechanical controls for CO2 tanks are available from Titan Controls (expensive) and Vivosun, or just turn off manually for small scale.

  • @engelag
    @engelag 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Because CO2 helps photosythesis, does this mean that when there are no sources of light - sun or lights, the CO2 enrichment doesn't help. Plant respiration is continuous. Respiration needs oxygen, so don't drop the O2 too much.
    Animals produce CO2 and heat. Wood pellet stoves also produce heat and CO2 - careful about dropping O2 too much; need a flow through of fresh air in, and venting some inside out.

    Interesting presentation, and how easy it is to slip into the "Green Revolution" narrative of "Faster and Bigger is Better"! Nutrient density is the key here that you do not touch on. Are these pumped up veggies more nutrient dense. I have seen data that indicates more CO2 does not add up to more nutrients. Dan Kitterage has done work on this as well as others.

    • @thejarjosh
      @thejarjosh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      CO2 on it's own doesn't add up to more nutrient dense veggies. However adjusting the nutrients you feed to a larger plant you could get the same nutrient density on a larger vegetable. If you give it too much though you could cause issues like nitrogen burn. That's true on a larger plant grown in elevated CO2 environment or for smaller plants. It's not like we're running short on nutrients for plants. We just need to design our agriculture more intelligently so we don't waste so much and cause problems with all the run off from fertilizing our crops.

    • @magapefarmshomestead6453
      @magapefarmshomestead6453 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      One way to test for nutrient density is with a refractometer. The higher the BRIX reading the higher the nutrient density. Don't be fooled by the narrative that BRIX measures only sugars, that is not true. It measures 'total soluble solids' thus nutrient density.

    • @atomizer2665
      @atomizer2665 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adjusting the nutrients wont necessarily translate into a higher nutrient density. Plants regulate their nutrient and water uptake mainly on light intensity and temperature. Optimize the environment before you consider CO2 enrichment or you will be fitting a NOS kit to an engine that is only firing on 2 cylinders

      @@SimpleTek OK. If you have some ideas on a bubbler I’d like to hear them. Right now I have a scrubber design. Here is how that works. The exhaust gas stack from the rocket stove enters through the side of a sealed 55-gal drum. Once inside the drum the pipe turns vertically. The exhaust stack inside the drum has a chimney rain cap on top to prevent water entry. The stack has holes angled downwards in the side of the pipe to let the exhaust gases out. Misters at the top of the drum spray water downwards scrubbing and cooling the exiting exhaust gas. A pump circulates the accumulated compost tea water in the bottom of the drum through the biochar filter and continuously circulates it back to the misters. (The tea can have anything in it that you want to add to the innoculated char, as long as it will not gunk up the filter). A closed loop heat exchanger in the water at the base of the drum transports heated water back to a radiator in the greenhouse. This also keeps the water in the drum from overheating. The gases exit the drum about in the middle of the opposite side of the drum. A drain prevents the accumulated water from rising above this exit pipe. A water tank provides makeup water so that the water level in the tank remains constant. A blower on the exhaust gas exiting from the drum maintains the negative pressure in the drum so that there is no backdraft and blows the smokeless CO2 Rich air back into the greenhouse. I also have to stress that this scheme only works with a hot clean burning rocket stove whose exhaust gases are CO2 and H2O. It will not work if you have incomplete combustion and are burning at low temperatures because you will have CO to deal with and creosote and soot will junk up the works. As to the bubbler, I need O2 to make the compost tea. I plan to pump ambient outside air into the drum to create the bubbler. That would add some O2 to the water and to the exit gas. It should be fine to do that as the drum is warm not hot and there is no fuel left to burn so there is no risk of combustion or fire.

      We plan to experiment with bubbling our exhaust gas from in-greenhouse our rocket stove through compost tea water to recover the CO2 which is then pumped back into the greenhouse. A heat exchanger in the tea recovers the waste heat and pumps it back into the greenhouse. The bubbled water is filtered through a biochar filter and composted. Works for us! Pollution is just an unused resource or a resource in the wrong place.

    is burning dry leaves and use the ash as fertilizer good enough? I guess only farmers can answer the question. in fact it isn't new ideas, in aquarium plant growing people use co2 for a long time. if those dry leaves are coming from certain kind of plant, the smoke repell insects too. the difficult part is, how much? how long and how it smell. tomato with smoky flavour? not ideal. is it good for farmers working inside? not ideal but can be resolve by a fan and open doors.
    but i believe it is a legit idea, just have to find someone with a greenhouse to field test. afterall, we are talking about just some dry leaves in a metal bucket. the difficult part is to find someone plan a measurable test and record how big the dose should be.

    Love what you're doing with this video and I'd like to add to what you're saying by refuting a little bit. The rising temperature changes that have been recorded around the globe are only increases in places that are cold and not already warm i.e. the deserts haven't been getting hotter, only the frozen tundras and poles are getting warmer. That's where these climate nutjobs get there crazy ideas from by mis reading basic charts with averages. They say "overall the planet is getting warmer". That's like saying that my grade point average is plummeting dramatically because although I have A's in 4 classes, I got a D in the 5th. Their claim makes it sound like I got B's in all of those classes that I had an A in, but in reality it's only a D in one class. Same thing with the planet getting warmer, it's only the super cold places getting warmer.

I'm not trying to be rude it's kinda funny but I only noticed cause I was trying to see how much they cost was paying attention to the background and I noticed it was a CO meter. But hey listen this is a hot button topic but I live I'm northern canada it's 20-30degree c weather now for next month or so 30 is hot...most of the years it's below 20....or freezing during winter months. Gets quite cold at night even this time of year. I was trying to find out and it's too.charged of issue....but I'm not asking about earth climate but in a greenhouse....does co2 help heat the greenhouse ? Is the a noticeable change if I was to have control with no co2 and one with co2 at nothing crazy say 800ppm. Would I get warmer Temps? Following some of climate science co2 should trap heat ? It should absorb and radiate back the heat....I know water is much better at this but if the greenhouse goes below zero humidity then isn't good....I'm trying to make a deep winter greenhouse and use as little if no external heat or light source. I've seen some wild stuff online...do you know anything a out the co2 kinda as a side....as I'll be adding it anyway at some point I think if it does use a lot of power. I'm off grid even tho I have electricity it's solar and it's limited running heaters is out of question of I've entertained attaching a greenhouse to south side of My house that way house heat sill help greenhouse. I've taken on the project of trying to build a deep winter greenhouse. Or an active style greenhouse. So what I'm going to do is. It's raised about 2 feet...and that's Insulted fairly well then outside there's tires and it's slightly dug out below that's raised Part...there's o2 barrier in floor heating pex pipe laid down and fhen that's filled back in. Then the greenhouse sits on top of this raised filled in platform. It's insulated all way around 2 feet roughly then everywhere except the front window which is thick 7mil or greenhouse plastic barrier. Inside and out. I wanted a double Payne window insulting effect not sure if that was wise let's lets light through I guess ? And the very tops.on the front sides basically the front south steep slope is the only only part. Altho I do have a bit on side open as well. I have 3 fans 1 up high. Two down low..I have co2 Meter temp and hudmit.with controllers so I can connect fans or misters or co2 machine up to thst when it's all done....things ad up tho. I have to justify the fans ! It's need airflow way to regulate the temp. Also there's water pump for solar heating system so the back wall is all black barrels filled with propylene glycol that heats up all day stores solar heat and cycles it through the in floor heating system as well. So your thoughts!

    Carbon dioxide is the same thing you breathe in and out in a bag when you're hyperventilating, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide ( carbon attached to one or two oxygen atoms) has a sedative effect on your body which makes it very dangerous because a large amount of it will cause you to fall into a deep deep sleep and don't wake up, Sleeping Beauty apples was full of carbon monoxide which has a sweet smell and taste ( the effects of carbon monoxide/mono-oxide, oxide means oxygen mixed with another compound/ mineral is quicker to kill you than carbon-Di = 2 oxide , carbon monoxide = carbon attached to one/mono oxygen atom, remember that humans breathe in and out two oxygen atoms so one oxygen atom mixed with Carbon/Blacksoot is more deadly for your body oxygen requirement of two oxygen atoms ), i swear we're walking organic robots with Atoms for batteries, burning oxygen for fuel breathing out black smoke/carbon like a car tailpipe after burning fuel ( there's a misconception about cars, they literally run on oxygen not gas, the fuel is just a liquid primer to ignite the 02 blowing through the engine combustion chamber, that's why cars can run on ethanol hydrogen methane etc etc gas and gases. Most people don't even know that calcium is a metal so our bones are actually made of a soft metal, we breathe out black smoke as carbon and we drink hydrogen everyday in some shape or form, usually mixed with sugar another flammable fuel substance and I don't have to remind you what nitrogen is 🤔) we are walking biodegradable robot trees/plants made of "everything around us" EVERYTHING !!! ✌❤
