Neat. How do you make tools?
Also, refined oil seems stupidly profitable. I assume it’s related, at least in part, to the difficulty in getting to the oil well and oil refinery?

@@magiccarpetmadeofsteel4564 Tools are made at the Ironworks, where you deliver Coal, Raw Iron and Lumber. And Refined oil fetches a pretty penny because it is a sought after commodity.
Now, if the game were to implement usage of the refined oil for maintenance of the cranes in places like the Ironworks, Smelters, sawmill and logging camp, those industries would be paying a pretty penny for that to keep their machines goin

The telegraph offices are not transporters, but a way to check on other workers on the railroad. It's like having multiple people working at different locations that you can control. "Hyce is at the sawmill. Let's go see what Frank is doing at the smelter."

25:20 , Hyce's Coal Shortage Nightmare, "Throw ANYTHING on the fire" - I read somewhere that the engines on WWII ships could run on the used cooking grease from the galley. Basically, if it's liquid enough and can burn, they'll use it. Someone described Bunker C, AKA No. 6 Fuel Oil, as "just barely above asphalt."

Another cheat I figured out: you can use the telegraph stations while rerailing equipment. Use the rerail tool to pick up a car or engine, teleport to another location, and you can then place it on the track there.

Had no idea how much influence the grade was going to have, and it was going really really slow. I actually dropped my caboose when I was almost at the top, cause it felt like I wasn't going to make it. At the top of the hill I wanted to stop so I could ride the caboose back down to the yard. Question for professor Hyce: What type of wood would be used in a wood burner? Would it be oak(30 million btu per cord), bodark (32 million btu per cord), or locus (28 million btu per cord), the three highest btu per cord woods. Or would it be just local wood?
Edit: thank you everyone for the answer

    • @TheWiseGuyzz
      @TheWiseGuyzz ปีที่แล้ว +27

It generally was local wood. Often railroads would pay landowners to stack cords of wood near the line for the crews to use. Of course higher quality wood was better, but quantity has a quality all its own haha.

    • @explosivo666
      @explosivo666 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Not Hyce, but it depends on the line, what is available, and the time period. Typically wood would be locally sourced as you would burn a ton of it. Not uncommon to have wood stops ever 30 miles to refuel, dependant on the line / engine /gauge.

As to industries switching industries, the power plant I worked at kinda did dual-function in that department. When coal unit trains came through, they rode a loop around the coal pile for unloading. Meanwhile, the plant itself owned and operated at least 2 diesels (one of which I know for a fact used to be a UP diesel by livery) for switching cars of anhydrous ammonia and limestone that the plant made as byproducts of the coal burning and exhaust filtration to fit EPA guidelines

I really hope in the future that larger fills will cost more money, so that the player, especially in the early game, will be encouraged (or forced) to build tracks that more conform with the terrain, and as such, won't have perfect 2% lines, etc.

    • @captainchaos6628
      @captainchaos6628 ปีที่แล้ว +6

As long as the cost part can be opted out of. I enjoy the more sandboxy approach to this game. Games that start nickel and diming every little thing become boring and annoying IMO. If there's a happy medium then fine, but I don't want to spend $5000 in game dollars every time I build a half a mile of track or rebuild a section of track. The ability to build a section of track completely before "committing" (paying) would be acceptable, I'd go completely broke every time I layed track because I'm always deleting and relaying. But each unto their own.

Ahh, I know why that alternative coal was such a mess in your 491 at the museum! The coal you sourced had small amounts of Gilsonite mixed into it. Gilsonite is basically solidified crude oil, and is what the Uintah railroad was bringing down the mountain. When the mine was first found, they mistook it for coal and even tried to burn it in a steam locomotive… where it promptly melted in the firebox and plugged the flues and tubes as well as making a muck mess in the ash pan. It took a year to get the locomotive running properly again. “Greasy” coal is a seam of coal that also has bits of Gilsonite mixed in, meaning when the coal formed it was full of animals that got pressed into oil as the plant material was pressed into coal-which is what they’ve found in the lake at the base of Mt. Saint Helens where the needles, leaves, and bark of the trees blown in by the eruption have already turned into coal and the trunks have petrified vertically in the lake as well as fish caught in the disaster having already been fossilized or even turned into oil pockets (from pressure in the new coal seam) that occasionally bubbles up from the lakebed. It’s pretty incredible.

I remember this cartoon when I was young and there was no fireman and only an engineer. Well anyway he ran out of coal and started paying the passenger to give him anything that burned. Including the passenger cars walls and roof.

  • @williamadams7865

Running out of coal: I remember reading in Narrow Gauge Memories (in South Australia) of a train crew using Leigh Creek brown coal in the firebox of their T class engine. Leigh Creek coal has been described as “dirt that burns”. Anyway, the coal was not burning well and in desperation, the train crew stopped at every stack of old sleepers on the side of the track and loaded them on to the engine to limp on home.
This was prior to the 1957 opening of replacement standard gauge line to the Leigh Creek coal field, the coal being used for power generation until 2017.

As hyce said most oil burners use heated bunker C in an oil burner, some locomotives in preservation use that, some such as grand canyon and US Sugar use recycled cooking oil. A lot of the hobby sized locomotives will use diesel or kerosene. The park trains built by Merrick light Equipment company do use an electric automotive diesel fuel pump to provide a consistent pressure as you run the tank down.

@26:30 There are a few cases, especially on the SP mountain divisions where the oil tanks on the steam engine tenders were pressurized with Aux. compressed air to as much as 10 psi to maintain proper oil fuel flow on steep up-hill grades, where the loss in fuel head pressure might affect performance. If you ever stop by the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento California, you can take a look at the tender of Cab-Forward 4294 and see the ways that the tender was configured to be pressurized.

sounds like bad Creosoting buildup from that coal. this can be countered by feeding sand into the Firebox and letting the Draft carry the sand through to tubes and fluepipes to clear the soot and Creosote.
I don't suggest doing this near buildings or over passengers as you'll throw a HUGE cloud of Black Doom out the stack!
getting drivers out of synch is usually a sign of big problems that often results in Hair, Teeth & Eyeballs spread along the Right of Way followed shortly thereafter by a good chunk of your Train!

Not stealing coal, but I've read a story where the crew were extremely low on water. They pulled up to the water tower but there was a loco already under the tower. They noticed the loco was finished filling up so the driver sent the fireman to ask the other driver to move forward.
The driver under the tower was being an a-hole (as these types seem to creep in the railway industry) and refused. So the driver said 'watch this' to the fireman and they couple up and shoved the other loco out the way - the other driver was obviously upset but they told him off.

Over in the UK we are having some problems with coal and coal acquisition, since the war in Ukraine since most of our coal came from either Russia or Ukraine. Once upon a time we'd get some good old Welsh coal which was damn good stuff, but well...over time it was cheaper to import and then, of course, there was Madam Thatcher... There is some experimenting going on with substitute fuels, things like compressed Rapeseed oil, and anthracite ovoids, as well as imports from Colombia, although our extremely dry summer which meant that nearly every (if not all) preserved steam railways in the UK went to diesel running means that a lot of the trials are only just really getting under way, so time will tell.

I don’t know very much but I don’t think you could have each side on a locomotive move independently in some situations like without needing a push or unless the other side is timed good enough because think of it like a bike if the peddles are straight up and down or in the locomotives case the drive rods being backwards or forwards without momentum it’s stuck so I think locomotives drive rods are set up how they are to prevent that from happening because if the right wheel connection point is at 3 on a clock then I think the left should be at 6 on a clock so the pistons and running gear never get stuck

    (TL;DR at end)
    Random info about myself
I have been in control of a train when It ran out of coal,
I volunteered as a fireman but had qualifications to drive certain steamies
This one day during the railway briefing we are told to steam up ALL steam engines for a ceremony at the end of the line
    Shit failed immediately
W934 had a leak in one of her pipes and was taken out of service
W22 had to be dead hauled by a diesel due to a similar issue
I and another person were assigned SM1 'the coffee pot'
If you've seen a picture of her you'd know she is tiny as hell and we only ran her as far as woolshed flats in revenue service
I've steamed up the engine (again she is small so it took no time at all) and the boss says that I'd have to run SM1 by myself as far as Stirling North as the driver felt very weak and could not drive due to the risk of his health (I was quite literally the youngest as most other volunteers were in their late 60s)
No problem i thought I'll just stock up on coal and she'll be right
    Wrong
At woolshed flats there is a coal reserve for SM1 but it wasn't stocked up which I'd discover when I got there
I looked at the coal and she was very much stocked for a full trip but I forgot the hills
Woolshed flats is halfway down the line in the heart of the Flinders Ranges and it's mostly down hill from Quorn to woolshed but it climbed to pass over a bridge very quickly using up alot of coal and about 2km away from woolshed I had to dump the fire due to me running out of coal
"Well shit" I said and sent the guard down the line to warn NM25 who was running behind due to steaming issues (again shit failed that day) and ask the driver to give us a push to Stirling north which he did
TL;DR I suck at guessing how much coal I need to climb a grade
    Additional notes
here is a link to a photo of said engine in 1906 commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SAR_Steam_Motor_Coach_no_1,_1906_(SLSA_B_27771).jpg

*out of coal*..WHY am I having visions of the (somewhat silly) RR film "It Happened to Jane" where they run a New Haven 2-8-2 out of fuel as a plot point in the movie

im curious, how many more pre-recorded vids are left before the snow update, cuz i believe that the glenbrook was one of the engines that got a speed buff and a couple engines got their tractive effort adjusted(which im sure you are already aware of)

I'm somewhat surprised that the engines at the CoRM still burn coal. I would have expected that they would have been switched to a modern alternative fuel, like charcoal briquettes or something along those lines.

The talk about "it burned coal" versus" it burned wood" would there be anything stopping a crew from hucking a few logs into an engine that otherwise runs on coal?

    about the Telegraph-Posts
How about you change nothing to it?
Its a feature and you can chose to ignore it if you dont like it.
But dont force addiction of inconvinience on others.
I love the telegraph offices. I mostly play by myself and it helps a lot.
Don't force me to do the whole savegame editing all the time to place telegraphs....
If it costs 100, 1000, 10000 bucks doesn't really matter.
I will just spawn 100, 1000 or a million bucks with a handy savegame editor and spawn them out of thin air.... all you do is just force me to do an extra step.
i'm glad the game got rid of the cost of tree removal...
(edited some typos out... was typing on my phone at work the first time ;) )

I do like running the 0-6-0. Has a decent amount of tractive effort for its size. Out of curiosity, does Montezuma have a compressor? I’m curious since you never have it on, but also have no brakes. The 2-8-0 brakes work with the compressor on

Im kind of taki g a break from railroads online. I'm waiting on a fried to get the game so we can work together. Also I got the climax and when to push 5 cars of planks plus a caboose up a 6.5 degree grade and it just screeched to a halt so I had to go get the eureka and I pushed the train up the grade with no problem. Keep in mind I was pushing everything with the climax not pulling
