How to Write a Novel - Stephen King and the "Little Red Thread"

  • From a series of interviews given by Stephen King on his writing process. King is not a “plotter.” He likes to start writing and see where the story leads him. And, as he says in the video, he is not a big believer in keeping story notes. I love his metaphor of the little red thread in the baseboard and reeling it in to find out what’s on the other side.
    If you’re a fan of King’s work (or have writing aspirations of your own), I highly recommend his autobiographical book “On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft.”
    Keep on pulling the thread...

    I'm not Stephen King. I'm not a professional author but when I try to write, I have a brilliant hook which is brilliant and everybody I show loves. And then it Peters out. It seems Stephen King has the complete opposite effect. Maybe that's why he makes the money and I don't 😂

      The really hard part is getting the rest of the story right yeah. It's why most new writers are way too paranoid about someone stealing their ideas. Ideas aren't the hard part, writing a good story from them is and no-one but you can write yours.
      But the takeaway there is that a good hook can be turned into many wildly different stories. Some great, some not so much.
      So your task is finding a way to turn your brilliant hook into an equally brilliant story, or at least an enjoyable one.
      It sounds like you may want to do a bit of outlining to develop a better idea of where you story is headed. So you can tweak the pacing and keep the excitement. Stephen King doesn't do that (on paper at least) but he's a very confident storyteller that forged that confidence from decades of rejection. He knows how *he* can tell a great story.
      You just have to find out what works for you. The only way to find out is by writing more. So keep on writing and learning. You're already great at coming up with great ideas apparently, so you're off to a great start as you'll have plenty of stories to learn from.

    The writer's notebook quote omg. I have a story idea from 2016 that I've decided to write into a novel now. In that first idea note, there was a police detective character, and how he mentioned that the people in town were staying indoors to avoid the ghost kids roaming the streets once every year. I've been having a block recently as I've been referencing that fact, and I realized that my current version of the story has the town as completely haunted, so there's no way there are any "normal people" in it. After all, the story is now about a kid who got lost and found himself in a ghost town. If there are normal people in that town who are just closing the blinds... it doesn't really work, does it? Wow, I can't believe it took until this video for me to just discard that idea because it wasn't good.

      @thehangingparsiple5692 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're not alone!!!
      I had the 'brilliant' idea of a detective who'd left the police and moved away but became embroiled in a spate of murders. I had him interrogating people and everything before I remembered he was no longer a detective.
      I mean, it's salvageable I suppose, but the reason he left is a big part of the sub plot. Dohhhhh

    • @Definingpersonality
      @Definingpersonality 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In order to make a story, you must first know the key components that make up every story.
      Genre- establish what kind of story you want it to be. Action adventure, horror, fantasy, syfi, etc.
      Plot- establish what is going to happen from beginning middle to end.
      Setting- establish where and when your story takes place.
      Main character- establish who is the main character of your story and why.
      Supporting characters - establish who are the supporting characters and why they play an important role in helping the main character.
      Main conflict- establish who or what is the main villain/conflict and way.
      Resolution- wrap it all up with an open or closed ending.
      More in-depth process
      Story Primise- Give a brief 2 to 4 sentence description of what's going to happen in your overall story.
      Story Summary- Describe in further detail what's going happen in your story. This is where you include more details such as people's names, places and events.
      Story Outline- Here you'll write out each chapter in as much detail as you can imagine.
      Revisions- once everything has be completed go back and write it again to catch potential mistakes such as misspellings, plot holes, grammer issues etc.
      Hope this helps!!!

      @@Definingpersonality well thats the problem i already know and my mind turns any idea i have into a reductionism of "thats been done before" or whatever you know? Where is the line of something obviously having to have been done before vs unoriginality? Like a story about humans in a skyscraper having a shootout vs also a guy inna vent with a lighter like that would just be die hard and if its not its still too close to die hard to even make it. So at what point did it become too close to die hard or one of the other billions of stories that have been written. Bc i get to the point where if it has any more than a beginning middle and end i start second guessing the originality. Not even necessarily as plagiarism just "they did this theme better" or something. I wish i knew less about the story what makes a story so i could be free to write a good premise essentially then take it from there. My mind is like "we need an inciting incident" instead of "a wizard and a balrog fell out of the sky into a lake"

    • @Definingpersonality
      @Definingpersonality 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      My approach is to sit down and relax. Try not to overthink. Allow your creativity to flow at its own pace. NOTHING in the artistic world is 100% original or 100% unoriginal. If you are a creative individual, you'll be able to convert rocks into diamonds over time. If you can't, then that may just mean you're in the wrong area of creativity. I thought I wanted to do animation going into college, but I quickly released after doing it that it wasn't for me. However, I still had a creative spark in me that eventually led me to comic book/ graphic noval art. I'm not saying this is you. I just wanted to give you another perspective, but if you feel that's your area, then keep grinding!!! Also, keep watching videos and reading books on how writers made their content.
