Shirl doesn't get enough respect as one of the great frontmen this country has produced. Always mixed charismatic performance with large doses of humour :D
They were bloody brilliant! The 'novelty' value of their persona will always be remembered but they were damn good musicians, all of them, and their lyrics were often quite insightful- 'Living in the 70s' and 'Horror Movie' for instance. I miss Shirl- gone too soon x.
‘Love on the Radio’ and ‘Carlton’ are both fine pieces of musicianship. The novelty value and dirty lyrics got us in, but we’ve stayed for the music all these five decades. Five decades. Fuck.
Aaahhh ..... those wild, wild days. I remember seeing Skyhooks at the Bondi Life Saver all those years ago, they were so good that I actually did remember seeing them ;)
Such memories...Skyhooks - yeah! Benefits of being tall and looking older than I looked allowing me to sneak into a pub underage. Blue eyeshadow. Treads. Fluffy ducks. Kaluha and milk. Vodka and OJ. Malibu and Coke.... Great laughs and fun times. But now I understand the lyrics to some of the songs... Oh dear! Lol!
First time I saw Skyhooks they were the backup band for Matt Taylor's release of his Brisbane To Beechworth album at the Wangaratta Town Hall. We were all pretty stoned and we were suddenly met with the full force of the original Skyhooks from before they had to 'tone it down a bit' for the mainstream. I still remember the about 10 minute drum solo that still echoes in my head.
One of the main bass guitarist's 'big goose' (Barry Sullivan from Matt Taylor's CHAIN lived here in Caloundra,Sunshine coast Qld,they where also great as pub rock,I'm friends with his son who is a drummer & also teaches drums...
Great Aussie Song for a Great Aussie Day Like 2Day 26th January 2010 Cheers Red Greg Bongo Freddie and the Voice Shirl is RIP, Kickass today Boys... Long Live Skyhooks xx 2J..
I went to one of these first reunion shows, in Melbourne at Festival Hall, this looks like it might be from those shows. OMG I was so excited because I was too young to see them at pubs etc when they first appeared but I was just besotted with them. I still love them! But now, as an older person and professional musician I get to rewatch, re-admire and understand better the amazing musicianship of each member of this quintet that was summed into the brilliant music (and theatre of this band). Another bonus of being older and a musician is that I can have my own private and personal experience and greater appreciation through learning how to play Skyhooks songs. Here is my acoustic version of the Skyhooks song, Carlton. I hope you enjoy it! @0aEA

Skyhooks. The cover of a Juke magazine had Kiss on the cover and the headline read- Kiss America,s Skyhooks? For once we thought we were better than the imports! Great band that wrote the soundtrack to Australian Culture!

What a shame they released shit like, 'All My Friends are Getting Married', and it's what a lot of people remember Skyhooks for, not great songs like this. Living in the 70s was their best album.

Damn if the Skyhooks didn’t have rhythm. Just listen to the guitars behind Shirl on all of their tracks. There’s pure Rock n’ Roll genius here.
