    An EXTREMELY VALUABLE video, thank you Saskia! I wish this video had existed a year ago. The instructions on the SARx and Critical Care really aren't clear on the consistency. I found out too late after watching a Skinnypigs1 video, that I had made the consistency too watery. Anyway unfortunately my piggie Xavier passed away. ❤❤❤ If I'd known more at that time perhaps he might have lived. Also its very difficult to syringe feed 6+ times a day if you're working full-time and have no one to help you do the feedings. (Also thank you to Skinnypigs1!)

I’ve been arguing with my husband on how much to give..thank you! I just bought some Sherwood too.. and your go to option if you have no critical care..brilliant! I have the Oxbow Critical Care, Someone mentioned on 1 of the Guinea Pig FB Pages, that after you have opened the pack, put it in the freezer to extend the life of it. It doesn't freeze the contents and I use hot not boiling water to make the mixture and let it get to room temperature before giving to my sick piggy. If he decided he didn't want it (99% of the time, he was still eating, but had lost weight, he was 3y.o at time of passing 22/1/2019). I would mix his favourite Mandarine Juice in it.

    • @amandah2866
      @amandah2866 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I added a bit of pureed apple to my batches of Critical Care when I was feeding my sick pig before she passed away. She seemed to like it better with the apple added and it was easy to puree in the blender with a bit of water. I'm so sorry for your loss.

      Thankyou, Trig just didn't have the immune system his surviving brother Roadie does. To give Trig extra Vitamin C, I juiced Mandarins and gave him the juice through a 1ml syringe. Trig would play Tug of War with me for the syringe. He LOVED his Mandarine juice, he wouldn't eat a piece of Mandarine, but the juice in a syringe? Even when Trig was at his healthiest-he eventually developed scarring on his Lungs from being sick all the time, if I said 'Do you want some Mandarine Juice?' That boy would go nuts!! Dancing around, climbing the side of his pen.

    Thanks for posting this! I wish this video came out about a week earlier, feb 14th, when I had first gotten my syringes and sherwood supplement (I love that brand's regular food ingredients). When I first got my supplies, I felt so clueless on how to feed my care supplement, but I couldn't find much detailed info anywhere of how to make it, mix it, and feed it.
    The only thing I would add, is when you cut the tip off of the curved syringe, is that if a cut does leave it sharp, a good way to fix sharp edges is with a filing tool, available wherever workshop or hardware tools are sold.
    Anyways, thanks again for the video, the timing of this video was just a week off, but I"m so happy you made it now!

    For a brief period of time I had to prepare one of my girls "special noms". I found a coffee grinder, clean of course, invaluable for grinding up and mixing the dry ingredients. I think that would work great for making your own critical care. At first I tried to feed her from a syringe but she was eating so greedily that I started making it a bit thicker and she would gobble it up. But she wasn't technically on critical care just getting her gut back in working order. Anyway, I think for those who want to make their own, a coffee grinder is the way to go.

    GMOs have actually never been proven to be harmful. It just means genetically modified product - which means just that, the modified the genetic structure. It doesn't mean pesticides or anything yucky are involved. The few approved GMO crops have been tested again and again, and there has been no proof that they are harmful. Just a little nitpick, I love your videos and what you do!!

    In the UK there's a version called Burgess Excel Dualcare recovery food which is way cheaper than Oxbow since it's not imported. It's currently £16.99 for 600g but Oxbow is £22 for 141g! I have a pig that has tooth issues that absolutely loves it, it comes in dissolvable mini pellets so you also have the option of feeding it dry.

    • @paradisefoundasmr
      @paradisefoundasmr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The reason it’s heartbreaking for me is because I lost a pig even though I kept up with the feedings. He went into stasis before the Vet even told me about Critical Care. Even then, they didn’t think to have me just bring him in and leave him..I can’t help but think if they were more proactive, my boy might still be here..better yet, if I had been more educated back then and took the initiative, maybe he’d still be thriving with his brothers. 😥 I can’t help but feel guilty even though I poured in thousands of dollars just to have my Vet kill him 😔

    This is a good video, the product for the liquid is handy to use to make it eassier that the Guinea Pig allows the siringe feeding. It is true that if they don’t start eating themselves a dental treathment is often a solution.
    We took our Guinea Pig to an Vetinary Hospital and they work together with a critter vetinary. They took her in hospital and first looked with a mini camera while she was awake and new right away if she needed to sleep during the dental treathment or could stay awake. They did a greath job on her. They work together with Chiropractor’s for animals. We could take her home and she slowly restart eating pellets and fresh grass and soft veggies. She allowed us to siringe feed her but after the visit to the Chiropractor she wanted to eat her self.
    It was a nice Vetinary who is specialised in critters but also helps other pets.
    Thank you for showing how you go abouth this. Also your video on how to inspect the teeth is very handy. I also watched skinny pigs video abouth bloath.

    Saskia, this video was very informative. Let me tell you a little bit about my experience. Here in Mexico we don't have access to any of those support feeding brands. Last year finally somebody brought one, it's by Emeraid System, have you heard of them? Well, the thing is I have a piggie that started with dental issues in October, I've been syringe feeding him since December and you're absolutely right when you say they can't put weight up, but we're still trying because he's very active. I hope you can look up to see if Emeraid IC herbivore is good enough, or if you recommend that I put something else to give him a better quality nutrition. By the way, he takes vitamin c daily. Thank you

    • @reneed5864
      @reneed5864 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Susan Roberts the emeraid herbivore that I’ve seen has dairy products in it which isn’t a part of the GP diet. While I’ve had it be very palatable for a sick guinea pig, it does not contain the coarse fiber that the oxbow critical care does. The recovery food is helping replace the necessary fiber that GPs need for their GI tract. Using a Timothy-based pellet in a homemade mash would probably be better than the emerald herbivore, unless they’ve changed their formula in the last 2 yrs.

      @susanroberts5354 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Ekane98
      @Ekane98 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The one you may want is not the Emerald IC (which is just cellulose and soy as principal ingredients) and probably good for rehydration and gut motility, but the Emerald Sustain which is from timothy hay is the actual equivalent to Critical Care. Hope you can get it. emeraid.com/emeraid-herbivore-sustain/

  • @Ekane98

    Saskia, I understand what you are saying about fillers, but what you said at the end was the most important: if you have a pig who has stopped eating hay and pellets or has stopped pooping, it is an emergency and so the brand doesn't matter. I keep a bag of either Critical Care or Sherwood in the freezer for emergencies.Our local rescue (much smaller) is sending every adoptive family home with an emergency kit: bag of food, syringes and baby simethicone gas drops. My vet suggested at least 45-60 mls a day. If your rubber syringe tip gets dry, spray it with Pam cooking spray so you can control the flow. Pigs who need additional nutritional support regularly (maybe while tooth issues are resolving) often learn to just eat it off a spoon.

    Hi! I am a veterinary assistant at my local vets and yesterday I re homed a 3 week old baby boy Abyssinian g pig who I’ve named Stevie because he was born without eyes. He was due to be put to sleep if nobody wanted him because the other babies bullied him and wouldn’t let him eat or drink and the owner didn’t want him so i re homed him. He’s fine medical wise he just was born without eyes. I was just wondering as I’ve been following you for a while if you have any suggestions on how to get him used to drinking as he struggles to find the water at the moment. He eats fine though. Just thought I’d ask you:) thanks x

    I used to have a guinea pig (sadly past away about a year ago) I syring fed a day or two when she stopped eating and was then back on track again. The vet couldn't find out what was wrong with her. This happened about five times in the last 2,5 years of her life (she was nearly 8 when she died). I used her pellets mixed with a bit of water, because she stopped eating the moment I didn't had anything else on hand, and went to the vet as soon as possible. But again, no cause was found and within a day of syring feeding she started eating on her own again.
    It's still a bit of a mystery to me why she stopped eating for a short periode of time, because there wasn't any fysical cause.. Now I'm wondering: can an older guinea pig suffer from mental issues like dementia? And can that be a cause of not eating, simply forgetting to eat?
    And thank you for this video! This home made mixture with the pellets sounds very tasty, even to me ;)

    • @Ekane98
      @Ekane98 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As an older pig, they can suffer from a mild case of bloat and then they don't eat. You might want to add baby simethicone gas drops to your emergency kit. Still, she was with you for 8 years which is wonderful. I am sure you miss her!

    Okay, but what if they won't swallow, and it's the weekend? My pig got really sick Friday night and we've had multiple attempts of trying to syringe feed...It's now Sunday afternoon, and I really don't know if she'll make it to Monday, but all the vets are closed the whole weekend. Suprisingly, she hasn't gotten any worse since Friday, but from what I've researched, guinea pigs can't go that long without food. She's already lived longer than she probably should have with no food or water. Or at least much water...

    My real name is Layla and when you said that guinea pigs name is the same as my name I started laughing. She is so cute and she has the same colors as my guinea pig and my guinea pigs name is Penelope aka Poppy.

    Is it bad to use the “critical care” that has alfalfa when caring for a pig with a bladder stone?

    Hi! Any advice on feeding a Guinea pig who doesn’t want to eat? My guinea pig the poor thing he’s come to that age where it’s almost his time to go and he’s getting to the point he doesn’t want to eat any more, I’ve been able to syringe feed him vitamin water but he’s not interested in food. Just tryna keep him full before it’s his time. Any advice will do

    What I want to say is just that people need to make sure that the guinea pig can breathe and chew! Don't take them in a choking headlock. Piggies breathe really fast and it might seem like a short time to you that you hold them in a way they can't breathe properly, but for the piggies it can be so long that they pass out. I feel strongly about this cause when I was a kid the guinea pig of my cousin almost died like this and it was shocking to see.

    I didn't know that any other brands made a hand feeding formula for guinea pigs. Critical Care is all I can find in Australia. My vet says to maintain the weight of a 1kg guinea pig they need 35ml-40ml of Critical Care a day if they're not eating at all. Even with the soy filler Critical Care saved the life of two of my piggies when they got very sick, without it they would have died. But my God it's messy! I have tea towels which are designated Critical Care towels because of how it gets everywhere. I often joke that the healthy pigs would eat me because I get covered in it lol.

      Hi fellow Aussie, you can get the other brands through eBay or maybe Amazon if they ship to Aus.

      I make mine drier and actually spoon it into the top of the syringe. Less messy and more food.

    Please please comment on my post! I am in dire need of help! My guinea pig (2 years old) needs critical care bc she’s having digestive issues and syringe feeding her has me past my wits end. She absolutely hates critical care. I just spent over 2 hours trying to syringe feed her. I had my mom and sister try to help me but it was a disaster. I tried swaddling her in a towel, a blanket, I tried grabbing her face and forcing it in her mouth, I even tried sitting her on my lap and bed but NOTHING WORKED! It took much too long but I was able to wrestle in 3 syringe feedings and put her back in her pen. She was thrashing, squirming, biting, burrowing, and she even almost darted out of my arms a few times. Tonight was so stressful it nearly brought me to tears. She’s so rowdy I don’t know what to do. My exotic vet is about 30 mins away from me and I need to give her critical care on top of 3 other medications multiple times throughout the day, so I can’t just go to the vet and make them do it (plus they’ll charge me each time prob). Please someone give me tips on what to do because she’s so unbelievably difficult but needs her medication! She hasn’t been eating and if she doesn’t get this in her it won’t be good :-( :-( :-(

    in my view holding it such a way is unnecessary and too stressful. Just give syringe directly. Put guinea pig on a absorbent pad or paper towel. No constrains are needed. if she like puree inside syringe she will take it without any force. some even take it directly inside the cage. if they refuse simply hold its head and gently push 0.5 ml-1 ml of food inside mouth.
