  • In this episode we will modify the driver board to prevent it from burning off. The modification will be done accordantly to what ICOM is doing themselves on the newer driver boards which will be delivered out if you order a driver board by now.

    Icom service told me the same thing a few years ago when my 7000 went up in big ball of smoke. I ran it by the engineers in our club and they agreed that the radio most likely went into self destruction. It didn't blow the fuse and thankfully it wasn't mounted in the car as I was able to cut the power and throw the smoking radio outside. To say it let the magic smoke out was an understatement.

      +KD0LRG Yeah that is really a bad serious issue. Hope your radio is now working without problems! Thanks for comment 73

    Hi great video thank you for making and posting it. It would have been helpful for me at least to see how you soldered the resistor in place without effecting the mosfet?
    I presume you used solder paste on the mosfet pads and the hot air to flow the solder, did you do the same with the resister and then put a solder bridge in to replace the trace?

    A parasitic choke circuit might actually be the better design albeit a challenge in that cramped space. I also concur with cranking the power back a bit plus proper heat sinking as already shown. Great videos - thank you.

    • @TRXLab
      @TRXLab  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah cranking the power down will reduce the heat problem...73

    Is that resistor 1.50 Ohm 1% and connected to the gate? If so, I think this is called "bootstrap resistance". It reduces ringing caused by parasitic capacitance and inductance, which I think might be what is contributing to the runaway condition you mention which sends this circuit into self-destruction.

    • @TRXLab
      @TRXLab  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +k1mgy Hi, yes it is a 1,5Ohm resistor. Don't know how it is called, but think we are talking about the same. 73's

    I realize this is a 7-year-old video, but thought I'd ask a question anyway. Did ICOM ever produce any of the IC-7000 radios with the redesigned driver boards? If so, does anybody know the start serial numbers of radios that were upgraded?

    • @TRXLab

      yes ICOM implemented this mod, but I don't have the starting on mind

    The modification doesn't resolve the issue. There has been several iterations and addendum on the service manual and none have worked. The latest modification doesn't work as we have had several units burn. We had a case with one customer that had 3 units burn the driver within a very short period. Icom replaced his units under warranty and they still burnt the drivers. We visited his premises and found a few issues with his setup. I recommended some simple changes and now he has absolutely no issue anymore and his 7000's have not burn the drivers again. This was approximately 3 years ago.

      Hi Shane, what is the last working solution for this problem? Thanks for stopping by 73

    • @shanemitchell5807
      @shanemitchell5807 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tx Bench. The latest mod for the driver burn from Japan is 1. replace grounding fingers with one piece PCB grounding plate. 2. change gain resistor and cap on DSP board. 3 Readjust Tx gain in adjustment mode. This was in the form of a TSB from engineering Japan head office. This last modification still didn't work and this is typical of Icom Japan when it comes to complex problems. They have no clue.
