Just FYI for anyone who doesn't have the priming piece or cannot use it with their faucet.... You can also prime the filters by just soaking them in water! Berkey has instructions for doing this. It takes a bit more time because you have to wait at least an hour (maybe several), but I think it is easier and less messy than using the priming piece. When you first submerge the filters in the water for priming, the filters will want to float. But as all the air gets pushed out, the filters will "sink" into the water. You should use a container that will allow the filters to be completely submerged. Hope this makes sense. Otherwise, look it up! :)

Thank you. The little filter ring in this video wouldn't work with my faucet. I tried the blue primer that was included with my travel berkey but it wouldn't work either. All that did was back my water up until it came pouring out under the sink into the cabinet. It was at a very small rate flow too, just like in this video. I tried a different faucet. Same thing. A flood under the sink. I will soak them next time. I just threw a bowl and towels under the sink and primed them anyway and cleaned the flood up afterwards

Just changed out my Berkey filters but hv lost priming instructions. This video was a blessing to find…thank you. Was frustrated 90 yr old with same complaints ie back/shoulder/hand fatigue in first 45 seconds with exhausting kitchen faucet method! All comments were so helpful! What has worked for me was the garden hose (I have a blue RV filter on garden hose)
Using a large yard/storage bin…. hv placed large cutting board (any type board will do) over half of bin. This being an arm rest. Container catches water overflow. I arrange bin, yard hose, and chair next to flower beds and am able to reuse accumulated bin water for yard.
I place chair at ‘board’ end of bin, leaning forward, arms on board, place garden hose, adjust an easy flow of water, sit, leaning forward with forearms on board, position Berkey filter with brown primer & in front, but directed away from you……water flows into lower bin….dump when needed.
Sound complicated I know but….its just a bin, a board, hose and chair & muscles of a gladiator to dump bin! lol! Learned to dump often.👍 This keeps water spillage in yard plus a happier back! Method would work on building terraces/sm. patios. Save bin water for pot plants. 🤗

After a messy first try, I screwed the the plastic screw on upside down, which is a great base for the priming cork. This way it is much easier to put enough pressure on the connection so that the water goes through the filters instead of everywhere ;-). It worked like a charm!

IF YOU'RE HAVING ISSUES PRIMING: use a bathroom faucet. I tried for an hour at my kitchen sink with the spray head with no success. The spray head faucet is too big. The idea with the rubber puck is to create a seal at the faucet. As soon as I switched to the bathroom sink (just like in this video) it worked instantly

Hello just to share a quick easy way to prime the filters....
    1. Use a fresh dish washer sponge scourer with rough side wash down both of the filters.
    2. Fill up the bottom half (plug in) of Berkley almost to the top. Leave half of the pipe on top of filter above the water. Submerge each filter separately.
    3. Place your mouth over the exposed part of pipe and suck. Continue sucking until the air lock releases and water come through. Repeat 3 times to ensure water flowing through freely.
    4. Place filters into upper chamber and water should come through with in a few minutes.

I had priming issues so I used a syringe that I got at Tractor Supply for 38 cents. They come without the needle and are used to give livestock shots I think. You have to buy the needles separately. I just kept filling up a tall glass of water to be able to draw the water into the syringe and then I squirted it into the filter until it was primed. The syringe fits perfectly on the filter's hollow threaded shaft.

I tried several methods to prime one filter that just would not prime. I used the initial priming pad, the hand pump, and finally the blue silicon adapter (paid extra for it) which would NOT work with any sink or bathtub faucet in my home. Finally, I used the blue silicon adapter outside with a water hose, and it still would NOT prime. Disgusting! I decided this was a bad filter and luckily I had a second set. Finally could prime a filter off the hose with the blue silicon adapter ZIP tied to the hose. Now I have to try to get a refund for the bad useless filter. [Note: my husband and I are experienced DIY types and have built walls, installed tile and lighting, installed plumbing, installed laminate flooring etc.]
Worst designed priming system ever. Hand pump falls apart or will not regain air, silicon adapter will not fit over even a tub faucet or a modern wide kitchen faucet and the small priming pad is too small for modern faucets.
Berkey needs to wake up and redesign this ABSURD system, we need something that screws on the filters with a LARGE size (multiple sizes perhaps) silicon adapter to fit modern plumbing and a hand pump that doesn’t fall apart when you use it. The pump should come in ONE piece not a bunch of bits that fall apart; try that with a bucket when you are camping out.
Berkey, Go to Home Depot and Lowe’s and try the useless silicon adapter on a large kitchen faucet with integrated sprayer and you will see the problem. Try the hand pump under multiple conditions and see the darn thing fall apart. PLEASE fix it, as wonderful filters are useless if they cannot be easily and quickly primed in multiple situations.
Had I realized the absurdity of the priming situation I have would NOT have bought this system. Luckily I tested my Big Berkey ahead of hurricane season. So one lesson here is to test any system before you desperately need it. Also, buy extra filters in case of duds. Good Luck!

@@kalijuri I agree 100%. However, I found an effective and affordable solution. Go to the dollar store and buy the large condiment squeeze bottles (it was 2 for $1.00). Fill a squeeze bottle with water (refill as needed) and squeeze into the filter opening until water comes through the filter along the full length. It takes only a couple of minutes and you can do this easily at home or while camping. This is far better than high tech designs that do not work…

So I’ve just ordered my Berkey, only to learn that a separate primer apparatus (I don’t think this company calls it a pump) is available as an additional purchase. There’s no mention of a primer pump or anything of the sort in the product description. I was considering cancelling my order until I found this video. So is the little round, brown gadget you held up against the faucet included, even though it’s not mentioned in the product description? Thanks.

Aren't you priming with potentially contaminated water? You are pushing tap water into the outlet.

If you can get a 20cc syringe without the needle you can prime it that way, that's what I did with mine. Worked great!!

I need to know how to clean between the double glass oven door. I’m prepared to sell my stove if I can’t get it clean. Lol I hope in the near future they start making that glass more accessible.

Didn't expect to spend an hour trying to screw the knob on the lid. Don t they own the right sized drill bit for gods sake for 300 bucks.

I guess if you are priming with poison tap water, you will need to dump your first batch of water?

Removing the wingnut makes it harder to hold the filter level with the faucet. Just leave the wingnut on and put the priming washer over it and you should listen to me because I am a man and know more about nuts and bolts.
