    what a brilliant transcription. always loved this album, interesting to see the chords noted, they always sounded so mysterious to me

      Thanks! Yeah, I agree. The closed position voicings in particular were a bit of a revelation for me. I think a lot of pianists would tell you to stay away from those and use a drop voicing, but they sound really nice on the guitar. Thoroughly underrated in my opinion.

      @@tedpeate32 The only reason people would say that for guitarists closed position chords are harder because they're literally harder to grab- maybe impossible (if just your left hand) depending on the inversion. For example first position closed major 7th chords work great on really on any of the three adjacent four string sets on the guitar, and from what i remember you (or barney) use them in the context of a maj7 and min7 voicings in this video. With one hand on the neck and right hand on the neck as well, you can hit any 4-5 note closed voicing- see Joe Cohn), besides that knowing as many kinds of voicings under your fingers as you can only helps you and your understanding of the neck. Really to have the ability to freely and play filled out behind someone while comping on he guitar is really not that different than doing it on keys, main thing being i think it's much harder to have all these techniques down on the guitar. That being said you want the ability to play the all these cadences and in all the keys so your mentally freed. And going between full 4-5 note voicings, 3rd runs, and even some single not lines behind- all add up to a very free dynamic backing for a singer or soloist. Long story short these all of these together add up to a lifetime of practice

    Is that a barney kessel signature telecaster?

      No. Did he ever have one, I know only of the Gibson?

      @@tedpeate32 i was making a joke. I can't imagine him playing any guitar that wasn't enormous with one pickup and gauge a zillion strings. he was definitely old school.

      @tedpeate32  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ah, got you! There are some pictures out there of Barney playing a tele, but I'm certainly not scoring any points for authenticity with my choice of instrument here :)

      @tedpeate32 hey man. No law says you have to play a gibson monster jazz guitar. I wont go bigger than my es175. Any bigger than that is too much for me. Its a more sensible size than the L5 or groetch battle cruisers

      For sure, plenty of great jazz guitarists play teles (Bickert, Greene, Lage, Frisell etc). To be honest though the reason I play this has less to do with any of them than it does Joe Strummer, Bruce Springsteen and Brian Fallon. I really wasn't into jazz four years ago.
