Taekwondo rules stat for minor injuries you have 1 minute to recover from. If you’re not back on your feet when the timer ends the rules state that you aren’t fit to compete and it’s considered a forfeit.
The rules at the time allowed for one minute of injury time out, after which the athlete could request an extension if necessary to finish receiving first aid treatment. Otherwise, he had to resume the match or lose as a referee's stoppage. The medic was not finished wrapping the Cuban athlete, Matos's foot, and he and his coach therefore expected time to expire and the referee to call the athlete to the mat, at which time he could ask for another moment so the medic could finish doing up the wrap. Instead, as soon as the clock hit zero, the referee immediately ended the contest (i.e. Matos needed to be on the starting mark before the time hit zero). Additionally, the Cuban side argued that the Kazakh athlete intentionally lifted his knee to block the kick, which would be a penalty, meaning that Matos would be declared the victor.

It's interesting how the martial arts community is unaware that Taekwondo has rouds and is classified as full contact. I trained in Karate and Taekwondo and they are completely different styles of competition, with Taekwondo having more contact, unlike the common sense. For exemple, in Taekwondo WT knockouts are allowed, while in Karate WKF not.
Just because KO's are allowed doesn't make it a viable option, which it very much isn't if you actually see competitions. TKD has KOs, and Karate has takedowns, which are band aid fixes to bigger problems. At the end of the day, they're both extremely point style based and that's what makes you succeed
@@gamerT.V I competed and had regular sparring sessions in both disciplines. In my experience in Taekwondo the contact is heavier. In Karate you don't even need to touch your opponent to be considered a point. It is true that in Taekwondo, for tactical reasons, the fight ends up being oriented towards scoring points rather than seeking knockot, but while in Karate the contact is almost discouraged in Taekwondo the contact is necessary and many athletes will try to take your head off if they can. As for Karate takedowns, most of them are not extremely violent, they are more about to sweep the front leg unbalancing the opponent to score a point with a punch after the fall rather than throwing him backwards onto the ground.
Even if knockouts are allowed in WT you don't really see them at the highest level, point based combat with light strikes is just a more efficient way to win under the current ruleset.
@@matroqueta6825 the knockout factor is just an example to illustrate that the system of rules between the modalities is different. Taekwondo WT having more contact is a natural consequence of the rules that classify it as full contact, while in Karate WKF the rules are semi-contact.
