- A sinkhole appears on the Ida Peak road from a collapsed mine that causes the road to be closed for months. I decided to climb into and check it out. Then we explore a few other awesome mines in the area and run low on oxygen...…..

You zeroed the sensor in a toxic environment!
To ZeroCalibrate you must Move to a normal atmosphere (20.9% v/v O2) that is free of hazardous gas.
Do this properly! Be safe.
Yeah I guess but I doubt the oxyger was very low it wouldn't make much difference.
@@exploringabandonedmines yup, I'd agree with that. It's very low 13ppm, very far from knockdown levels.
13 is the months left on the monitor. It is a 24 month monitor and it counts down how many months it has left.

You really should invest in a newer more functional monitor. The one you have only measured the oxygen level but there are a lot of gases that can kill you in lower concentrations.

You should get into the practice of zeroing your air sensor outside the mine.
Never zero your sensor when it's going off, that will reset the sensor to the already low oxygen level. This can make for a dangerous situation.

Since trees generally grow straight up and the slope was not far off from the trees then I would say the slope is steeper than most people would ski down.
I can tell from the sound of your oxygen meter that you're using the yellow one from BW Technologies... I had the same issue with mine being overly sensitive and it becomes frustrating because it simply alerts at 19.5% and you're left wondering if it is 19.4% (and therefore still safe) or if it is a more dangerous level that you should pay attention to. I found that I ended up just ignoring it and paying attention to my symptoms, which kind of defeats the purpose of the oxygen monitor. The solution I hit upon was to buy an oxygen meter that shows the actual percentage of oxygen in the air. So, now I know if I'm dealing with 19.4% and I can proceed without concern or if I'm down at like 12% or something and need to get the hell out of there.
What kind are you using now?
Had the same problem as you but waiting until you're symptomatic of low oxygen? Yikes! Levels can change too fast for that. Glad you bought one that shows the actual reading. The BW Technologies one sucks for that reason.
At around 19:00 mins in the water looks so pure and clean. This sure is amazing to watch but I could never go in there. You all are so brave! Thank you for sharing your journey 🙂

October is Halloween month in the US. There is a teeny, tiny, part of me, that always wants to hide out in a mine and scare the shit out of someone. Jump out and growl like a demon.
/With my luck the dude would be carrying a shotgun and shoot me down like Bill Murray in Zombieland.
I guess I can add "demons" to the list of reasons I carry a rifle while exploring mines!

I live in WV and our homes are caving in, roads have sunk 10ft and more. Most of WV is mined for Coal, infact my son's and husband are currently underground miners. Some larger coal companies have not secured old mines as residents were told would be done. Although, when mining under home residents are given a percentage of sales from mineral rights. Most have equaled more than the cost to replace failing foundations or home values. People choose to spend the money instead of saving for possible repairs from sinkholes. It's bad in this state!

You wouldn't find me leaving early I'd be down there faster than lightning and for the whole duration I used to go caving loads and been down some mines in the south west UK loved srt if I'm ever in Canada I will give you a shout keep up the good work Frank and stay safe! Kit tip I used to use a mini q40 diving torch as my back up very good torch great narrow beam on it I recommend getting one if I'm ever rich I will send you one you can get 2 types one with button or one twist the bessel to turn on and my headlight was called headlight it was orange and black with a 14hr lithium battery if i find it I will send a link over that light was epic I gave up as need a hip replacement waiting to get back to some crazy adventures at least I have your mad adventures to give me that fix I need ☺
It just occured to me that it would be EASIER to fill that hole then to block the road with those pieces of concrete......... Lol.

A backhoe could fill it in a day by itself just using the dirt on the bank... Even if the hole was WAY bigger then it actually was.

“Gly”: Hi Frank. O2 monitors require recalibration once a month in fresh clean air. Yours is different than mine but I’m sure they all have similar sensors.
I know with the SCOTT Multi Gas Meter it also comes with a canister of a Calibration Mix to recalibrate it. I don't see why just in a Clean O2 Environment they can't be recalibrated lol. When Governents are buying the companies sell em everything they can. If it's a normal "Alarm when it's 19% O2" then should be easy to recalibrate. Lol Google it up and see what they say, Good Vid Frank!!
A small drop in oxygen levels isn't going to be a problem it doesn't need to be that accurate.

“Gly”: Your right Frank. When mine goes off it shows you the percentage. My alarm set point is 19.5% but if your just in a horizontal adit you can still keep going until it gets down to 15%. I wouldn’t push it much past that especially if you were in a strenuous situation like climbing ropes or ladders because you might start to see stars.

Frank - you only should zero the sensor outside in fresh air, otherwise it may not alarm when you really need it to since that goofs up the calibration. With all the rotten timbers, hydrogen sulfide was likely displacing oxygen in there. I am shopping for one myself and hope to find one which displays oxygen's actual percentage. There's one thing for sure all that loose rock would make great railway ballast (one of my other secret loves is railways especially industrial and narrow gauge). Some really sketchy ground in this video. You have balls of steel Frank and we all appreciate it. Stay safe!

A sink hole and your first though is to go down - okay I know you looked to find the safer option first. Beautiful scenic footage, such stunning views. Those first few adits were dicey, you went ahead and checked them out though. Frank the water looked crystal clear but way too cold and deep. The oxygen monitor proved to be very useful. 23:30 Your BW Clip was chirping once per second, which means hydrogen sulphide levels had exceeded 12ppm (in your case it displayed 13ppm). You will hear two chirps per second when H2S exceeds 17ppm.

No the 13 means it has 13 months left it is a 24 month disposable single gas monitor. I doesn't measure h2s.
His model beeps when oxygen drops below 19.5 %.

We rented a pump to pump out a mine.......it ran all day and the water never went down!

I know, right? He explains it as if everyone who happens upon a sinkhole thinks, "Oh man...wonder what's down there? Wish I could get in." I can honestly say that had never crossed my mind when encountering sinkholes, until I started watching EAM. Perhaps I fear being swallowed up by the muddy sucking of unstable earth. I am fascinated by underground exploration, tho. I can simultaneously skirt fears & sate curiosity by watching Frank's rabbit hole adventures!

the easiest way it to just lower a camera in there.. THAT is the safer way.. once you see if it is part of a mine then you might go in.. Well there was five minutes of excitement shot to hell.. Off to the woods! I know you will find a cool hole to climb in.. I think your part Canadian hobbit.. or maybe one of those great white north dwarfs that are so famous in the mine country.. Awesome videos Frank, I used to survey sewers for a while in the early eighties and we used a lamp to detect explosive gas which also had some litmus paper attached that we coated with something, cant remember what, but we also had some electronic device i think it was called "neotronics" and that was a gas detector, anyway as a young man back then some of the post Victorian deep massive sewers were pretty scary lol... your a brave man Frank, All the best mate
PS. We also had a plastic hood attached to a small oxygen supply, so you had some air to get out if needed. ahh the scary memories, we did get danger money while down there, not much though.
It would have never occured to me that I could go down into a sink hole. But then, I don't have suicidal thoughts to often either. Your a brave soul frank. Or do you ever think of what could happen if the sides of a hole should decide to give way and fill in the hole around you? You should get a long extension pole to put your camera on and take a peek before you commit to danger. Be safe, you would be missed by all of us.
it certainly was something I considered carefully before going down...the sides seemed stable enough.

If you ever get the chance to come back here to Idaho and explore, I suggest and would love to see the inside of the old Gilmore main mine. I know there are two old water pumps and a tone of old equipment down there. the mine was closed when one of the pumps failed, forcing the miners to flee from the mine leaving everything behind. Making the main mine is is a huge time capsule. If you do decide to go you'll need climbing gear and a tun of rope this mine is huge and goes strait down.
Anyway, keep up get grate videos and hope to see more from you in the future. Your videos are always amazing and fun to watch.

Just fyi when you zero most sensors like that its supposed to be in clean air cause it thinks the partially bad air is good. Depending the model that might have levels first beeps means good to work in the environment for 7 hours second is an hour then final means get out fast
Hi there, would you go back there at a different time and try it again? Would you ever help keep the water more free flowing by helping to improve the drainage channel at all. Seems like it would help preserve the mine a bit more by preventing the water from backing up and the buildup of more bad air.
shame about the bad air, looked good further in, looked better than some I've seen you in Frank in regards to rotting timbers and moisture etc but maybe you should consult an air or oxygen monitor manufacturer for advice on its limits or even if it has a further more critical alarm as the limit for one to travel safely before its dangerous to you.
If I had a better alarm it would tell me what exactly the level was that would be helpful.
