- This is Part 2 on how to get started on your own cargo trailer to camp trailer conversion. The roof vent installation is fairly easy, proven by the fact that even I can do it! This would be the same for any RV installation, whether its a van, trailer or motorhome.

Love your work! Those plastic strips make an easy one-man job putting ceiling panels back in. I have same ones. I've found that if you stick the fuzzy part of Velcro strips to bottom of jigsaw it makes for great non-scratch cutting. I use an old tooth brush after each job to clean out any shards.

Hi Phillip! After having hail destroy it twice I bought a hail proof one and have been pretty happy since. I don't know if the critters are going to like it or not.
@@gonagain yours have a screen with it? i have the hends roof vent colonial white model with the metal lid.
_May I make suggestion? Buy some Henry Enviro-white elastomeric reflective roof coating, and do the top of your trailers. It will make a world of differences in cutting down the hot sun beating down on the roof. You can get a gallon of it at Lowes for about $40.00 I did my trailer with two coats, and two gallons, man, on man, did it help. Before you couldn't even touch the roof, now it warm and not a problem. Just a little trick I learn and passing along. : )_

Hey Rick great video. Give some consideration to a video which covers trailer tire prep before leaving; inspection, preparations for tire repair on the road (equipment, plugs,compressor etc) not so much a how-to but rather what to prepare for and what to bring. If you’ve covered all this I must have missed it but I do remember one about that goopy spray-in flat fix junk. Thanks

Speaking from experience you should get a rain guard to go over that roof vent because the sun really dry rots that vent top and in a couple years it will end up being very brittle and leak, The cover will protect it from the sunrays ☀️ and you can also open it in the rain 🌧
Thanks for the rain guard tip. The problem I've had in the past is with hail going through the vent. I bought a hail-proof one a couple of years back and it's been good so far for that.
I just did one, I put a thick bead of 3M 5200 under the flange that's all no self leveling caulking on top, should be forever, I framed in underneath, with 1" steal square tubing. I use 5200 on my boats it last forever we'll see how it does on a galvanized sheet steal trailer roof, I don't expect anything going wrong
As a sealant I think it's great, as an adhesive to plastic not so much.
Funny....i just came i. From doing the same thing to my trailer project. Here in Arizona however, i had to put a piece of plywood across my roof. Too darn hot up there

My preference, I would have gone with a Fantastic Vent or a Maxxair Fan. Same opening, just need 12 volts run to it and you get that wonderful breeze on a hot day or night to take the edge off. I actually installed two of them on the TC. My tool trailer is a 6x12 with tandem axles. When I retire, I may do a conversion on it. For now, I'll concentrate on making the Truck Camper more comfortable. In fact, I have to do some estimation work on a set of house plans, it's muggy in the house, and I can turn on the AC out in the TC for comfort. You take care and I hope your getting full retired dad wages for all this free work you guys are doing.
I see that Maxx Air has a whisper quiet model. That might be good.
@@gonagain Another thing good about a fan is you can remove the screen, put a light in the center of the opening, set the fan to blow outside, and the fan will suck out all the bugs in your camper in minutes. I especially enjoy the sound of the bigger bugs being pulverized by the blades.

I Need to Thank You! and YOUR Daughter..perfet timing; Just got a trailer hitch. now looking to see which trailer I will get; we favor a 6 x10 or 12 with dexter 3500 axle ; like the V nose look; and 2 back doors; So, seems like the prices are much better in GA or AL than here in PHX; not as impressed w Interstate loadRunner price here compared to what I see east of Mississippi; Also, no one here wth 16" on center ; plan on towing w the Highlander Ltd rated at 5k. @@sidneywhite749 None. just bought a 2011 Highlander Limited w 124k miles, bought a new 6 x 10 single axle 1050 lbs, drove 7500 ft elevations, no prob.
Make sure it opens toward the rear and either close or lower it way down when under way..

Great video. I will be swapping out my existing roof vent for a vent with a fan. You are correct, it id not that difficult to do. Looking forward to watching your window installation video. Here is something you make want. place peep hole around your trailer so you can see if something goes bump in the night. like in your other video with lights above them.
They make some pretty good ones for homes these days that would work great in an RV. Linda has mentioned getting them but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Thanks!
I would have started the screws at one corner and done them in line in order. There is no reason to skip to the ends. In fact, it adds stress.

Another fine job. I can't hold things up over my head anymore is my problem. What ever I do with the ceiling is going to have to be lightweight.
That must be a problem with your shoulder? That would hurt.
@@gonagain Yes there is Two years ago my arms locked and I couldn't even uncover myself to get out of the bed. They worked on my neck and I have movement back in my arm's but still can work over my head yet. The Doctor told me I wouldn't be able to do a lot of things and I have already done more than he told me. I just never give up I'll go until the put dirt on me.
Well, you know what they say, "Getting old isn't for wimps". I can attest to that.
@@gonagain It's not just the getting old with me when I was 2 I died from Spinal Meningitis at 2:34 am and at 2: 42 I came back to life they told my mother that I wouldn't last love because of the Meningitis but here I am they also told her after 6 months that I would be brain dead well OK maybe they had that right lol. I was a sickly kid up until I was about 12 and then for some reason I seemed to have recovered. Then while in the Army I was in a APC that went over the side of a Mountain that killed 3 and I was in the Hospital for 6 months with a head injury and when I got out of the Hospital I got jumped by 4 guys and ended up back in the hospital and when I came to they told me that they lost me for about 2 minutes. Then about 5 years ago my Gallbladder messed up and I hit the ground my wife called an Ambulance for me and they headed to the hospital and lost me in the Ambulance and got me in the ER and the Doctor said I was gone to long to even try to bring me back and I heard him say that and replied to him bring me back from where. So I figure God's not done with me yet I have something to do for him before I go and he'll keep me here until I do it.

The trailer actually came with the ceiling installed. I know, it surprised us too, but I'm sure the panel retainers are a common RV item. It's 1/8th inch prefinished paneling and the edge just fit's into the molding on the ceiling.
Aloha again Mr. Gonagain again! Since you seem to be pretty ingenious at times in making things easy and simple yet practical and inexpensive, I'd like to pick your brain if u don't mind... I'm considering cutting a rectangular hole in the floor of.my 6' x 12' cargo trailer in order to either build (or buy) a light weight storage box (with a lip) that would fit into that hole the floor. I was thinking of using the metal floor frame to help secure the box and it wouldn't be deeper than the bottom of the axle (approx. 8-10" deep in my case). It should be flush with the floor and (obviously) open fr the top and remain propped open when opened. And ideas on if I could use one of those plastic storage bins which slide under your bed or would that be too flimsy? Or what light weight materia/ (wood?) would YOU use if you were to build your own box? I got the idea from watching how they'd place a gray WATER tank under the floor! Hello Art! I think the plastic bin like you mentioned would be too flimsy because of the chance of rocks bouncing into it. I'd look for a metal box of some sort that could be modified to fit or a heavier plastic one. You could also build a plywood box and fiberglass the outside. That's easy to do and most hardware stores sell the necessary supplies.
@@gonagain Yes. Those were exactlly what I 'd been thinking about (except for the fiberglassing part).I think all I need to do is either build it or find it (At Goodwill or Offerup or something). When making your own heavy gauge battery cables do you simply crimp and shrink wrap or do you solder as well?
I usually don't solder my heavy gauge cables, but I use a crimping tool to get the best crimp.

Many cargo trailers (tall ones) are close to seven feet.

Hello Frank! The vent is doing great with no problems at all. We never did add a fan on our own trailer because we don't like the noise. In some parts of the country where it's more humid, a fan might be necessary.
Great video! I just got my Vent (came with a fan). Mayt I PLEASE ask u what kind of screws u used to secure the vent to the roof/wood shim and what was the thickness of that wood shim? I assumed u drilled the one forward side into the metal rail? Sorry to bother you. BTW, GREAT JOB with the MAKE-SHIFT LEAF SPRING when it broke that day!! Hope to meet u one day!

Hello! The screws are more correctly called "self drilling" screws because the tip is shaped like a drill bit. The front screws did go into the frame and the back ones went into a wood shim the same thickness as the frame is. If you see us on the road please come over and say hello!

Very nicely done, but what about a small fan to help circulate the air when you are camping, up into the bottom of the vent area inside to take out the heat, since you like desert areas and a screen to keep out the bugs when its open and the fan is not working?...
We haven't felt the need and think it would be too noisy in the little trailer. During the day we're always outside anyway, sitting in the shade.
@@gonagain Ok I see you point, I on the other hand think the time for a fan is to keep it from getting to uncomfortable when you do want to use it for resting up after you sight seeing adventures...
@@jimmybutler3728 I just saw a great reason to install a good fan. Take the screen out, hang a light on it and reverse the flow to suck all the bugs out before you go to bed. Now if that isn't ingenious I didn't know what is.

Hello Dave, the vent is screwed to the frames with self drilling and tapping screws on the front side and is screw into plywood on the sides and back.
I was wondering why you did not use a vent that west front stud to stud for stability?
The vents on the market are 14" x 14" and don't quite bridge the gap. I could have added more framing, but none of our trailers (3) have had any problem being installed like this.
I have a question regarding ceiling mounted fans. I am doing a 6x12 conversion and dont want any holes in my roof. I am thinking of mounting one one a side wall, as high as I can go. This will place it almost a high and will still be able to pull out hot air. Comments??
I don't think you should worry about the cut out in your roof if you seal it up properly and I've never had one leak myself. You may actually have more of a problem if you try mounting one on it's side instead of flat. A good roof vent is a joy to have if done correctly and it's easy to do it that way.
I really love your channel. I need your advice. I am a 75 year old widower and want to do some traveling on a budget. What vehicle and trailer is desirable. Is traveling alone safe. I am in good health except for dome arthritis. I live in hot se Florida.
We think it's safe Sidney, but we always keep our eyes open and use common sense where we camp. I would recommend a Casita trailer and a Toyota Tacoma to pull it. Or a Yukon or Tahoe is good too.
Gonagain I have a Toyota Highlander.
That may be a little small, but if you only get the 13' Casita it might work. Don't take my word (or the word of the Casita salesman) but look it up and ask others who own Highlander.
looks great....what are you using to snap the ceiling panels back into place so easily??
This particular trailer came with the ceiling panels already installed from the factory so I don't know the brand name, but it's just a plastic trim piece that the 1/8th inch thick panel fits into. It must be out there in trailer supply somewhere. Oh, it's the same stuff they use on commercially manufactured trailers on the walls between panels! Also, it's fastened to the ceiling frames with two sided sticky tape, which is most likely on the trim when you get it. I hope this helps.

Do you wish you had a 7 foot wide trailer? I was looking at trailers and the 6 foot wide seems to be for shorter people who want to do east west bed and such. Also do you think 7 foot wide would limit you in anyway in the trails?
My tires are the same width as a 7 foot wide trailer (7'10' total width). The 7 foot will limit you on narrow roads with overhanging trees and brush, but the tire stance is the same. I sleep crossways (I'm 5'11') but I purposely made my bunk wider so that I could angle a bit for length. Most of the time I sleep on my side so that it isn't an issue.
What did you use for your roof panels inside?
We used painted 8th inch luan ply.
What did you use for ceiling panels?
This trailer actually came with the panels installed, i was surprised. They are a pre finished eighth inch ply, but I don't know where they came from.
Went to home depot to buy a saber saw. No one there knew what it was. I must be getting old.
Really? I think they've taken shop classes out of most schools these days and it shows.
Is there any reason you couldn't put your fan high on the wall? I just don't want to mess with the roof. You could position so the cover would shed the rain.
Thats not generally acceptable because it doesn't let heat escape out the top. We've never had a problem with the roof vent leaking.
Rick, knowing what you now know and your experience with the 6x10 size, would you choose a larger trailer or stick with the 6x10?
I went with a 6 X 12 after comparing the interiors, the extra 2 ft made quite a difference, I also had extra height, but sad I have to sell it since it didn't work for my wife with her handicap.
@@budbrown2053 they make single axle 6 x 14 too. The seven foot wide is too much wind resistance.
Linda and I have spent many (many!) evenings sitting in camp having that discussion and we always come back to the 6x10 because of the rough roads we travel and the places we've had to turn around. If we were staying in more civilized places I might chose a 7x14 like one of my daughters has.
@@gsp49 yes that would work also, I found the 6 ft tows well with the V nose. With the 14 ft you could install a shower.

Just asking.../ Why not a MAXX AIr FAN? or one with a motor?
That's the only one I would even consider because Maxx Air has that whisper quiet model. So far we've stayed away from them because of the noise. Also, it's pretty dry here and not all that hot so we haven't felt the need very much. If we were back east it would be a different story, I'm sure.
I do have a odd question. If you were inside doors closed and some bad guy comes along and puts something in the outside door latches how do you free yourself? Just had to ask that because I know people and what the can do.its just What If that’s all.

Greg p well I am fat now and no way I can fold up like an accordion and clear the trailer with only 8 to 10 inches of clearance from the ground. Just picture that if you can.
Yes, a decent solution. But I'm an inventor, so I'll give you a way to go one further. A trailer requires a fairing for aerodynamics. This space is best used for non-structural and non-accessible use. An incredibly cheap air2air heat exchanger made out of 10" insulated flexible duct, 3"x4 flexible aluminum duct, and a super efficient and incredibly silent Broan bath fan will fit in a fairing and provide you with pure air while not increasing your HVAC load. Simple venting is ever so last century.
Why didnt you put a fantastic or maxx fan?
I don't like the noise and haven't missed not having one.

@@cabinbythelake luan takes paint well. Use a good primer first to fill the pores and it'll be fine. Have you looked into pre-finished paneling of any sort? It might have to be special ordered at your home supply/lumber store. I don't have any particular recommendations for that.

Question: if you have windows why do you need this on the ceiling?
Having a vent in the ceiling pulls the hot air out and fresh air in through the windows.

You can, but then you have to cut each layer separately so it's more work that way. It's just easier to make one cut.
