Our Experimental eco-friendly antifouling project begins- Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 205

- Ever wondered how to paint the bottom of a sailboat with antifouling?? After 5 weeks of back breaking work we’re on the home stretch. We start off by sandblasting Delos’s bottom to take her back to the gel coat. After applying 3 coats of epoxy primer it’s time to spray on our new silicon based experimental antifouling paint- SeaSpeed VX 10. It takes about 2 gallons of paint and an airless sprayer to get the job done. After adding a new anchor, end for ending our chain, installing our new convection oven, repairing our leaky rudder, and many many more projects Delos is ready to get back in the water for the new season!
Subscribe to our Sailing Videos, we have 5 seasons worth!

I can still recall the musky aroma of a sweaty hazmat suit at the end of a day at the yard. Good times :)
Kiril Dobrev a good man to go hell with all the work. I hope you got to play on board for a little while!
Kiril Dobrev ..... it was great to see you again Kiril. Hopefully you get more time on vids next visit.
Always enjoy seeing you on Delos. Hopefully you will be able to join the crew for some future sailing. We all know you are a hard worker and talented editor and photographer with a magnetic personality.
You sir, rock! They seriously need to take you around a while as payment a bit! Great to see you doing well!
Давай Кирюша молодец!
Hi my name is Ray and I am a native America. Five yrs ago I had a stroke and now i can't walk or care for my self. I lived in Santa Cruz.CA . Now I live in the San Fernando valley in a convalescent home. I watched all of your videos and I need to say thank you. When i watch all , I forgot that I can't walk. I love the ocean and I miss it. Again thank you for helping me to forget . God bless and Brian marry the girl , she is right for you.
Thanks Ray Elizalde
Best videos are the maintenance ones. Worst videos are the personal drama. This was one of the best.
One of your most informative videos. Great job: interesting, educational ... and the usual Delos crew good attitude! So I bet Delos picks up at least 1 knot of average speed trough the water! Hope you keep us all informed as to how well the bottom paint does. Nice touch with the UW Logo too. Fair winds and slippery sailing!
Astoundingly good video for not being on the water sailing. Found myself rapt by the whole process. Great editing by all three editors. You can feel Leesir's touch though. And Blue at 29:00 is her usual warmly lyrical observer of Nature's wonders. Thrilled to see you back on the water. Nice to see so much labor pay off. Delos looked absolutely stunning.
19:12 🤣 I found it quite funny that I’ve been watching and listening to your instructions so closely as if I’m ever going to have to do any boat repairs. Lol
The good thing is that a lot of the techniques you’ve shown could be used for other things. Knowledge is always a great tool to have!
The fact is that this series is all about Brians heart.
I REALLY like how you mix up your WORK, SAILING, ADVENTURE, EXPLORATION, TECH, ROMANCE, PEOPLE, PARTYING and Other stuff you show in your videos. It's all Good stuff Bro and Broettes LOL
I don't know if I could have the patience to live on a boat for as long as you guys do even with all the great things you experience. I think I could do it for awhile but I think maybe it could be something that once you do it, it gets in your blood and then you can't live without it. Following you gives us the feeling of being there, wanting to be there, while doing our day by day land lubber lives.
Take care crew and THNX MUCH.
PS I have seen you and Delos evolve over a long time and wonder if you could do a compulation of ALL the additions and improvements including drones, lines, electronics, mechanical Passport tips and learned methods both ship and also living with crew members over time.
How cool is Kyril to show up and help paint the boat! Talk about a ton of work. Man that guy is a true friend!
I could sit for hours and watch Brian fix things...loved the rudder work...Delos Crew once again can make any video , even the most basic routine work entertaining and educational ...thanks guys, can't wait till you're back on water !
he is an inspiration
With the Government shutdown, a lot of shitty news local and national, and other things that I rely on... it is a huge relief that your videos are rolling out again. Thanks guys for some great content. It means more than you know!
100-pound Mantus? That makes sense. We went with an over-weight 65 pound Mantus for our boat. Ours being a 41 footer that weighs 15 tons, it makes sense with the Mantus that you guys went with. They are great anchors! We also relied on an old really heavy CQR, but it would drag at those times when it should not have. You know, like at 2 in the morning? Yea, that's the time. The Mantus has held through gale force winds of a Beaufort 7 scale - winds of around 40 knots and we were whipping around and hitting hard on the bowsprit. They are heavy, but they REALLY are worth it!
Crazy how much different Delos looks with the grey bottom. Looks like a whole new boat.
Hi Lisa! Good to see you’re still in the family.
This is my favorite part watching all the repairs. I work for Cummins diesels engines for 38 years and the parts and part of it so I know when you take things apart you need to have everything all the seals gaskets bolts nuts whatever put that thing back together again. When you’re out on the road making repairs there’s no parts store nearby so you have to make sure you get everything they need for the repair and that was my specialty. MG
Am I the only one missing Ramukanji at the start? Great video as usual with lots of details. Thanks guys and best from HKG
Dang Kazza, you are one beautiful and inspired young lady! The entire Delos group always amaze and make me wish I was 30 years younger and living a life such as y'all! The repairs look great, much hard work from all and of course very expensive. Thank you for sharing your lives and adventures!
Getting a little deeper into this video and Brian you are truly a master mechanic with much knowledge on how to make repairs properly. Great job on the rudder repair and am sure you will have many years of issue free sailing!
I just quit my high brow, stuffy, corporate job. My heart is the sea, what I would give to sail with y'all. if y'all ever go north to the Georgia Coast, I have a place there and would love to have y'all!
if y'all are ever heading past St. Simon's Island south of Savannah please holler!
(not to thread jack, but.... my wife and I were in Jekyll a few months ago and took a side trip to your neck of the woods to start looking at sailboats - beautiful part of the South down there)
It's such a great boat. The way you do the work (and what you pay people to do instead) is exactly what I would do too. It makes it kind of relaxing to watch. 😄
It's great to see the process of keeping Miss Delos clean and pretty! Being a bit on the old side you could say she's had a face lift! lol It will be particularly interesting to see how well the new bottom coating works. Thanks for the details.
Scott
Wow guys! That new bottom paint scheme makes Delos look so elegant now! And I bet she slips through the water so effortlessly now. You folks did an awesome job and looking forward to the next episode of sailing.
I know you all get along well but it seems to me that doing all this work together must be a bonding event between you. So nice to have a clean bottom. I love your boat. Thanks for the long video. Everything else comes to a complete stop when a Delos video shows up. Very interesting bottom paint. An 8 year clean hull would be a real blessing.
I do look forward to my Friday Delos video's as well!!!
There's just no substitute for a clean bottom
A boat load of good people with an abundance of good character. You have the tenacity for trying new products and processes to advance the use of environmentally friendly systems. I especially like videos like this one. God Bless you all with FW&FS. Be safe and be well.
Good catch up video. Like Blue’s good morning at 29:00, the voice. The voice.
yup she has a great voice for ASMR videos!
a step by step procedure of sorts to let your viewers know in how to do it by yourself is i think the most important part of this vlog.It is interesting and keep our eyes stayed on the youtube screen for the next steps u will perform. It is never boring at all....You guys and gals rock...
16:19 DEEPLY skeptical of the design on Maggie's tow bar. I think there is more force than you realize, OR way less than I realize! Granted, most of my experience is being yanked out of the water for a barefoot deep water start by a 250 horse Black Max on a ski boat. Maggie isn't packing a 250, but still would be more comforting to see wider flanges (2x) on the base of that bar or more support front to back on it. I don't know, It'll be a hell of a lot of fun for a while at least. :D
I was thinking the same thing.
@@133slowmaro Maggie is aluminum right? Hard to say if all that leverage will bend the steel tube or the aluminum square tubing first. My money is on stressing the aluminum square tubing.
Agreed. The leverage on that bar, being so high above the mountings, looks like it'd either bend the verticals or maybe even crack off the welds. It'd been stronger to have a tie off point on each side similar to their previous setup but just higher up about 12 inches. With the tall tow bar they may also have a hard time keep the bow of the diggy in the water.
@@beardy4831 Yes, a strap or rope from the top to something forward, even on the bow, would probably go a long way to stabilize it. Might make seating a little awkward, but keep things from bending.
does look a might bleak - i see failure on the horizon - i hope we are wrong
Extremely happy to see Brady back on Delos...❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏👏
WD-40 was never designed as a penetrant to loosen things. It is also a poor rust preventative. As the name implies, it was for Water Displacement (WD) in Redstone missile silos. Supposedly, the missiles were sticking to the sides of the silos. Kroil is the best penetrant made. A more common one is PB Blaster (although it might affect some seals). These two penetrants are dar superior to Liquid Wrench which is still better than WD-40. Something to consider for your next stuck object.
I could so clearly feel the relief you all experienced when you were back in your element on Delos in the ocean. I think you are like mermaids, if you are out of the water too long you might die 😊
Yup, you can automatically hit the thumbs up before watching a Delos video. They are always the best videos on all things sailing.
It's going to be interesting to see what the bottom is going to look like in a few weeks.
When are you going to sail through the Great Lakes?
Back in 1990 my friend and i bought a storm-damaged 32' Morgan from the auction in WPB. Over the summer we restored her and performed many of the same things you guys are doing. This brings back those memories so vividly . Love the channel and Happy Sailing
Look forward to the hull results. Thanks for the pricing. Glad your back
Thanks for showing how you guys take care of maintenance, there’s always things to learn. Your getting a little more Grey in your beard and hair Brian, it suits you. Thanks for all the work you all put into your videos, I don’t think you know how inspirational they can be for us land-locked people.
When you insert new gland packing for a rudder leak. Cut each end of each packing piece at 45 degrees and you have a guaranteed seal. Inserting the packing “end to end” still has the potential to still leave a gap when the gland nut is tightened.
@Sayit AsItIs yes u use 45 degre when u want to connect one end to another not on stacking layers of packing
Important....
Fantastic job Delos crew. Pick your future destination wisely. So far, so good. As for where I would like to see you go, is where ever yall want to go. But warm is better than cold, plus the more remote the better. I reckon I could of simply said: "Keep on keeping on".
Call me crazy but I love these haul out videos and seeing what love and care goes into keeping Delos safe and lovely. Must feel amazing to then get her back in the water.
That good feel moment, where every thing comers together.
Right. You can only watch jumping dolphins, sunsets, and bodies for so long. But the age old struggle with the loose and lost is always fascinating and uplifting when we meet the challenge.
What's up brothers. I'm going to be a regular patron as I'm learning how this works and with in a year May join you. Delos! I love you guys and your new crew member Sierra,I pray I spelled it right. For bless you all. SV.DELOS. ALWAYS
Yay!! Love watching Delos every Friday! :) ty
Delos is looking awesome loving the new Antifoul - gorgeous and so much better than the normal black! Strong winds and tight sails guys
Great video! I love these get'r done type videos!
Jullie zijn allemaal ongelooflijk fantastische inspirerende mensen. Ik denk dat ik bijna 100 afleveringen achter elkaar gezien heb.
Yasss!!!!! SV Delos is starting again!!!!🤘🤘🤘
You do very good work. I'm impressed with the quality of your work. I do not impress easily. If I found myself in parel and needed a crew to help me save myself, your crew is what I would wish for. No other team would make me fill as secure as rounding the Horn with people like you.
Love these types of videos!
When painting and having to tape off an area, apply the tape, then take a tube of Dap or Caulk and apply a bead of caulk at the edge of the tape on the side to be painted. Then use your finger to smear the caulk over the edge of the tape on the side to be painted, nice and smooth and then wait a few minutes, then paint. When you peel the tape off, you will have a perfectly clean line, because the caulk will fill in any tiny gaps between the tape and any flaws in the surface.
Love you guys so much. Smooth sailing. You are all an inspiration!
this is the ONLY channel where I click the LIKE BUTTON before I even watch the video
@C.P Company Same here !!!
I confess me too!
Me too! LOL
you and I both!! I can't get enough of these guys & gals!!! Great information and very entertaining all rolled up into one video!!! Keep them coming.
Stop clicking, buy them a beer.
Dang she is looking good, great effort and lots of hard work...I hope it's the best bottom paint ever!
You have much love for your Boat I respect that so much . In the trucking world. we call that pride in the ride
Funny to see 'Budget' and 'Marine' together!
Huge respect for all the work you were able to do by self...
You are going to like that Mantus anchor..it holds like a beast!!!
Boy !!!! Does that video bring back memories in Singapore, we scraped the bottom off barnacles and then we act them, so did the natives :-)
Eeep, the antifouling those barnacles were probably growing on is death juice. It's preposterously poisonous stuff, because it's sole job is to kill everything trying to grow on it.
Now 16 months later, hows the bottom coat performing?
All that work makes me really appreciate my fresh-water, trailerable boat! I was thinking that 5 months out of the water was a really long time, then I remembered how much my boat sits on its trailer in the yard and...only 5 months? Another great SVD video for the record!
Congrats on arriving back home and successfully completing some much needed maintenance!
I really enjoy that you include all this kind of content not just sun and fun , beer and babes lol thanks
Delos is the first two pictures on the SeaCoat gallery page. How cool is that?!
Jack Zeigler where? You? You have a link to that?
www.seacoat.com/projects-gallery/
This opening music makes me want to go back and watch the Max and Frida days. Musical association.
Kazza dance at 28:20 is funny! lolol
I watched that bit three times!
Hello good sir, do you mind telling me how you were able to comment on this video a week ago when this video says it was published yesterday???
@@Joseph-C I commented about four hours ago. I think you can see the time next to my name.
I love a good Kazza dance
@@Joseph-C, Well, you see, I'm able to travel through time. : - ) - - - Not really. If you become a patron of SV Delos then you get access to videos a week earlier than the general TH-cam viewer - even if you subscribe. You can give them $1 for one video (per month) as a patron (I think) and still get early access. Or you could give them $100 (or MORE) for every video they release in a month (~ $400+-). The more you give the greater the perks. Larger givers are more likely to be selected to become (short or longer term) crew members - or participate in patron events taking place on Delos for a day, weekend or . . . who knows (but you still have to pay your way to the boat's location). I can't afford to give a lot so I'm classified as a "Swabby" - as in "swab the deck". lol There are two higher levels that correspond with how much you're contributing dollar wise.
F.A.B.U.L.O.U.S. !!!!!!! Was wondering how this new bottom paint idea was going to play out and you covered the install really well. Now anxious for the results having added the electronics to the bottom anti-fouling concept !! F.A.B.U.L.O.U.S. !!!! 😊⛵️⚓️🍷🍺
Hej all you Sparetime-Painter's ! Pretty good job that y'all have done as "Non-Professionals", especially spraypainting Airless is not for beginners ! Brady's quick moves tell me that he knows what i'm talking about ;-) For the next paintjob two tipps from a Pro. @Kazza: you've made the right experiences with the taping. Get it off as fast as you can. Means: not immediately after painting (too risky) but don't leave it on over the night. Tape cut's better through soft paint then when it's cured out completely. Regarding the leftover glue: that's a question of Quality (and price, of course) of the tape. For the next time: don't buy it at a Marine-Shop, stop by where they work with it every day - an automotive repair shop. They have the right stuff. @Brady: on your next job with a roller PUT SOME PAINT ON THE SURFACE ! Thickness is all what counts, squeezing the roller out up to the point where it is completly dry creates a much too thin and - more important - uneven paintlayer. Happy traveling into the new season, i'm pretty exited where it will take you (and us). Best regards from Germany - any chances that you ever will visit Hamburg ? The "Hafengeburtstag" (Birthday of the Port) would be the perfect date. It's been celebrated only once a year and it is THE place and time to be in Hamburg. Please think about it . . .
Stefan, yes this is excellent advice! Thank you so much. Germany has been on my list of places to visit for quite some time. Would love to do an event there at some point :) . Brian
@@svdelos Let me know if your plans become a little bit more precise, i - and i'm sure a lot of other members of The Tribe - will arrange a damn good time for the crew and you here in Germany. You've announced the Duesseldorf Boat Show also because of your Sonihull . . . this would also be a perfect chance to meet your german fans. Please let me know if i can be a help to arrange something for you or the crew.
Stefan - they clarified they will not be able to go to Duesseldorf, they are only announcing the Sonihull exhibit. Anyway, I also am very thankful your detailed advice, especially the auto repair shop tip.
About the taping, not there with you. If you wait until dry you easily get slivers. When you carefully with a constant pull keeping the tape tight removing it immediately that gives the sharpest lines and smoothest lines. The paint rounds of the tape lines and of course no slivers and least change of pulling any paint of the under layer. It is not that hard. You also have different kind of tapes, like gold for very sharp lines or less sticky for vulnerable surfaces.
Rather than blue tape, Frog tape is designed to eliminate bleed thru problems because it forms a barrier between the paint and the edge of the tape to get a sharp line on removal. www.frogtape.com/
I'm looking to buy a sailing vessel and if you ever wanted to sell Delos, a boat like yours would serve me well. I love your boat and what you have done with it. It seems your every choice is the one I would of chosen. It is nice to see that people still know how to properly take care of a wonderful vessel like Delos.
How do you paint under the supports holding Delos in up? The video showed you painting around them. Guess you move them one at a time... oh, never mind. You showed us. Hehe
Haha I've been wondering this for a while some other videos I've watched they literally paint it whilst it's on the travel lift on the way in the water been thinking that can't be good 😂
I’m glad I’m not the only one wondering about this. Seems a bit of a juggling act. Well done everyone for your hard work, Delos is looking sweet! Really keen to hear about how the ultrasonic anti-foul system works. That sounds really cool !
the support does not hold any weight, so you can remove it one by one and paint
Im wondering how they painted the anti fouling paint under the supports since they started after the hurricane cradle was pulled out.
Really cool to show all the hard work the crew puts in the boat.
My husband was making breakfast one time when I came out to the kitchen he had a fork attached to his electric drill... He couldn't find the mixer 😉
Canada appreciates your use of metric measure. Well done crew.
It is a French vessel, so they are used to thinking in terms of what the instruments actually show.
@@wallykramer7566 for sure. I was also thinking about how Bryan and Brady were american and started off using imperial in some of the early vids.
If you guys ever need anything made out of aluminum, I can make it for you and just send it over. Not far from the Caribbean in FL.
Well the normal high jinks is fun these Fix-It videos are truly excellent. Delos will never be rotten to the gunnels the way you're on top of things.
I would also say that you don't have a chance of having any bilge rats because you're hull seems to be tight and top-notch.
An observation: Karin's eyes are expressive as well as kind.
Fair Winds and following Seas my friends!
I just love it , the whole re-build so to speak , Delos's bum never looked so fine ( hahahah ) cant wait for the next installment.
At 28:18 LOVE the Kazzatron "Happy Dance!" Yay! So happy and excited for Delos!
Hey! Is this the only Delos video which does *not* have Ramukanji? (Are you allowed to do that?)
Thats what was missing ! :-)
exactly what i was gonna ask. ive been watching delos since 2013 and although some of the music they used to play in the early videos was pretty cool, once they introduced rumukaji i started associating delos with the song. its like your favorite hangout no longer has the music you like on the jukebox.
No bullet-licking sorcerer?
I'm in a state of Ramukanji Detox now..
I caught on late. That is now on my spotify sailing jam!
Excellent video,
Educational and illustrates what can be achieved with some TLC and effort. I think it must also be very satisfying to know the work is done properly
Hey where is ramukanji!? please bring back the Delos Anthem
It is so funny that I am sitting here trying to educate myself on something that I should know pre-guess whether the bootstripe is Rochelle Red or Fire Red which I guessed wrong and enjoy the personalities of the Delos her Captain and his Mate and Crew!
Funny thing is I am a Patreon of the La Vagabonde and Zingaro but I would like my personality to fit the Delos or damn I just need to sell more Marine Supplies so I can be a Patreon of 1 more Captain and his/her Boat!
Lord my Uncle that lived on Long Island would love this and so would his 3 Sons that moved to Seattle in the 80's!
Peter, Chris and Jeffrey Wright.
I wish I could find them for my mother that passed in 2016!
I love you too Dad.
Where's Ramukanji?
Pat yourselves on the back.....that was a huge job and you worked so hard. Well done!m
No Ramukanji introduction !!!!!, NO WAY !!!!!!!. It is either back or I wont watch any more videos!!!!!, yea right .........
Seriously guys, that song is part of Delos, without it, it is incomplete !!!
Delos looks slick... well done crew! Nothing like getting a big task done yourselves! Happy sailing ahead...
ps. I just found you guys due to quarantine, so am binge watching. Please forgive outdated comments....
Sprained ankle just to get out of work
Charles Chamberlain 🤣🤣🤣
Brian I love your boat maintenance videos. I'd love to see a little more about how you navigate and watch weather. You guys are truly inspirational. I have plans on getting something small.this summer to just get out on the water and learning
I want to say congrats on your marriage.......
29:12 As much as I always loved waking up to the sunrise on the beach, and following the sunset in the evening I can only imagine how sweet it would be to be on the water for these times. 🥰
I'm a hull-cleaning diver. Unless you can dive your hull every 2 months, use the most toxic paint you can. Turning your boat into a floating turd by not protecting it isn't eco friendly.
Curious why you would say that. Is it because of dragging foreign organisms around with you or is it something else?
@@p.t.anderson1593 you had me at foreign organisms...
@@grimreaper3526 LoL
Hey if that's your thing...
What does the expert think about copper coat? Good for your business or bad?
its in combination with ultrasonic gronk
You always get hurt Brady! I’m requesting to come aboard someday..My honey lived on a 396 Carver when I met him.. I lived two years on the boat .. but Bill.. he lived 6 years on it.. we love it
I love it when you guys get technical.
She's beautiful again. Great work!
I think this is one of the best videos that job made a very detailed looking forward to see how the bottom paint else up and where y’all go let’s get going
so satisfying watching you guys dismantel and make everything shine again:)
I first off, loving these videos... Im sure someone else has posted this... The trick to getting a good line with paint is the tape itself... Frogtape Always! So much better, than anything else... you can leave it on forever, it always comes off so easy.... doesn’t. Bleed through...I have learned the hard way...
You guys are amazing never did sailling but after watching your videos things changed in my life.
Thanks alot for your wonderful job guys love you be safe and enjoy your adventures.
Aj from israe.
The 1st minute and 22 secs is some of the best footage of such a grand vessel! She's a beaut'
I've enjoyed this episode and the previous one a lot. The specifics of boat ownership, operation and maintenance are tremendously interesting.
Amazing all the work you guys can do yourself. Bryaann is truly a jack of all trades and a master of all. Hull looks great. Can't wait for a new "sailing" video Delos.
I'm going to buy a T-shirt. 1. Because I like the style and 2. I am curious to see if I get any comments from people in my area. Jacksonville, FL. Thanks for all the videos. Living vicariously through You!
Valuable info! Thanks Delos
It's so nice to see, in this more and more conflicting world, 4 people working together in harmony on each of your projects. Such a testimonial of what mankind is capable of doing when they can put aside many of their self interests. So, happy that the crew is sharing all these adventures with us and, hey, Delos is back in the water!
Man I started watching Sailing La Vagabonde, and that got me hooked with sailing videos, but I fell in love with you guys as you appeared on my TH-cam out of nowhere, Missed your videos big time. Love from AUS
Man that bottom looked so slick I stressed out during the whole splash in procedures. Thought Delos wold slip right out of the low bed cradle! She’s looking mighty fine now!⛵️⛵️👍👍
Haha Business in the front, party in the back. Haha. Delos looks really good. Great work!!!
Delos has breathed some new life and she looks MARVELOUS. Im almost certain that after all that hull work she will be picking up a few knots on passage. Great video everyone, im really excited about the toaster oven and stove and all the hard work. This season is going to be EPIC! Stay safe my friends, as always Im sending my love and support from sunny Arizona.
