They should not call it a "sanctuary" if they let humans engage with the animals. Sanctuary is where wild animals can live wild, humans should not be part of it.

There are good rescues. But any sanctuary worth its salt does not allow the public to interact directly with the animals. That's why you can do tours at places like Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, but only in the same way that you can do tours at the zoo. Fantastic work!
I only want to add this, there are sanctuaries and rescues that may not be accredited, but are still good places. They are open to the public, or have specific public hours/days in order to fund the operation.
The key difference, and what you should ask about any zoo with exotic or dom of these places, is do they have personal interactions or experiences with domestic or exotic wildlife? If so, that should be a big red flag.
Petting zoos with domesticated animals (miniature horses, goats, cows, etc) are NOT the same, but should still be carefully looked at.
Irs possible that rescues and sanctuaries have different accreditation than zoos do. Regardless, I don't want to see decent places run by good people negatively impacted by the message. Given that many of those places depend on donations or admission fees in order to stay open.
Especially because at a glance, they could look similar to the roadside zoos. But it won't take much of a deeper look to find differences.
Because without the smaller rescues and sanctuaries, many of the animals in their care would be euthanized. As so many are former pets by people who love animals bur have no true concept of the specialized diet, veterinarian, and daily care they actually need before they buy them.
Wirh any luck, rhe Primate Protection Act beinf introduced by Senators Blumenthal and 2 of his colleagues will be passed like the Big Cat Act and private ownership of nonhuman primates will finally stop

If Dana’s story helps get these wild animals into better environments and spur stronger federal and state regulations around roadside zoos, great. My concern is uneducated Americans are going to overact and call for euthanasia of wild animals for being wild. Similar to when humans have contact with bears, mountain lions, and buffalo. The animals also lose due to human stupidity.

Elephants are EXTREMELY SMART AND REMEMBER EVERY DAYUM THING!!!!!! They can remember SPECIFIC people, incidents, good, bad, etc. First of all, how is this a sanctuary to when they are obviously still being told and made to do things that isn’t normal behavior to them?!?! Elephants don’t belong in anybody circus. The abuse they (and other animals) receive by trainers is ungodly. I’m just going to say it……anyone puts themselves in situations such as this and gets hurt or worse……oh well, that’s on you. Take the L and mosey on. Why would you look for empathy when you get hurt when you don’t give the same respect to an animal that is out of it’s true environment and FORCED to work long hours, endure abuse and live a life where people don’t care until they harm someone. I’m Team Elephant….period.
