  • The newly restored de Havilland Mosquito KA114 flying at the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach on June 12, 2013. This is the only flying Mosquito in the world at this time. She was built in Canada but sent straight to reserve storage on completion in 1945. Eventually, in 1948, she went as surplus to a farmer in Alberta who apparently used it for random parts. In 1978 she was discovered, "rescued", and again stored until 2005 when Avspecs in New Zealand began her full restoration. After initial flights in New Zealand, the Mosquito was disassembled and shipped to the US, flying again in May of this year. This video is of her headed to the airshow in Hamilton, Canada.
    Sorry in advance about the shaky camera work, but I was looking over the camera rather than through it for much of the fly-by. I think it captured the sound nicely, at least.
    The jet noises are Oceana F/A-18's flying overhead

    My science teacher who flew Mosquitos in WW-2 told me an amusing story. The Yanks had their new (best twin bomber in the world) A-26 Invader, one would often buzz their airfield on their way back from a mission. This became so regular that a response was in order. So, Mr Pegler was waiting with His Mossie. Sure enough along came the Invaders. . One broke off formation and going like a Bat out of Hell Buzzed the RAF field. Old Tom was waiting above and came down on the Invader and drew along side. After the customary waiving. . Tom shut one engine down. . . then. . . accelerated away!! Needless to say. the field buzzing promptly stopped. Nice to see another one flying.

      Hey boringtractor, you must be an expert on the the Mosquito, the greatest twin engined fighter bomber of WW2. About the mossie being a handfull on one engine, would you tell everyone where and when you flew these wonderfull planes and why was it such a handfull on one engine,
      yours sincerely,
      Mr Sidderley.

      @soaringtractor I read a story in Aviation and Space Technology magazine when I was in the air force, a man by the name of Russ Thayer was piloting an A-26 when a Mossie came along and put him in his place. A&ST mag is a highly respected AMERICAN magazine in the aviation world, so this is very likely NOT a BS story. By the way, Thayer was one of the folks who stated up a now defunct airline of which the name escapes me, I have a clipping of the story from the magazine somewhere, I'd scan it and post it if I could find it.

      Jack Mann I can imagine that if you wanted to put on an extra display of speed in a Mosquito you could tidy up the air frame and wings by dropping out all but one of the carried armaments ,masking over the gun ports.Also a base commander might organise a gloss paint re spray or at least a high polish of the exterior surfaces Aerial cables could be dumped and a whip aerial substituted.,To improve climb and reduce control drag all recesses around ailerons ,etc,could be taped up.Internally excess manuals ,seating ,ammunition sent overboard.Any removals of course would require the counterweight to be retrimmed to restore balance.Fuel tanks would at minimum safe tankage.A session with the engineers and mechanics might see two low hours engines tweaked to the limit and the pilot told to delve into the emergency power rating.Another dirty tweak might be the substitution of the tail wheel for a plain skid.Nothing new here .Some would comment such idle projects had no place in war,but just read up on special projects,high speed reconnaissance planes,lightweight Mustangs etc.After all a bit of fun is good for squadron morale. A mosquito in the above fighting trim might have been capable of springing a surprise on Britain’s allies.

    Someone should bring back the design with composite construction and turbo prop engines.
    Fit a Gatling gun in the nose and you’d have a stunning ground attack tool. Far cheaper to operate than A10s.
    The Testse Mosquito was fitted with a 57mm 6 pounder anti tank gun and Mohlins auto loader.

      @davidelliott5843 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Allies were fixated with four engine heavy bombers yet a pair of DeHavilland Mosquito could carry more bombs than a B17 at much higher speeds, drop them more accurately and use just four crew instead of 14 (Lancaster) or 20 crew (B-17). The B17 had such heavy defensive armaments it’s long range bomb load was just 4000 pounds. Same as one Mosquito. The Lanc could carry 8000 pounds same as two Mosquito. Two smaller planes with just four crew and same number of engines could get the job done.

    A beautiful British plane and due to the war effort and shortages in Britain was designed and made out of plywood (It must be remembered the war started for the UK in 1939 whilst the US didn't enter til the very end of 1942, nearly 2.5 years later) this construction also took less time and saved on weight and it also utilized furniture makers and carpenters etc and so left professional airplane production workers to continue with other much needed work. The use of wood also saved using precious metals such as aluminium etc which was badly needed elsewhere and surprisingly the Mossie was an all round, dynamic and multi performing aircraft that was the fastest plane around for quite a while. A legend !

      +Glenn 103 Yes, the U.S. entered the war in Dec 1941, but did not fight in Europe until the invasion of North Africa with the French in Nov 1942, hence late 1942. The U.S. didn't even have forces in mainland Europe until mid 1943 with the invasion of Italy, so the Brits were on their own until then.

    I told Jerry a few yrs back about a bunker in Bavaria Germany that has around 20-30 ME-262, Fw-190s, and ME-163 but full of water. Jerry got me in contact with his friend Frank Caly, who was living in Munich at the time and I flew there to meet him and the Monument Department to discuss findings I discovered that would reveal the location of the bunker. However the Monument department rejected my evidence as insufficient for a dig, however I know the planes are still there to this day. The condition of the planes is unknown and I gave up on the project. The only guy I know who has a picture of the bunkers entrance is a quirky guy who doesnt want involved, or be contacted. So until someone takes my testimony seriously someday, theyll just remain in the bunker and deteriorate overtime.

    So where are the navigation and landing lights on those "night fighters"? And weren't those wide-open "exhaust stacks" pretty difficult to "conceal" with flames blowing out of them? Especially at "over 400 mph"? The idiocy of anybody claiming a plane that weighed more than twice as much as the vaunted "Spitfire" and with far more drag and only twice the "horsepower" could be "the fasted plane in the world" in the early 1940s when there were AT LEAST THREE U.S. "fighters" that could hit 400 mph and only one of them need "twin engines" to do it and NONE OF THEM HAD MERLINS "UNDER THE HOOD" is fucking HILARIOUS. Especially when any "official" performance data should have been in "KNOTS" RATHER THAN "MPH".

    • @larryelliott7933

    • @martinell7672
      @martinell7672 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It took 30 seconds on Google to find that KA115 was a FB Mk 26, fighter variant: not a night fighter. That makes your first criticism seem somewhat uninformed. When originally tested, the prototype was 30 mph faster than the Spitfire at the time. Second criticism shot down - where does that put your "idiocy" claim now? The Mosquito was the fastest production warplane in the world from 1942 to 1943/4, but by 1944/5 it had been surpassed: the P-47 and the P-51 were faster, as were about a number of others. Attempts were made to use jet engines on the Mosquito, but it had reached the limits of the airframe, and conceded its place to newer designs - but it wasn't until the advent of planes like the Tornado that a truly multi-role warplane took center stage again.
