I understand the downsides (upgrade requires selling one drive and one drive failure killing data on the entire array), but do you mean that those drives are already so fast that the gain from RAID 0 is just pointless for gaming? Because honestly on my Scar 16 4090 with RAID 0 I havent’t seen Windows or games loading particularly fast, it just felt normal (like on Legion 5 Pro I have for comparison, but I haven’t compared side by side).
@urulooke Yep, you're absolutely right. NVME drives are so fast now that there is literally zero point/benefit of putting them in raid 0 for gaming purposes.
Thats the Laptop I kept. It has a great performance. I have the RTX4080, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB SSD (2x 2TB Raid0) config and I love it. Should be Future proof for at last 4 years with highest settings. Paid only 3099€ including taxes with the complete asus bundle ROG Fusion II 300 Headset (>100€), ROG Gladius III Mouse (>60€), ROG Backpack and the smaller 100 Watt USB-C Charger (80€) for office use and a huge mousepad worth 40€. Best bang for the buck! Sold some equipment for 200€ and love the laptop.
This laptop after months of testing really needs faster RAM, the stock 4800mhz on my Asus SCAR 16 4090 had the worst 1% lows in many games I had ever seen in pretty much any system i had ever built or purchased previously. I was thinking it was BIOS related, Nvidia drivers, simple chipset drivers etc. Went from BIOS 306 all the way through BIOS 314 before I got curious and bought a kit of Crucial DDR5-5600 (which only runs at 5200 for now until there's further BIOS updates) and such a tremendous improvement in my frametime consistency. I am amazed at how no one is really calling this out, because the stock RAM is atrocious and severely bottle necking this system. If you're seeing massive frame stutters/momentary massive frame drops and you're using one of these laptops in games like Jedi Survivor, Hogwarts Legacy, Dead space, etc grab this (CT2K32G56C46S5) and upgrade, and enjoy the proper consistency in frametime performance these laptops should be getting. I honestly wish I recorded the various games I tested because the difference is literally night/day. Like i said no one is really discussing this much on forums/reddit or youtube, I just got curious and decided to try a small upgrade to see if the faster speeds would make a difference and sure enough there is a huge enough difference between the stock Hynix 4800mhz kit that came with my laptop and the Crucial RAM that replaced it.

@@ooof5281 the RAM i have is dual rank which all current gen laptops are either limited to 5600 single rank or 5200 mhz dual rank. Dual rank is superior and helps cut down on latency by utilizing interleaving between the dual rank modules on both sides of the RAM, i highly suggest everyone does some research prior to RAM purchases, it's not as simple as raw speeds believe it or not. I personally do not care for over all raw speed. the speed bump to 5200mhz is more than sufficient for my use case and has greatly cut down on the frametime stutter/incosnistency, I've tested other machines liek the Aorus 17x with single rank 5600 and there's less micro stutter on the SCAR 16 with upgraded dual rank 5200mhz RAM vs single rank 5600mhz RAM. I don't post content because I simply don't have the time nor can I offer the production value for quality content to youtubers. But i've spoken to others who've verified the same results I have. Asus will not enable dual rank above 5200mhz I believe, nor will any other vendor, its just pick what you want, single rank 5600 or dual rank 5200mhz. Hope that helps

I just got one of this last week from Newegg. The usb ports are busted, the usb disconnecting on it's own constantly when I play games, don't know if it's the motherboard or something. Already returned it and waiting for the replacement, really like the design.
The latest bios 307 allows full functionality in throttle stop. I’ve got a stable -140mV undervolt and all the other options are tweakable. Looks like you are running 306 or 305

I'd love to see you compare the scar 16 to the lenovo legion 9i. Extremely similar laptops, but the legion is about $1k more. It has a better resolution with a mini led panel and 1080p webcam instead of the 720p on the scar. Everything else is very similar.
9i is the worst value honestly, if you care about the 1k$ just get the miniled scar 16 with 4080/4090 (4080 offers better value, costs much less while offering unnoticable difference to 4090)

I want to use DP over HDMI since my monitor only support's 2k 120hz over HDMI. is having the dedicated mini displayport of the m16 better than displayport over type c?
Battery in this laptop is only useful to unplug it in one room and go to another room plug it in there, without rebooting. I’m spoiled by macbook air M1 and macbook pro M1 pro - with „all day” battery life and not loosing power when running on battery. Responding half jokingly, but honestly I saw battery going down really quickly on Scar 16 4090 even just on desktop/youtube, but I haven’t measured it or tweaked it (not sure if I had screen refresh rate reduced, if I had the right optimus settings, etc.)

Ex-owner of Scar 16 4090 here - for 4090 175W it has perfectly adequate cooling with 3 strong fans, liquid metal, many heatpipes and cooling fins along the back and sides heatsinks. It's loud as a freaking jet engine and the airflow is actually impressive, so it's enough to cool it down even to relatively low temps while gaming, because of 175 W power limit. If real overclocking was still a thing and you could power this chip with 200W+ (it's the same chip as in 4080 desktop card where it runs at over 300W), then 18" models would probably have an edge over 16" models (assuming they have more fins at the back, I doubt they have more powerful fans). Next year we'll probably see the exact same chip with a bit higher power limit sold as 4090 Ti and maybe then 18" will have a small edge 😕
Btw. Mini LED screen is fantastic and this pretty much eliminates the backlight bleed problem (I'm sensitive to this kind of flaws, but you should weight it for yourself), so that's a big + for 16" for me. Plus portability in a regular backpack - Scar 16 is actually pretty good size and weight. Is there GPU max power draw limiter in Nvidia driver panel or Bios. If i set it to long render in Linux Blender, like 20+ hours, i don't want the noise and premature death of GPU.
Normal.. this happens with desktop CPU's as well. My Ryzen 7600x will hit 75-78c when loading a game and then settle around 55-64c in-game. What you should be looking for is per core peak temps. Every core should be within 3-5c of each of other. If you have one core running 20c higher than others, consider a repaste. My temps hit 96-97c, but in-game temps are within spec, usually sub 80c, depending on the game. Is it throttling? yes, initially, but as long as the in-game performance doesn't throttle, long term you should be fine. Sustained thermal throttling is an issue, this is not that.

Any idea by how much the Scar 16 4090 will outperform the 4080 version? Where I am, 4090 version is 20% expensive than the 4080 one. The 4080 with just 16GB RAM and 1 TBB SSD is $3500 here and that extra 20% for the 4090 will hurt even more.
It's marginal, the leap between 4070 and 4080 is huge, the 4080 to 4090 leap in performance is more like 5-10%, total overkill unless you have excess budget
i have this pc with max specs and i have sometimes the issue that when opening a game the nvidia GPU will stay in power saving while the Intel GPU will try to handle ... anyone knows how to fix this issue?

@@XXun4ya I returned it. It was not the only problem. It also had another issue where it would occasionally boot to black screen when connected to power and I had to power cycle it and unplug just for boot. Also this laptop was ridiculously loud on both performance and turbo mode. I was hoping performance would be a bit more "balanced", because what's the point of having performance and turbo modes be almost equally loud - IMHO performance should be sitting somewhere mid-way between quiet and turbo (I think Lenovo does this better with "balanced" mode based)

Max fans, unless specified I was on turbo mode. I usually test hogwarts on a different fan profiles

Normal.. this happens with desktop CPU's as well. My Ryzen 7600x will hit 75-78c when loading a game and then settle around 55-64c in-game. What you should be looking for is per core peak temps. Every core should be within 3-5c of each of other. If you have one core running 20c higher than others, consider a repaste. My temps hit 96-97c, but in-game temps are within spec, usually sub 80c, depending on the game. Is it throttling? yes, initially, but as long as the in-game performance doesn't throttle, long term you should be fine. Sustained thermal throttling is an issue, this is not that.

Dear Gizmo, is it true that only the scar 16 with rtx 4080 has a mini led panel? And the 4090 just the ips panel? The shops in the Netherlands show this difference in specs between the 4080 and 4090.

@@Dennis-ih8nx no there isnt. even the website doesnt show one. when you go to the page it changes it to a 4080. either its something wrong with asus website or its not one at the moment. the m16 however has one so it doesnt make any sense why there wouldnt be one for the strix scar I agree

Any idea by how much the Scar 16 4090 will outperform the 4080 version? Where I am, 4090 version is 20% expensive than the 4080 one. The 4080 with just 16GB RAM and 1 TBB SSD is $3500 here and that extra 20% for the 4090 will hurt even more.
It's marginal, the leap between 4070 and 4080 is huge, the 4080 to 4090 leap in performance is more like 5-10%, total overkill unless you have excess budget

Love your reviews, but is not objetive to compare without RTX 4090 vs Scar and similar laptops. And now, almost here in Spain Can buy for 3.850e-4.100e.

@@urulooke not good. Try using it for 2 weeks max if your return policy allows it. May or may not go away, if you still have it
@@XXun4ya I returned it. It was not the only problem. It also had another issue where it would occasionally boot to black screen when connected to power and I had to power cycle it and unplug just for boot.
Also this laptop was ridiculously loud on both performance and turbo mode. I was hoping performance would be a bit more "balanced", because what's the point of having performance and turbo modes be almost equally loud - IMHO performance should be sitting somewhere mid-way between quiet and turbo (I think Lenovo does this better with "balanced" mode based)

with this price just saying had to have at least 1080p webcam shouldn't be too expensive to have that on 3000$ + laptop almost 4000$ and you don't even have 1080p webcam is stupid and very expensive in my opinion im sure some will disagree since you might be don't buy it for streaming or chatting and face cam with people in group chat like skype and are such like that but i think there will be a people that will also agree with me about it today you pay more than you actually need to but oh well some other countries may have higher price for this laptops cuz of their greediness for money but oh well good that the usa still have somewhat reasonable price compared to europe and other region and countries
