It is not about changing the direction of magnetic field nor magnetic field leaks.
When ever we brake a peace of magnet we tend to found 2 pole which we named as N&S. In same way. After placing a yoke which is magnetized with the help of current. Its tend to make the specimen as a temporary magnetized element by that when there is any crack in the specimen each crack consists to have N&S pose those N&S poles generate mini magnitic field by which the ferros particles get attract and identify the defect.
