oh shit i was wondering about the 6 speed bc i have a 2000 nb and i was like wait did he say there isnt a six speed on 😅 like bro im driving it rn, nice to know mine is a special edition:,)
Great video. I didn't know that the NB1 and NB2 were so different. I have an 2003 "Special Edition" (NB2), and I love it. More "cool" than the NA I had originally, but just as much fun (and better audio system). I only drive it about 3500 miles a year, so I'll be leaving it to my kids when I die. I'll never sell it. I'm 73 now.
I have a 2003 nb2 I bought about 3 months ago. I had a 2000 nb1 about 6 years ago but I got t-boned in it. Had it fixed but never was quite the same so I traded it. Loved the car. Didn't know there was a difference until I bought this one and started noticing differences in the two cars. Then stumbled across your video. Very informative. Both mine are white with beige interiors. My nb2 has a hardtop and a soft top which I've never put back on it. Still debating that one. Love the cars. Thanks
I’ve been looking at Miatas and I was not aware that there were 2 variations of the NB! Great video and explanation. I’d say I’m a fan of the NB2 because of the more aggressive front bumper and the projector headlight design.
Man I love the NB1 gauges and “infotainment”. Properly 90s. More character than that 2000s fake aluminum look that was so popular (my 350z will filled with it)
I think the single most important advantage for both the NAs and the NBs is that they have four wheel double wishbone suspensions. This is much better for keeping the wheel flat against the surface and so much better road holding and absorption of curves and bends. One generally doesn't buy a Miata for speed, but for tactile handling. I would think that the engine that is most reliable and easy to maintain would be the preference. And of course, don't buy an automatic transmission - if you do that, then you might as well buy any other convertible that comes along, provided it has good quality.
I like my Mazdaspeed Miata. It has a lot of add ons specifically for it. Crazy how it only costed another 1k from the dealer when it was launched. I also used to have a nb1 and it was great as well.
Defi army have to go with the nb2 because that what I got. The car just looks more modern and polished. With just a few upgrades these cars are fantastic!
Just bought a 99 nb1 to replace our low k 2003. flood event unfortunately got what was a mint one (2cm of water in t foot-well in NZ means it’s a write-off). t 99 is a beaut, 6 speed, leather seats, Naardi wood bits,+ t 1840 motor....loving it. Really enjoy having one of these brilliant babes in t garage!
One thing you missed is that the nb1 has VICS (variable intake charge system) where as in the nb2 it has been replaced with the vvt and the intake was changed due to emission regulations
Like em both to be honest, but NB1 for me...everything on it looks kinda old school in compare with NB2...Head lights, tail lights, bumper, gauges, seats... So you have a kinda old school miata but with some basic comforts and safety...like AC, air bags, ABS, el.powered windows. So i couldnt ask for more. I love my NB1 and wouldnt swap it for an NB2. Cup holders on NB2 are so much better tho, but its a 5 min job to install it on the NB1. So an NB1 with NB2's cup holders/console part is a win win for me :D
I have a NB1. First time I have heard the reference 1 vs 2. Mine is a 99. My Mother purchased it new. She was 78 at the time. I am now the caretaker of it. About 70k miles. It is an Auto which is understandable. Very smooth shifting. Taking it out of overdrive does make a big difference.
NB1 FTW! I love both cars. but in the UK the NB1 is quite unusual to see. lots of people over here move to the newer headlights and bumper. but personally I prefer the original look of the NB1. I'm by no means a classic car expert. - but its far easier to get an NA or an NB2 than it is an NB1 in good condition these days
Nice comparison. Better headlights would be welcome, but they do the job. Same for the brakes. And seats, though I did add a lumbar cushion. And power. I prefer the more subdued simpler NB1 interior and gauges to anything I've seen in later models. Less distraction, especially with the top down and sun. Agreed about the center console -- pretty useless cup holders, though a good amount of space. The latch broke so I have a magnet to hold it closed instead -- much better. If the motor had any ignition issues they were dealt with before I got it at 60k, and haven't shown up so far at close to 240k.
I have owned both - personally prefer the look of the 5 spoke NB1 allows even though smaller rims - the VVC has better top end power and is a little more refined indoors
I haven't read a lot of the comments so maybe somebody's already said this? But it seems this would have been a tad easier going back and forth between the interiors if the tops were down.
The nb2 has a taller surf board looking headrest. I like the NB2 because it came in British racing green as the 2001 se. But the 2000 se is really beautiful too. I like the wood trimmed tan interior/polished wheels/tan top look.
Have NB1, I think Mazdaspeed NB2 is best bang for the buck if you have 10 racks. I hope this comment doesn't take some off the market. I want one. I think bigger injectors and a tune will have them hungry for smashing on S2000s.
Thanks for this! very informative. I had a 99 sold it with 200K miles and got a 2001 SE with 43K miles and a hard top. Both are fun cars but the NB2's headlights are so much better and the VVT / 6-speed (SE) really do make it a more fun car to me. My 99 had a cast iron exhaust manifold, in 2000 they went to a tubular header which I did retrofit to my 99. Not really and NB1 VS NB2 difference but it was a nice change from 99 - 2000
only problem is what you said about the engines. VVT is in no way more restrictive, the ports and valves are the same. non vvt is preferred for spec miata as it the lowest weight chassis, with the most relative power. its also the preferred engine for builds over the stock 7200 rpm, because the vvt system doesn't work well above that.
Thanks for the clarification on that. It seems like a major area of confusion on forum posts and it confused me too. The Spec Miata team I used to crew for avoided VVT cars like the plague
@@CashedOutCars no problem, for spec Miata racing, I could see why they avoid vvt. As it’s a lot more to go wrong compared to non vvt, for not a huge benefit, especially once everyone is already moving off the start line. The vvt block is my preference for street car build. As it has a main bearing support plate, making it stronger than any previous. as well as a wider oil pump gear that flows more
The VVT is the best NA/NB engine, period. Some avoid it because they don't want the added complexity and some other racing restrictions you face when having a swapped engine with a VVT. It is the best engine especially for turbo because the higher compression and VVT make the turbo so much more responsive.
I just bought an NB2, so I’m a little biased. But I do love the facelift of the NB2 better. I would’ve taken either though. I just love the MX5 in general.
I have 99 NB1 but It has swapped 1.8 vvt engine, nb2 interior (center tunnel with cup holders and seats) and momo prototipo wheel. So for me it’s perfect ;)
some of those differences are trim levels and probably local versions. My austrian nb1 has the white dials with the chrome rings around it too. nardi wooden steering wheel and knob. and a 6 speed.
In the NB1 only special editions got the white dials whereas NB2 had them as standard. 6-speed and Torsen LSD was either an option or restricted to limited editions depending on your location. As far a i know you could get 6-speed as an option in japan. In germany 6-speed was only available for the 10th anniversary and an other special edition (i think the miracle with a 1.9 liter engine, but not sure).
One good comparison that matters to some of us would be curb weight differences. The lighter car would obviously mean better if you plan to mod the engine for power.
My 1999 nb1 is in for renovation at the moment, sills and a spray job in bronze/gold , it's 1.6 57000 miles and drives really well , it would be nice to have electric windows though. Just subscribed 🙂
This is a great video! I didn’t know some of these difference, especially the cup holders. One question I had though: I thought the NB1 had the much shorter seats and the NB2 had the taller “surfboard” seats. Does your NB1 have non-standard seats or something?
I'd take nb2 but knew nothing of a subdivide amongst nb miatas. This shows how little I know. Maybe I am warming up to nb, I loved na for so long, I never wanted to look at anything but.
I own an NB2 and couldn't be happier with it. One change I made was to swap my stock black leather wheel with a mahogany rim wheel from the 10th anniversary NB1. It also came with a matching wood shift knob and handbrake lever, all of which I refinished and were a bolt on fit. That set is very nice and really sets off the interior. I also reupholstered my seats with new leather, putting black centers and tan outers in place of the tan to match the black and tan dash it came with. Washing the stock floormats with Dawn made a huge difference too. Mechanically it's stock as I don't do more than basic daily driving, but it's easily the best car that I've ever owned.
Good video 📹 👍 👌 👏 I myself own a 2004 MSM MX5 Miata. Very recently I purchased an Honda S2000, and I'm trying to sort out the difference between the two cars.
@@CashedOutCars I really can't say at the moment. Just because I haven't tracked the S2000 yet, I'm a little scared to track the S2000 because it has 227,000 miles. But i can tell you this much, the S2000 chassis feels a lot stiffer. The stock S2000 suspension feels stiffer than my stock MSM Bilstien struts. The S2000 shifter is top notch quite possibly the best shifter I've experienced by far. As far as power and performance is concerned. It feels like my MSM has more bottom end power and has more usable RPM's on the street as opposed to the S2000. The fun starts at 6k RPM's for the S2000 😃 As far as driving feel/performance/experience. The MSM feels like you are wearing biker shorts vs the S2000 feels like you are wearing cargo shorts. The steering feed back on the S2000 feels very different, I prefer the steering feedback on the MSM. But the S2000 chassis is very impressive and responsive.
I have to admit ignorance - I didn't know there were NB generations. I own a 1991 NA6 and owned a 2003 Shinsen. I bought the latter with the thought of replacing the '91. I owned both for a few months. Ended up selling the Shinsen and deciding to go all in on the '91. (Have been recording hours of work I've done on it that I plan to post on my YT channel at some point.) Two big things I didn't like about the '03: the white gauges with red lighting and the fat 3-spoke steering wheel. I like how I can rest my left hand in the spokes of the NA wheel. Biggest complaint I have with my '17 Ram is the 3-spoke wheel. Can't find a comfortable spot to hold it when just driving along. I'm planning to eventually turbo my '91. Took a long time to come to that decision because I really have a desire to put a V8 in a Miata. I am researching the NBs now with the thought of doing an LS swap in one later on down the line. So stock engine/trans means nothing - I'm interested in how the body looks and how it handles. Thus far, after 5 minutes of Google and this video, I'm undecided. But it's a great video to start the ideas flowing. I've got a timing belt to change in my '91 for now, so I'll dream of V8s another day.
Honestly your issues with the nb sounded pretty fixable and it’s shocking to me that you prefer the na over a shinsen. The shinsens are beautiful cars. IMHO
@@d3admaub938 It was gorgeous. If I get an NB, I would look into installing an NA steering wheel and switching out all the red bulbs. As to NA over NB, to each his own. I owned.
I have the 2000 SE. It has the 6-speed, white gauges ( like the 2002 SE in your video) and 15” wheels. The paint and interior tan are bomb! All wood Nardi steering too. Mines too nice to seriously mod but I do have the Fox coilovers, and aftermarket exhaust and air intake. About to do a radiator swap before it starts to leak. 55k original miles. And the sweet aventi bronze wheels to match the paint.
My NB1 is fantastic. I consider the 2000 model year the best. I did change up my brakes, though. I found the stock ones with the SE package hydroplaned pretty noticeably in wet weather, so I went to slotted ones. I had an interesting electrical problem, which I admit was my fault. I put Bosch Platinum plugs in my car. Didn’t like them. Switched to Denso plugs, which were a vast improvement. Note; Miatas apparently don’t like European manufactured plugs. Get the Japanese ones. Anyhow, when I installed the Densos, I failed to get one wire firmly on the plug. It ran well for a bit, then a misfire began. Took out part of the coil pack, which, in turn, took out part (5%) of the Cat. All in about 5 miles. I replaced the coil pack, but as for the Cat, a bit of tape over the check engine light. 🤷♂️ Still runs fine at 115K miles. Still have a check engine light. No rotten egg smell, so I’m good. The valve cover gasket got replaced with the timing belt and water pump at about 100K. It still blows oil from the filler cap with full synthetic and constant 4 grand and above revs. Don’t trust the oil pressure gauge “idiot light”. Check the level manually… a lot! Oh, that yellow dipstick ring WILL break off. Eh… 🤷♂️
Both of you guys have to sand those headlight lenses! I like the NB1 front bumper, gauge cluster and steering wheel better, but overall the NB2 is probably what I’ll get for it’s improved creature comforts and engine
They're both methods variable valve timing which is why I made that comparison in the video. But yes, in practice they do it in very different ways and like you mentioned. Once we finish Matt's K swap we can do a nice comparison between the two!
@@CashedOutCars I'm not referring to how they work. The Mazda motor simply cannot switch to a high lift cam because it doesn't exist in the motor. The switching to a high lift cam is what enables Honda motors to achieve high output in their 4 cylinder naturally aspirated motors.
@@CashedOutCars vtec is in no way similar. Vvt is vvt, all engine manufacturers call it vvt. Vtec, VVTL-i, and Neo-VVL are all incomparable. All of these have dual grind camshafts, which as the name suggests, have two grinds on the cam. At a certain rpm, the engine switches to a higher lift and duration cam lobe to promote power, by opening the valves further, and for longer. Vvt simply changes when the valves open and close. I've driven cars with vvt, and vvtl. Vvtl pushes you back in the seat, vvt doesn't.
NB1 and NB2 anti lock breaking systems also differ. NB2 anti lock breaking system has a built in ECU whereas the NB1 has a separate ECU just as a NA Miata.
Interesting, my NBFL Phoenix doesn't have the lock switches on the door handles, though it has power locks. Maybe its because mine is an EU spec and yours is a US spec (I assume)
i think its difficould to get all teh info correct in a video like this cause of all thee spec differances but it whas pretty good i think. my nb2 came with all the uppdates except it has the nb1 engine as stock. no vvt but it has abs power steering and remote key locks
NB2 is the way to go, way more of a modern look and better performance. On a side note I have the same SE in the same color and your friend did a dishonor by putting after market wheels the y spoke enkei’s that come on the SE are the best looking stock wheels Miata have ever come with they look like the spirit R wheels on the FD actually the whole car looks like the spirit R down to the color lol
@@CashedOutCars yeah it comes down to personal preference, I’ve always liked y spoke they’re my favorite type of wheels, so when I was on the market for an NB I was so glad I was able to get an SE with factory y spokes
I have an NA8 but tbh I think if i were to make a frankenstein miata out of mine I'd take more parts out of the NB1 vs NB2. However both have their benefits, y'know?
I know it’s not relevant to this video but a year ago you uploaded doing the cam cover gasket, just wondering if it went alright without putting any sealant on?
i thought the first gen. with pop-up lights were nb1's. without pop-ups were nb2 neither of the cars in video has pop-up headlights? driven '02 since new...
Nb1 came with 5 speed, 6speed, 4.30 (for auto) or bare bone base model, 4.10 lsd for most factory manual 5 speeds, and 3.9 for the special editions nb1's. They have 140 hp but instead of vvt like the nb2 have they have what is called VICS which is butterfly valves inside the intake manifold which is vacuum actuated based of how vacuum is being pulled at certain rpm to help produce low in torque and mid range power, nb2 have a 142hp from the factory but even then it's not much of a difference. Nb1 and nb2 have essentially the same size rotors and brakes but the sport brake are 1" bigger in diameter I believe from 10" rotors to 11" rotors, while in stock form the sport brakes are good just like the normal caliper's anything over 250hp and you run into issues. Nb2 had the option of 15" and 16", the Mazda speed Miata which is essentially a nb2 body with a nb1 bp4w drivetrain and a factory turbo kit has 17" I believe. Nb1 had 14" For base models but most that had a good bit of options had 15" rims
@@CashedOutCars no not true at all lol the only gearing we didn't get that's not in the US is a 3.63 lsd, which is what I'm running. You have to import those to get them or find someone who has one. Like I said a bare bone base model nb1 manual will have a 4.30. but a dead give away most of the time is if it has leather seats and its a manual from the factory then it will have a 4.10 lsd. They're have been some cases where I run into a cloth seat manual nb1 with a factory 4.10 but its just based on what options came with the car
I'm into the nc1. But popularity makes them hard to find for a reasonable price $. Considering a nb2 but I'm of the opinion that it looks too cute or something.
4:03 uhm i have a nb1 and nb2 both have power locking but none of them have that button they just do it autoatically when i lock the drivers door European versions

Thanks for all the info I'm planning on getting a nb1 turbo miata soon here
Most of the differences I like the nb2.
As a night person the red lighting in the dash would be more comfortable on my eyes.
Makes me want to buy an NB some day. Honestly cant decide between the two!
Buy whichever comes your way for the right price, you won’t be disappointed. I found my NB1 for sale fifteen miles from my home. I love it! ❤️
You got a nice NA it seems, I'd stick with the one you have if it were me.
some of those differences are trim levels and probably local versions.
Lighter is better for many things. The NB2 is a heavier car by about 100 lbs, in general
@@CashedOutCars That's good to know. I like the way the NB2 looks more but the NB1 is more of a classic Miata look.
My 1999 nb1 is in for renovation at the moment, sills and a spray job in bronze/gold , it's 1.6 57000 miles and drives really well , it would be nice to have electric windows though.
Just subscribed 🙂
Appreciate the lightweight car any extra weight is bad my 1.6 1999 bronze 58000 now is a wonderful drive , roof down in all weather's 👍👍
This is a great video! I didn’t know some of these difference, especially the cup holders. One question I had though: I thought the NB1 had the much shorter seats and the NB2 had the taller “surfboard” seats. Does your NB1 have non-standard seats or something?
These are the stock NB1 seats! The NB2 ones certainly hold you in a bit better and may be a bit taller, but it's not a huge difference
Great video. Thanks for posting. I thought NB1 seats are the same as NA
Both a great choice
Im from Germany and I am planning getting an MX5 NB2 probably. i Might do modifications but in a sleeper look. should look stock.
Awesome Chanel man. You are very through and know your stuff. New subscriber, and thank you
Welcome my friend! Thanks for the kind words
Dunno if anyone else has this, but the Miata I have was built in October 2000. Has the full interior of an NB1 but the full exterior of an NB2.
I'd take nb2 but knew nothing of a subdivide amongst nb miatas. This shows how little I know. Maybe I am warming up to nb, I loved na for so long, I never wanted to look at anything but.
I wish I could've sent you my car for the comparison! I have a silver NB1 with fog lights.
I just replaced the center console lid too lol. I'll probably replace it again down the line.
That would have been awesome, enjoy yours!
Great video. Both NB are top!
I heard that A/C comes standard in NB2 whereas it was an option in NB1, but maybe that was here in Europe
Of course I prefer the NB1, as that is what I drive 🙂Good video, thanks.
That's how I made my pick too! Thanks for watching!
Should talk about how different they drive, vvt versus not
And I think maintenance on non vvt is cheaper and easier
Good video 📹 👍 👌 👏
I myself own a 2004 MSM MX5 Miata. Very recently I purchased an Honda S2000, and I'm trying to sort out the difference between the two cars.
Both great cars. Which do you prefer? I’ve been eying S2000s but they’re quite pricey
The fun starts at 6k RPM's for the S2000 😃
As far as driving feel/performance/experience.
(Have been recording hours of work I've done on it that I plan to post on my YT channel at some point.)
Two big things I didn't like about the '03: the white gauges with red lighting and the fat 3-spoke steering wheel.
I owned.
The 99 doesn’t require premium fuel, but 2000 models (maybe years to follow?) do recommend premium? That would make the pre 2000 desirable, to me.
That Phoenix steering wheel is mint. Need to replace the leather on mine.
Yes it is, that’s a very nice and low mileage car!
I have a 1999 10th anniversary NB1 and it does come with a 6 speed
I have the 2000 SE. It has the 6-speed, white gauges ( like the 2002 SE in your video) and 15” wheels. The paint and interior tan are bomb! All wood Nardi steering too. Mines too nice to seriously mod but I do have the Fox coilovers, and aftermarket exhaust and air intake. About to do a radiator swap before it starts to leak. 55k original miles. And the sweet aventi bronze wheels to match the paint.
Enjoy that thing, sounds like a nice car!
I also have a low mile 2000 se..put that mazda speed intake cam in you will love it ...
Still runs fine at 115K miles.
Eh… 🤷♂️
Great video 😊 I just bought a 2012 I love this car for your you tube channel 😊where do you find what model it is?
Thank you! You can send the vin to Mazdas and they’ll tell you what options it has on it!
another great video, thanks ! so what do you do for the NB1 cupholder breaking, is there an easy fix, have you done a video of it ?
I'd recommend putting a NB2 one in if possible! You can DIY a fix with epoxy and some reinforcement but I haven't personally done it
Both of you guys have to sand those headlight lenses! I like the NB1 front bumper, gauge cluster and steering wheel better, but overall the NB2 is probably what I’ll get for it’s improved creature comforts and engine
I sold my NB1 long ago, maybe the new owner did the lenses! I currently have a V8 90 and a turbo 93
Good info, thank you!
Awesome video
I don’t know if you guys have it in the states but there’s also an NB2.5 that’s a mix of both
Is the nb2 also named as nbfl ?
The NB1 is like the NC before they made the ND.. Trial and error with the NB1, then came perfection with the NB2.
VVT is not like VTEC. VVT can only change the cam angle, whereas VTEC can also switch cam profiles to a higher lift cam.
Nb2 add a little bit of comfort of suspension and weight a bit more. They are very comfy but a bit less sporty.Perfect for cruising I love my nbfl
Agreed, they're very nice cars!
No single person needs cupholder in an miata :D Btw: The NB (1) is what i choose after i could test them all for short time.
NB1 and NB2 anti lock breaking systems also differ. NB2 anti lock breaking system has a built in ECU whereas the NB1 has a separate ECU just as a NA Miata.
That's good to know, thanks for your comment!
Interesting, my NBFL Phoenix doesn't have the lock switches on the door handles, though it has power locks. Maybe its because mine is an EU spec and yours is a US spec (I assume)
I Owned aNB2 and love it 🙂
Whats the spec on the nb2 wheels? They look mighty nice!
It has 15x7 Kosei K1s with RE-71s! It’s a great looking and great performing combo
@@CashedOutCars what’s the Re71s?
The tires!
i think its difficould to get all teh info correct in a video like this cause of all thee spec differances but it whas pretty good i think. my nb2 came with all the uppdates except it has the nb1 engine as stock. no vvt but it has abs power steering and remote key locks
The stock wheels are nice on those for sure, but I'm a big fan of the K1s personally :)
@@CashedOutCars yeah it comes down to personal preference, I’ve always liked y spoke they’re my favorite type of wheels, so when I was on the market for an NB I was so glad I was able to get an SE with factory y spokes
Question, just bought a 04 , Have you done a video on Change into halogen lights?
Thank you!!
I have an NA8 but tbh I think if i were to make a frankenstein miata out of mine I'd take more parts out of the NB1 vs NB2. However both have their benefits, y'know?
You should've shown the difference between to base miatas
If you have two Miatas, an NB1 base and an NB2 base, bring em to me and I’ll film another video! It’s uncommon to find a Miata with no options at all
@@CashedOutCars sorry.. mine is an nb2 LS :(((
@@CashedOutCars you should go to the groups on Facebook, I know a few guys with base miatas there
Bit late to the party, but what wheels are on the NB2? They suit the car very well.
I have a 01 Miata special edition tan on British racing green
What does the ratio refer to, final drive (6th) you didn’t mention about LSD
I may be biased because I own one, but the NAs are my favorite.
I have both, so far I feel the NA is a more special car but the NB is the better car
Those buddy clubs P1s 😍
Kosei K1s here in the US :) but yeah I love em. Matt’s got them on his K-Swapped NA, and I’ve got a set on my Turbo NA too!
@@CashedOutCars oh that’s interesting, TIL
I know it’s not relevant to this video but a year ago you uploaded doing the cam cover gasket, just wondering if it went alright without putting any sealant on?
Just responded on the other video :)
What's your favorite second gen miata the nb-1 or the nb-2... yes! LOL
Agreed :)
i thought the first gen. with pop-up lights were nb1's. without pop-ups were nb2 neither of the cars in video has pop-up headlights? driven '02 since new...
Nb1 had 14"
For base models but most that had a good bit of options had 15" rims
I believe all NB 5 speeds and autos were 4.3s, at least here in the US. The 4.1 was in mazdaspeeds and NA8s
Find a source that says there was a 4.1 from the factory in a NB1 in the US, I really don’t think there was
@@CashedOutCars forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=550885
Yes they had torsens, that’s no question. but they’re not 4.1s in NBs except for the Mazdaspeed
I'm into the nc1. But popularity makes them hard to find for a reasonable price $.
Considering a nb2 but I'm of the opinion that it looks too cute or something.
Did you know the rubber part off the steering wheel comes off in the middle
The nb2 tries to resemble the rx8 more while the nb1 takes design queues from the rx7
It’s so weird to me that most people like the nb1 over the nb2 in the comments
I know. Nb2 looks a bit sportier. In my opinion at least.
I retrofit a bunch of nb2 parts onto my nb1. I definitely prefer the center console of nb2 and the front bumper.
Sweet! I just put an NB2 console in mine last night
4:03 uhm i have a nb1 and nb2 both have power locking but none of them have that button
they just do it autoatically when i lock the drivers door
European versions
