Clint "that's not supposed to happen" Stevens, what's the point of speed running a game if you are absolutely god awful at it. The biggest problem for most speed runners is finding a game with enough content that they can complete it without having to take shortcuts. As game speed runners like to say, a game is incomplete if there's only one mission.
Before games like Halo and Kingdom Hearts would allow the player to read the game's novel and then have a method of completing each mission with no dialogue or backstory beyond the first mission. However, the games created a market for the illusion of speed. Complexity of gameplay and repetitive level design is generally believed to boost speeds. More complex gaming elements translate to longer play sessions that yield more time for both the game and the player. Players need a reason to play a complex game without having to think about the consequences. A computer simulation can be complex with hundreds or even thousands of rules, but there is a greater potential for mistakes and false assumptions due to the fact that the players don't actually have to interpret
