I have been greatly enjoying your B&N sale videos. Thank you for making me aware of the filmmakers Ritwik Ghatak and Lino Brocka. I have three of the four movies you refer to here on order. I am particularly looking forward to The Cloud-Capped Star.
Hello David! I hope you are well. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. This has made me very very happy! I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on the Cloud Capped Star if you have a chance to see it my friend. Have a great rest of your day!
@@DaisukeBeppu I have just watched The Cloud Capped Star and am overwhelmed, stunned by this movie. What stays with me at the moment is the music and it's many moods and contexts, ecstatic, soaring, triumphant, tender, slashing with whips of pain, reverberating with sobs of grief. The film is surpassingly beautiful to look at, whether it be the stately row of trees leading to the village or whether it is Neeta's dancer-like eye movements. I know that this will be a film I revisit often. Thank you once again, Daisuke, for your impassioned advocacy for The Cloud-Capped Star, a film which, I think, attains the dignity of tragedy.
Hi Daisuke, thank you for all the wonderful Criterion recommendation videos. Your videos during the sales are actually one of my favorite things about the sales, I always look forward to watching them. 🙂 You usually highlight movies that are not on my radar, which makes it all the more interesting. The Cloud Capped Star is definitely one I want to check out now. I must admit I stay away from the Scorsese sets because there's too much violence in some of the films for me personally, (not in A River Called Titas, but some of the others) my nature is too sensitive for it, but I'm sure most film lovers would enjoy the sets. Thank you for taking the time to share, as always. Have a lovely weekend, my friend.
Hello Paula and thank you so much for your kind comment! Oh yes, I think that you will really enjoy The Cloud Capped Star. As far as I can recall, there are no scenes of intense violence in the film. Anyway my friend, I hope you are well and please have a lovely, lovely weekend!
Quite a bit of recommendations of filmmakers I’ve either not heard of or at least haven’t paid too much attention to this Criterion/Barnes & Nobel sale. Thank you Daisuke.
Hello Daisuke, I went to Barnes and Noble this past weekend and picked up the following titles: Picnic at Hanging Rock Naked The Last Days of Disco Babette's Feast To Be or Not To Be Cluny Brown Great video as always and I hope you're doing well!
This is a great list of acquisitions. Really great indeed! I hope you enjoy them! Please let us know what you think about the films when you get a chance to see them! Have a great rest of your day my friend!
I love the fact that you're focusing more on Asian Cinema, of course European films are magnificent, but these directors deserve more attention if not just as much as well! I've been really stressful lately because of work but your intro's music is really soothing and your personal opinions on films remind me of my biggest passion (cinema), thanks a lot!
Hello my friend, and thank you so much for your comment. I hope things become less stressful and that you have a great rest of your day and weekend. Cheers and talk to you again very soon.
Hello, Daisuke! I hope you are doing well. I just came across this video. Thank you so much about expressing your valuable views on these films. Although I am an Indian myself, I have to say Indian Parellel cinema Arthouse movement is very very underknown and deserves more recognition. The reason I am saying this is... I too am just discovering this side of Indian cinema very recently. Partly, the reason for this under-recognition is the large scale industry for popular cinema where there is also not even enough fanbase for offstream and regional cinema other than Bollywod. In addition, I have observed that Satyajit Ray is generally the only filmmaker most of the world cinema fans associate with Indian cinema. While he is absolutely a stalwart of cinematic form, I am having a great experience discovering hundreds of other indian filmmakers. I have only seen Megha Dakha Tara and Subarnalekha from Ghatak. Looking forward to A River called Titas! Warm regards.
I’m loving this series! A lot of great analysis and very good recommendations of potential starting points for people unacquainted with the directors your discussing, and it’s always just great to hear your personal thoughts and experiences with these auteurs. Especially in the context of the current sale. Do you have any plans to do one of these types of videos with Fellini, Truffaut, or Godard?
Hello my friend and thank you! You are very kind. As for your question, to be honest I am not sure. I would love to but it depends on if I have the time. I cannot promise anything but I will certainly try.
Unfortunately, I have yet to see any films by Ghatak but the two that you mentioned in this video sound great. If they are anything like Satyajit Ray's work (at least in terms of filmmaking quality), I'm sure I would love them.
Thank you my friend, and yes, I think you would really enjoy the films. I would love to hear your thoughts on them when you see them. I hope you are well.
Thanks for reviewing Ritwik Ghatak's works. I truly enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work. Have you checked out Satyajit Ray's works available under Criterion ?
Always like when you do recommend videos during the sale. Through them have discovered so many films, i now consider classics. Watched Three Outlaw Samurai tonight, really like how it plays with honor, loyalty, and truth. Very interesting how the characters react to the information they receive in it. Ask you Daisuke about The Naked Island? Trailer and its story look interesting, what are your thoughts on this film?
Thank you very much! So, yes, regarding the Naked Island by Kaneto Shindo, I Iike it very much. In fact, I think I did a video on Shindo and the Criterion Collection, where I mentioned The Naked Island! Thank you for reminding me of it. th-cam.com/video/agq2o2IP5u8/w-d-xo.html
