    I picked up the Clarity Vx plugin from waves a while back. As someone who wasn't too keen on audio processing, I loved its simple, basically one-knob operation. Loved how that helped me clean up some muddy dialogue with essentially no effort. However, I purchased iZotope RX Studio a few months ago an that software is simply incredible. I still use Clarity Vx for quick simple things, but when it really comes down to it RX gets the job done well. Thanks for this great review Curtis! Always a satisfying experience to watch one of your reviews!

    Hi, Curtis, if you remember, we traded some direct emails about a year ago or more. You were nice enough to respond. I was having major issues with this in getting a clean sound for speech and trying to get a mic off camera far away from the camera using lower end shotguns from Rode and Audio Technica, etc and you told me my room was likely not treated. It seemed to be impossible to fix. Trial and error - nothing worked very well.
    Wow! This product is amazing. It compensates for room imperfections to the point where you can almost record in any room you want, even one that is not treated. Not perfect, of course, but, if my demand was for perfection, I'd have or be renting out a pro studio. At this price point, it will up the game for everyone substantially.
    On a budget as I mentioned, I already had an old Audio Technica AT8035 I used to use in field in broadcast situations and as it turned out, it did as good as the Rode shotgun that I bought and returned through a Focusrite Scarlet into my Dell into Sound Forge Pro. I was going to add a DBX 166 or something in the chain, but, the Sound Forge plug-ins including Izotope's Nectar 3 in post on the audio were satisfactory. I'd prefer to be using a Shure or Electrovoice classic mic, but, I need the shotgun to keep the mic off camera.
    BUT, NOW, that I've added this Clarity plug-in into the mix, I've been able to achieve a dramatic improvement on my mediocre work-around. Which is now, I guess, mediocre plus and quite acceptable for my objective!
    Always enjoy your videos! Wanted to say Hello!

      The folks at Production Expert had a De-Reverb plugin blind listening shootout recently and Acon Digital came out far ahead of their competitors. The Waves plugin has come out since then and seems to be alright but based on anecdotal reports online Acon is still a better solution.

  • @jefjaeger
    @jefjaeger 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The problem with many of these plug in demo videos...using audio files that are not seriously messed up. The 'reverb voice' in this demonstration is pretty mellow and simple to fix in my opinion. I would like to hear the problems most of us encounter in everyday audio problem solving. Audio problems where the plug in software can not completely fix the audio. We all have to find that 'sweet spot' where we are getting an improvement, but need to back off from hearing obvious artifacts. The demonstrations I view are all pretty clinical. The 'problems' are completely fixed - all nice and shiny. Most audio issues are not so easily solved...

    Hey I know you often mention sound blankets in your videos, I'm wondering if there's a good reason to avoid the budget options? For instance, an Angler brand blanket on B&H is $27, compared to $68 for a similarly sized Matthews blanket. I see the Matthews is about half the weight of the Angler, is it just as or more effective than the Angler?

    • @fluphybunny930
      @fluphybunny930 ปีที่แล้ว

      The weight and therefore thickness of the blanket is what helps absorb the sound.
      It can still be far cheaper buying budget blankets and doubling/tripling them up.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  ปีที่แล้ว

      The weight and type of fibers used seem to make the biggest difference. I haven’t used those particular blankets so I can’t say for certain, but heavier usually is more effective. In their specs, they *should include a noise reduction coefficient (NRC) graph that will suggest how effective they are. Those without an NRC may be suspect.

    So I'm curious as a reverb sound design tool, if placing this at a very low setting after an extremely modulated reverb algorithm can glue that reverb to the source sound or does it do the opposite and create more distance between the sound and the reverb. Does anyone have experience trying that?

    This is pretty disappointing,, when you're really Crank it up The voice is start to sound weird and it doesn't do that great of a job, I mean yeah you can reduce it a little bit but somebody like a voice actor would not be happy with this I don't think, no I thought the original clarity vx did a really good job at removing some light background noise but this thing I don't know. Maybe on a cheap set of headphones it would do the job good enough but on a good set of headphones, definitely not

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      De-reverberation is a band-aid. The real solution, especially for voice actors, is to record in a space without so much reverberation.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also note that while adjusting, there'll be some odd phasing, but after a few seconds it settles (for both plugins).

      @dannylightning-audio-reviews ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@curtisjudd Thanks, i hear you on that. i would love something to get rid of that last little bit of room reflections i get in my audion also, one thing with voice acters is sometimes they have to travel travel and they need to record something and they often make a make-shift booth out of couch cusions and what not in a closet in ahotel or something, if this plugin really worked it would be awesome but it seems abit diasapointing.. When i watched the demo waves did for this plugin it was perfect, dry vocals with no artifacts but when i went to watch some review not made by waves, that was not the case.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dannylightning-audio-reviews Yes, works great on some samples but definitely hit and miss. You can trial it and run some of your own audio clips through it. Might work ok on something with just a touch of reverb. I gave it more of an acid test, to be fair.

      I found Clarity Vx to be like magic in my testing but iZotope is useful in many more ways than one, with the standalone app and multi-stage processing to clean up audio. The advanced version is expensive but very useful for dialogue editors like me.

      @curtisjudd  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alexandereditsvideo Agreed. In a larger context, RX Advanced is a bunch of tools that I don't plan to give up despite the better options from Acon Digital and Waves for reverb. I use the best tools where needed, they don't all have to be from the same company.
