    In Kansas, they dropped car inspections (upon change of ownership) in the late 1980s. Now, during harvest, a common sight is heavily-laden wheat trucks sporting both bent axles and ANTIQUE license tags due to their age. 'Murica.
    Ironically, the last car I had inspected was a 1964 MGB. The gas station guy vaguely looked over the item in front of him to confirm it was indeed a car, and then zipped a pen line vertically down every check box on the form under the Passed column. They dropped inspections the year after.

    Excellent episode! Yes, there’s certainly an added element when owning and driving older machinery. I see it as something of a mutual dependence, where enjoying the car requires some TLC in return, and fortunately I quite enjoy digging through old machinery and putting things right again. My ‘78 MG Midget (US-spec) needs to have its front suspension swivel pins looked at, and the last time I had it out in the rain the wipers pointed straight up and then ceased to move. But hey, a bit of tinkering and all will be well again. Fortunately rust isn’t an issue on my car, for which I’m very grateful. Best regards and Happy New Year from Missouri!

    I'm amazed at how in depth the MOT is over there. The annual safety inspection in Texas involves driving the car around the parking lot and honking the horn. Even then only some counties require emissions testing.

    • @furiousdriving
      @furiousdriving  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im always amazed when I see some American TH-camrs able to pull a wreck out of a barn or build something and just drive off in it, while Id love that freedom the thought of other people doing is kind of frightening!
      That said our test is very tough and can keep decent cars off the road on technicalities so with older cars you need to find a sensible MOT station

  • @mrbenn747
    @mrbenn747 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Completely take your point on the MOT exemption. A check over by a suitable mechanic is a good idea if an owner isn’t able to check a car over sufficiently. I believe MOT exemption is not the terrible idea many seem to think. I have a Morris Minor and have had issues on the last three MOT tests I’ve taken it for. As an example, on the most recent test the (young) tester didn’t know how to start the car to get it off the ramp. He came and got me from the waiting room to start the engine and drive it off the ramp as he didn’t know how. I’m not kidding. I’d suggest the modern MOT with younger testers coming in that have not seen such cars simply don’t understand how they work and how they were built. Not a criticism, just an observation.

    • @furiousdriving
      @furiousdriving  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I cut a sentence saying you should find a friendly tester, as it sounded like I meant a dodgy one, but meant with an old car its important to find an MOT station that understands old cars - Ive had the question "does this have indicators?" on a P6 of all things!

    • @mrbenn747
      @mrbenn747 4 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @VeyronBD
    @VeyronBD 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I kind of agree about the MOT thing, but I think the idea is most people with cars that age are looking after them at least pretty well and I'd say that most people wouldn't let it get so bad to endanger themselves. Plus some places like the USA which often have no inspection at all on any cars don't seem to be too badly impacted by it.

    Your car quota makes me feel better about my little fleet.. I'm sure you've explained it before, but when it comes to running costs... I know you tax/sorn certain cars on a monthly as-needed basis (I'm experimenting with doing the same for my 4 overwinter) but what's your way of dealing with insurance costs... Multicar? Classic policies? Or just many individual policies?

    As a Swede I'm plenty used to the MOT, or besiktning as it's called here. Mandatory on all cars under 50 years of age, and those over 50 that hasn't been motted since 20th May 2016. I guess they assume that cars over 50 are both uncommon enough and mostly used as enthusiast vehicles. With an average car age of 9.9 y then sure. Our cars become tax free when they become 30, so my 1990 Volvo 740 is finally free!

      You have to get ALL of the old Fiat crusty porous factory underseal off the sill and seam areas with a wire-brush angle grinder and a scraper with a hot air gun... same for all mid-size Fiats / Alfas of that era based on the Tipo.

    Unfortunately I can't say I have much faith in the MOT I've seen lots and lots of cars passing with tyres in shocking condition and I've cars failing for stuff like a non existent reverse light so I do take the MOT with a pinch of salt

      Your driving style is atrocious you have no control of the car driving with just one loose hand on the wheel and looking at the camera , you need 100% concentration these days. Unfortunately you have it all documented on video too 🙄 I'm surprised the Alfa's are still rusting so aggressively. I worked on Alfa's in the late 80's and the 33's were rusty on the PDI,as they were already 18 months old having been stored in a field somewhere in Italy. Much like Dacia's about 5 years ago which had rust problems on new cars, just get a 20 year old Volvo and enjoy motoring without any of the rubbish problems you are getting !

      so did I....the only one where I paid proper money for a top condition car, rather than a cheap project. The Rover was a £100 project and the Mini a scruffy fixer upper that could have been broken for parts but both are solid, the Rover did 300 miles today and the Mini looks like a show car!
