I guess Texas chainsaw massacre is set in summer, as they're all sweating it out in that van. Or It Follows, as they're in the pool & at the beach during it.
I think what makes Summer Horror like Friday the 13th, Jaws, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Wicker Man so perfect is that it plays with the notion of daytime relaxation and safety. People say winter can be cruel but summer is just as cruel if not worse
I’d love to see a sequel-esque video on winter horror (autumn based horror is too easy 🥴)! It’s got such an interesting vibe and can really lend itself to isolation and the raw power of nature. Plus, any chance to bring up The Thing is a good chance.
YES!!! First suggestion - "The Lodge". I watch it every winter, on the first snowfall ❄️ 🌨️! I also watch Stephen King's "Storm of the Century" at least once every winter.
It’s so true. I’m much more willing to forgive plot craters when a film doesn’t hide behind the dark, unknown trope. Even jaws leverages the unseen threats hidden by the ocean. It’s one of the main reasons why despite being dog shit by any other benchmark, I love house of wax, the hills have eyes, jeepers creepers, hell even final destination. They have to work a little bit harder and earn their jump scares in unique ways
I think it's also being on summer break from school as a kid hanging out with friends and watching a pile of horrors rented from the local video store (I'm old now)
FEAR STREET was awesome summer horror for me in 2021. I needed something to tide me over until Scream 2022. 1978 captured Friday the 13th’s feel while putting actual children in danger instead of just 20 somethings. It took the danger of kids like IT or The Body and merged it with that classic camp feel.
Ok... I just turned on the video , about 33 seconds in, and I'm nervously lookng around expecting Orange Cassidy to come into my room xD (Yes, that's the primary context in which I think of this song :P)
Stranger Things Season 3 has solid summer horror vibes. It’s all public pools, movies at the mall, boring summer jobs, and a Fourth of July carnival, while a particularly goopy monster lurks in the background.
I found it too glitzy and ruined the feel of the whole show - especially that vomit inducing duet while his friends were about to die - RIDICULOUS. Only plus point was Dacre Montgomery as sexy Billy
How are you still only at 100k subs! Your absolutely one of the best of your kind of youtube, I'm elated to see that bell pop up with your name on it. You're a legend Matt
I absolutely LOVE "campfire" and "Camp" (NOT "campy", ugh) horror. I think those subgenres go with "summer" horror for sure. Just some of my fave movies, simply due to the setting. Movies like all the friday the 13th series movies are absolutely dripping with atmosphere, and I just love going back to those places. "Outdoor" horror, I suppose, would be an extension of that form of horror as well, all under your "summer" horror master category. Good one!
This ironically popped up the day after I watched The Burning for the first time yesterday. I love summertime horror and all the adjacent horror tropes mentioned toward the end, especially road trip horror.
Matt is back and I'm happy to see him here. That Jaws poster always gets me thinking about that and the Meg's imagery of a giant Shark about to swallow something whole
Oh damn, did you HAVE to remind me of the ending of Sleepaway Camp? That got me so badly when I watched it the first time! And yes, the Raft story from Creepshow 2 is also "chef's kiss" 👌
My early childhood was the late 1970s/early 1980s, so I was often way to young to see any of these movies when they came out. But whenever I saw the movie posters on bus stops and subways or billboards along the highway I would fantasize and imagine the terrifying storylines I was missing out on (Friday the 13th Part 3, Prom Night, Dressed To Kill, Halloween 2, Cujo). A tiny part of me was actually sad when I would finally get a chance to see them (edited for television, on cable or satellite dish, or finally VHS tape). Nothing could compete with what my imagination anticipated! Ha ha
Ahh summer and horror films… they almost go hand in hand. Other than the fall season, I most associate horror movies with summer. Simply because I remember the rush of adrenaline I would get each June when that final bell rings. I remember summers loaded with SNES and horror movies action galore with my best bud Nelson. Those carefree halcyon days were the best!
I saw Jaws in the theater and was very afraid to take a shower for a while. Excellent video! TCM, Jaws and several unsung slashers you mention are just masterpieces. Nice touch with Rear Window. 🎥
If it's not Jaws as my summertime horror pick it's Nope. Gosh I just love those movies. People fighting monstrous predators but also it's full of subtext. Just the best. Bright, sunny, horror. Edit - I'm throwing in Annihilation here and you can't stop me. Warm, colorful, horror!
Some great daylight summer movies. I will say that, after the release of the director’s cut, Midsommar feels less like a breakup movie and more about how vulnerable people can be easily indoctrinated into cults because the cult raises them up whilst their friends and family let them down.
My favorite lazy summer horror movie is Friday the 13th V: A New Beginning. Something about it’s slow pacing and cast of different characters remind me of lazy summer days when people just hung around and try to come up with things to do
I have this feeling that summer horror is like a rollercoaster ride and the theme park "theme". A wild ride which you yourself get to make your own decision how sick you're willing to go.
I'd love to hear you cover EC comics and their influence on modern horror. No one ever really talks about the massive pop culture influence it had considering it inspired Steven King, John carpenter, George Romero and George Lucas among others.
Watching while working on some horror related stuff of my own. In my spare time I've been reading some summer slasher novels, and I just feel the setting is so great. It reminds me of my teen years, before the military, before responsibilities, back when summer felt so carefree until I began thinking of "what if" after watching the various slasher films you mentioned. Great video as always! My favorite summer horrors are, of course, Friday the 13th parts 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9 along with the remake, Sleepaway Camp, TCM and its sequels but still need to see the burning. It Follows was a trip, my wife introduced me to that recently and it was interesting for sure. Some of the novels I've read that give me the same feel as these movies are the "Kill River" trilogy, "Golf Curse", "Camp Slasher", "Camp Slaughter" plus I recently started a novel of my own I hope to finish.
As someone born and raised in Detroit, IT FOLLOWS looks like it was filmed in late summer/early fall, but it definitely has the mild summer vibes that Michigan is known for. There's always a storm on the horizon.
I could not agree more man ! As a certified hear hater, summer horror movies really speaks to me both aesthetically and story wise. Friday the 13th will always be my jam just as much as Tremors !!!
Zodiac is not a horror film... but when I think of summer scenes that are terrifying, I always think of that scene where the young couple are brutally attacked by the Zodiac killer by the lake. The setting was so picturesque and absolutely gorgeous surroundings...then ultimate horror takes over...basically reminding us that you're never safe.
This video was so cool! Such a well spoken breakdown with the perfect pairing of scenes/movie choices to explain the point. Truly, I have to rewatch some of these movies just because of watching this. I really loved Disturbia, Midsommar, and the original Evil Dead, but I haven't seen a lot of these too!
Days that are too long and sleepless nights. Oppressive heat and air too thick to breathe. Bloody sunsets. Insects whipped into a frenzy. Plants wilting in the heat and merciless sun. Food spoiling and decay setting in rapidly. The two that speak to me are Higurashi and Midsommar. They understand the unease that summer makes me feel, feeling like I'm at some tipping point.
The "Creepshow 2" segment "The Raft" always gives me summer vibes - albeit Late summer, it's almost time for school vibes...😉 Edit; had just finished this comment when the clip of "The Raft" was on screen! Apparently, I'm not the only one who gets that vibe.😁
Welp I guess I have to deal with the fact that my birthday day will forever be associated with killings at Camp Crystal Lake 😔 Great video as always Matt. Really think it’s interesting to see horror play out in locations that are outside the normal Fall/Halloween/ early winter time. It gives an even greater contrast with summer time iconography with slashers and creatures. Jaws, Peele’s movies, Tremors and Texas Chainsaw rank among some of my favorites in this sub genre
STD slasher lol that is not a term I thought I would ever hear, but It Follows is kind of like that. Funny topic though because I feel like the winter setting is also under used, being trapped in huge amounts of snow presents its own problems, never mind an unseen force, obviously The Thing comes to mind, 30 Days Of Night, Storm of the century and walking dead did an arc set in winter which was interesting for a zombie show/comic, I believe that's when they first encountered the whispers too, which made it even more terrifying. You should make a video on the winter season too, I think it would be interesting. Oh I can't hate on Jason Takes Manhattan either, but yeah the series roots is most certainly in summer camp horror.
Excellent video to me summertime horror is overlooked in the genre of horror also stranger things it and us are great summertime horror films. Also cover CARPENTERS APOCALYPSE TRILOGY AND VILLIAGE OF THE DAMNED
The Evil Dead is a good movie. I like the remake too. Jaws is the best creature feature movie. We know more about space then we do.About the ocean. I feel sorry about Jason. Life was hard on him. Sleep Away Camp. What can I say about Angela. What a twist for slasher. That Midsommer was very shocking. 🦈🐺🔪🐊🎥😃
Friday the 13th. Nuff said. Your put in a situation where no phones no electricity. You in the sticks, and you have no way of communication. What’s your favorite summertime horror movie?
I can’t remember if this film was set during the summer, but in recent years, I quite liked The Beach House.
It Follows. Just beautiful
I guess Texas chainsaw massacre is set in summer, as they're all sweating it out in that van. Or It Follows, as they're in the pool & at the beach during it.
Predator Friday the 13th and I know what you did last summer
Mine Demented.
I think what makes Summer Horror like Friday the 13th, Jaws, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Wicker Man so perfect is that it plays with the notion of daytime relaxation and safety. People say winter can be cruel but summer is just as cruel if not worse
Where I live summer is quite cruel while winter is a blessing
That CM Punk reference isn't gonna go unnoticed lol
I thought I was the only one that caught it haha
Fun Fact: For Texas Chainsaw Massacre, John Larroquette's payment for doing the opening narration was a joint
Nice work if you can get it
I’d love to see a sequel-esque video on winter horror (autumn based horror is too easy 🥴)!
Great suggestion! The Children (2008) and The Blackcoat’s Daughter are two of my favorite winter horror movies.
While it’s not a pure horror film, no film makes you feel how uncomfortable heat can be like Predator. Texas Chainsaw is a close second.
The sound in the predator is some of the best ever. Turn up the surround sound and feel like you're really in the jungle.
Saw 2, Saw 6, and Final Destination 3 make heat feel pretty uncomfortable lol
I think predator 2 dose it better
It’s so true. I’m much more willing to forgive plot craters when a film doesn’t hide behind the dark, unknown trope. Even jaws leverages the unseen threats hidden by the ocean. Tremors is a perfect movie no matter which way you slice it. One of my favorite movies of any genre.
Ok... I just turned on the video , about 33 seconds in, and I'm nervously lookng around expecting Orange Cassidy to come into my room xD (Yes, that's the primary context in which I think of this song :P)
that cm punk quote made me cackle. good job dude!
I really enjoyed this. I could never explain why summer horror hit different, but you broke it down nicely.
You clearly aren't versed in the horror of Bumblebee
Burnt Offerings, The Bay and The Lost are some personal favorites that bring the summer vibes.
@@prbsnoop1974 the duet was pretty stupid.
Texas chainsaw is the most eerie movie during summertime in my opinion and it's not even close
How are you still only at 100k subs! Your absolutely one of the best of your kind of youtube, I'm elated to see that bell pop up with your name on it. You're a legend Matt
Thank you so much!
This episode is so well edited and written I feel a bit shabby watching it more or less for free. Mucho Props.
I love the CM Punk quote hahaha love your videos dude!
I absolutely LOVE "campfire" and "Camp" (NOT "campy", ugh) horror. I think those subgenres go with "summer" horror for sure. Just some of my fave movies, simply due to the setting. I actually had to rewind the video, thinking "why do I feel like I've heard that line before."
You just know 'Jane' by Jefferson Starship got put here because of 'Wet Hot American Summer' -- fantastic!
Matt is back and I'm happy to see him here.
That Jaws poster always gets me thinking about that and the Meg's imagery of a giant Shark about to swallow something whole
Thumbs up for the CM Punk quote.
The only horror film that genuinely scared me was the one about a car with a mind of its own.
Herbie Rides Again. It really was terrifying.
The best summer horror movie I've seen recently is Summer of '84. I love the Spielberg-esque feel of it, with a genuinely horrible slasher and ending.
Summer 84 is such a lame and boring misfire imo...
I’ve wanted to write a summer based horror movie for the exact reason you described here. One of my personal favorites is It Follows.
I love how you've been revealing your favourite movies bit by bit
I hear you “I still believe “ playing in the background 😎
Ahh summer and horror films… they almost go hand in hand. Other than the fall season, I most associate horror movies with summer. Simply because I remember the rush of adrenaline I would get each June when that final bell rings. I remember summers loaded with SNES and horror movies action galore with my best bud Nelson. The intro to this and your Indy retrospective leads me tp believe youre a Gourley and Rust fan or listener.
I appreciate the Wet Hot American Summer nod with Jane. Bravo sir
My favourites for Summer are Sleepaway Camp, Return of the Living Dead and The Lost Boys.
Matt Draper + Horror Films = Me Happy
I had recently searched for a video with a list of the best summer influenced horror films. Thanks. This is perfect!
Piranha 3D (2010) is insanely underrated, don’t think I’ve seen an actual bloody/gory thriller & horror before or since 😏
I loved that movie, and thought Elisabeth Shue was bad-ass!
@@shanecasebeer1364 she was awesome in that!
Excellent vid and appreciated the CM Punk reference😉
Dang it, Matt Draper! With that background music playing I was hoping to see Orange Cassidy to show up.🤘💗
I saw Jaws in the theater and was very afraid to take a shower for a while. Excellent video! TCM, Jaws and several unsung slashers you mention are just masterpieces. Nice touch with Rear Window. 🎥

A comment just for me lol
Great video! I think The Burbs is also another Corey Feldman summer themed quasi horror comedy. Bringing the summer terror into the familiar
"The 'Burbs"!!!! YES!! One of my all time favorite movies - I can basically recite it, word for word.😆😆
Kicking it right off with a nod to Wet Hot American Summer? Nice😎
but...also, Orange Cassidy?!
Love that you mentioned Us, as that was the first Summer horror I thought of for recent examples.
Summer horror is a favourite of mine. From JAWS to Sleepaway Camp to Texas Chainsaw to Mandy Lane. 🌞
Some great daylight summer movies.
I will say that, after the release of the director’s cut, Midsommar feels less like a breakup movie and more about how vulnerable people can be easily indoctrinated into cults because the cult raises them up whilst their friends and family let them down.

All great movies. Jaws might be my favorite film of all time but so many of these are just amazing. Thanks for the video!
I'd love to hear you cover EC comics and their influence on modern horror. No one ever really talks about the massive pop culture influence it had considering it inspired Steven King, John carpenter, George Romero and George Lucas among others.
top summer horror’s gotta be nope (2023), it (2017), fear street 1978 (2021), midsommar (2019), and sleepaway camp (1983)
I almost lost my Coke when you quoted CM Punk 😂
That's a shame, Punk is much more of a Pepsi guy.
Pepsi plunge

The CM Punk quote caught me off guard
Babe, wake up.
New Draper just dropped
"...just enough life..."
That's it.
Another great video, love the vibe of this channell!
Awesome video Matt!!! Thanks for sharing 😊🦝👽🎃❣️✨🍿🎥✨
Thanks for the amazing video Matt ❤
I highly recommend two Spanish, hot summer horror movies: "La semana del asesino" and the amazing "¿Quién puede matar a un niño?"
The "Creepshow 2" segment "The Raft" always gives me summer vibes - albeit Late summer, it's almost time for school vibes...😉

It's an honor, really!
"Sleepaway Camp"!! But, for me, "Jaws" is the ultimate summer horror.🌞🌊🦈😁
Every Friday up till the 8th, I know what you did last summer, Texas Chainsaw least the first 2, Jaws, The Burning, Sleepaway Camp, Tremors
I appreciated the clip from Just Before Dawn! One of my favorites.
Oh damn, your channel is great.
I just discovered your channel and I must say, your videos are so good. I wont miss any new releases 🤝
Awesome video 👍
I love me some creature feature summer horror. Jaws, Piranha 3D, Snakes on a Plane, Anaconda. It usually involves the outdoors too.

Awsome video. And the intro song remind me of Orange Cassidy for some reason 😏
👍🍊🕶️
Summer horror movies my favorite is jaws a giant man eating shark and happy horror summer like happy summer
Jane by Jefferson Starship is a great song.
Okay so I thought you might be a wrestling fan by kicking of the video with Jane, but then you directly quoted CM Punk and I actually gasped lmao.
all the boys love mandy lane >>>>
Excellent video to me summertime horror is overlooked in the genre of horror also stranger things it and us are great summertime horror films. Also cover CARPENTERS APOCALYPSE TRILOGY AND VILLIAGE OF THE DAMNED
I do like the summer horror films well Jaws will be the king of summer horror. 🦈🦈🦈🦈
Didn’t expect a cm punk quote here lol. Great video: Subscribed!

Loving that CM Punk reference ;)
Nightmare Beach, Summer of Fear, Blood Beach...
Nope is a great summer rewatch.
Totally agree
THE CM PUNK REFERENCE! 😂😂😂😂
Hey what was thatr trac used for the background music at 11:01
Friday the 13th. Nuff said. Your put in a situation where no phones no electricity. You in the sticks, and you have no way of communication. Texas Chainsaw Massacre also holds a special place in my heart. That was the horror movie that scarred me as a kid. Evil Dead is great for Gore, Gore, and more Gore. But also another daytime summer horror would be Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead. Yes apocalyptic but still every where u turn u can't hind. Zombie here and Zombie there. But I'm droning on lol.
