I love the photo of the U2 on the lake ice with the wood and gut snowshoes in the foreground. High tech meets ancient tech!
I’m a retired history teacher but a little too young to have been around during this time. This is fascinating! Thank you for bringing this story into the mainstream! I love and appreciate your storytelling!! Thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
It is so cool to know this little piece of history. I've lived in Saskatchewan all my life, and didn't know about it. Thank you!
My old boss, Mel Hegland, was a kid in La Ronge, Saskatchewan when the U-2 went down on Wapawekka lake in 1960. Mel told me his dad was contracted to take a cat train from the town of LaRonge, across Lac La Ronge and the portage onto Wapawekka Lake to provide support and plow the ice runway. He went along with his Dad and saw the U-2 first hand. They were told they couldn’t take any pictures or talk about it to anyone. I was surprised when he reached into his pocket and pulled out some old photos of the U-2 on the ice. I guess they just couldn’t resist the moment.
@@allenbyl1259 I received the CBC interview with Mel from 1998 after I posted this. Quite the story!
@@CrosscutFilmsSask Please do a sequel to this excellent video and include that entire interview!! Please!! 🙏
Never heard of this U-2 near mishap before. BTW: Narrator Brian Elvenridge has the perfect narrator's voice.
I remember that crash. Canadians in Saskatchewan were pissed that the Americans flew over Canada without any notification.
Wasn't really a crash, and there was no news coverage of it at the time. Perhaps you're thinking of the B47 Stratojet crash near Big Sandy Lake in 1955? That was heavily covered by the media at the time. I have a video about that crash currently in production.
They notified ADC and ATC but such things wouldn't get down to the plebeians.
Nice video! Well done.
Worked up there for how many years , never heard of this . 👍🏼
My old back yard .... lots of great memories there fishing and bush camping with friends.
First-time visitor to your channel. Good script, good narration. Good music, too, but its tone made me think the entire video was the intro to a feature-length documentary... which i would watch :-)
@@athompso99 I appreciate the kind words! Most of my historical content is based in and around my home province of Saskatchewan, and as such, try to keep it based on the area. I'm always open to pursuing other stories that haven't been beaten to death (as in do we REALLY need ANOTHER Pearl Harbor video). I'm currently in pre-production of a short documentary about the B-47 Stratojet crash in Saskatchewan in 1955.
I appreciate you tuning in!
@CrosscutFilmsSask I really look forward to seeing that next documentary! I've heard about that one and have always wanted to visit the crash site and generally learn all about it.
Huh. Never heard about this, thank you for the video.
@@jimsvideos7201 Thanks for watching!
nice!
I understand the U_2 was an extremely difficult plane to land and needed a car to follow to guide it in . That pilot must have been extremely skilled to do it on his own . On a landing area without any markings to give him depth !
I thought Kevin Sorbo was the narrator...well done.
I guess this is the real story of the local folklore about the US Military showing off for a weekend of great Ice Fishing.
Wapaweeka sounds like something Moe from the Three Stooges would say
