    @1:10 the connection.... thats a joke isn't it?!? I am a student in electrical engineering and this idea hurts me in my head!
    Guys thats VERY bad testing! your goal with the Caps is to minimize Tre Resistance, right, but you defeat the whole point when you adding this piss-poor wires to the board! The ceramic caps are way better than LOW-ESR Elkos, thats simply a fact and can be proven by the data sheets.
    You introduced a load of inductance (Complex resistance/ Impendance) and resistance which renders this test to complete bullshit!
    I dont get why most people in the comments are believe in this. Go check out EEVBlog on decoupling caps, we do kind of exactly the same here. you dont want huge capacity, 100µF is more than enough when installed right and use right caps.

  • @Siamect
    @Siamect 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I think you need to shorten the cables to the caps/anti board. If you look at any pcb, the decoupling cap is very close to the IC is is intended for. Would be nice to make a side by side test with the same setup but with short and long cables and see if there is any significant diff.

      Yes too long and tiny cables I agree. Love the tests any way :)

      Yes, long cables catch anything like an antenna, and with so much close interference, there should be some difference for good with very short cables. -oh, 4 years later.. :/

    This is good stuff. Great information. Thanks. On the shootout what I would love to see is LowESR cap VS LowESR cap + LC Filter. Also a comparison between 470uF vs 1000uF on the battery leads.

    Please do testing with same low ESR capacitor soldered directly on battery pads vs same capacitor soldered with +/- 3cm long 20AWG wires.

  • @charleswarwick4849

    Makes sense to me that one big fat cap is better than multiple small ones. Solid testing.

    • @KrotowX
      @KrotowX 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not exactly. The total capacitor bank capacity and connection quality (not too large wire length and not too thin wires, soldering quality etc.) matter more. But the capacitor alone not always is the savior. Especially if main noise source in video and gyro is bad 5V BEC on flight controller board.Then you may need to add low ESR capacitor on 5V rail or even castrate 5V BEC chip out of FC and use external 5V BEC instead. Also mind the distance from naked VTX board circuit side from video circuitry. VTX if is located too near from FC video circuitry, may noise your eyes out.

    You may also find cleaning up your wiring has an even greater effect. Some of the transients you are measuring there are from radiated emissions, as opposed to conducted. You may be surprised how much visible video noise is from radiated emissions, and how much clean, proper wiring helps. I understand you are shooting for worst case, but more often than not, clean, proper wire routing and proper grounding will completely eliminate the need for additional capacitance. I do agree with the Flycolor Raptors being great ESC's. Use twisted pairs with ground for all your small signal wires (ESC signal, video), and ensure you do not create ground loops.

    Capacitor should be soldered as close to the circuit as possible, otherwise it's useless. The power cables should be as short as possible. These two long, thin wires works like inductors.

    It is absolutely pointless to hook up a capacitor or a capacitor array with such long and thin wires....
    Solder 1-2 ceramic caps in 1 to 10μF range on the vtx pcb power pins, on the sbec output pins and on the camera power pins if needed.
    Not dangling on wires.

    May I suggest a test? Lots of people are putting caps at the XT60 instead of at the ESC because it’s easier to fit in tight builds. Could you see how much less effective the cap is when located at the XT60? What if the capacitance is doubled?

    I am sorry for the newbie question :) Can I use this parallel capacitor plate on any power board? Where did you solder it exactly? I have video noise like black stripes only when I use the throttle. The more I give gas the more they show up , its very annoying! Thank you!

  • @chemistt
    @chemistt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey DroneMesh. My friend is placing a diode with the capacitor to remove the negative effect of CAP discharging. ALSO! One thing that came to my mind is placing capacitor on BEC 5V line to camera, even after the main CAP on VBAT. Would it make sense or any difference, what do you think?

    • @ruftime
      @ruftime 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Diatone has added a cap to the camera bec to address video noise and appears to have fixed their problem, and flying friends have found it works sometimes with video problems. Just depends on where your noise is coming from. Can’t hurt to try:-)
      Happy flying!

    • @DKFPV
      @DKFPV 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chemistt adding a diode to a capacitor would make this capacitor totally useless, the capacitor is smoothing the voltage by constantly charging on a voltage spike and discharging on a voltage drop

    • @chemistt
      @chemistt 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Danila Kilin, sadly I have no knowledge on what diode does and feel overwhlemed by all the other stuff right now so I am totally fine with knowing that CAP is the best option for recovering from nosiy setup. Althought your argument makes sense, I remember him mentioning that he added diode to CAP, to either stop cap discharging into the PDB or not to discharge into ESC. Thats all I can tell. I never tried that nor I want to try it.

    So I see a major problem with this capacitor test. The greater the distance from the source of the noise ( the ESCs ) and the capacitor / filter the less effect it will have.
    I have experienced this effect first hand with my own setup:
    TBS Unify Pro Race
    Emax 2306 2400kv with 4 individual Bullet 30's (literally the noisiest setup ever, I know😅)
    I had horrific lines in my FPV feed and an osd that dissapeared under slight throttle fluctuations.
    At the time, I was using I was using a first gen DYS F4 PRO, and I put 4 individual low esr caps on each of the + and - ESC pads on the FC side. This literally changed nothing, and I still had the same horrific video noise.
    I talked with some people in my local MultiGP chapter and they told me I needed to move the caps to as close to the ESCs as possible and keep the capacitor's leads as short as possible as well.
    I took their advice, and literally placed the same 4 individual caps directly onto each of the + and - pads of each ESC.
    All noise immidiatley vanished and my OSD was crystal clear and constant.🖒
    I later asked why it made such a night and day difference, and I was told that the noise caused by our ESCs is like a small snowball rolling down a hill quickly becoming a massive one. The sooner you can stop it (filter the noise), the better.
    In my case, by the time the noise had hit my caps when I had them on the the FC side, the noise had already been growing from "rolling down the hill" long enough for the caps to be completely ineffective.
    But when I moved the caps to right on the source, it worked perfectly.

    • @amarifpv
      @amarifpv 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is also why I find caps that are placed on the battery leads for non 4in1 ESCs a joke.

    • @AndyDreadFPV
      @AndyDreadFPV 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amari FPV maybe Drone Mesh could do a test on the difference between mounting locations for ESCs. Could be that the further away from the source the bigger the cap required.

    Love your channel, drone science for the win! I'm going to do my first build with a Helio spring, so I'm going to be using a Matek fchub as pdb. Curious if anyone has used caps on the vbat pads that feed the FC? Just thinking that would keep the noise out of the gyro, and I would run the vtx and cam off the FC bec.
