Salima’s Journey from Actor to Playwright

Continuing with Salima Raza’s story…
As a young adult her innate acting talent blossomed after she joined Delhi’s oldest theatre group Yatrik - started by Roshan Seth, Sushma Seth and Joy Michael, amongst others, back in 1964.
In fact, her performance in ‘Nati Binodini’ earned Salima a well-deserved ‘Best Actress’ award at the #Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards.
But Life, as they say, has its own plans.
Losing her husband suddenly after 56 years of marriage, Salima uprooted herself and shifted from Delhi to Mumbai. A decision that led to facing a huge creative void.
In the first part of her story we learnt how, as a child of the independence struggle, Salima witnessed both parents fight fiercely for India’s freedom from colonial rule, despite being imprisoned. Alongside this, growing up she also saw her talented aunts #Zohra Sehgal and Uzra Butt, singing, dancing, performing for Uday Shankar and Ravi Shankar.
This unique experience influenced Salima’s understanding of what creativity and resilience mean, allowing her to absorb both these determining traits within her own personality.
10 years after moving to Mumbai, Salima makes it back to the stage in a new avatar - Directing & Scripting a play on Indian poet Majaz Lucknawi, at age 85!
