just before |black friday" i ordered 2 Dots as they had a special going on Amazon.. whilst trying to learn the dot, i came across your video and ordered a single switch (again, from Amazon) for around $9 per switch....... I have since added 4 more Gen 2's and 2 Gen 3 echos to my home as well as almost a dozen (yes, 11 so far) of the Sonoff switches.. they now take me less than 5 mins to wire up, program and name the device It will control .. everything is very easy to do.. so much so that its has quickly become second nature for myself and grandson to use the switches in conjunction with the echo dots, Thank you for making an excellent video on this subject..
Great video. Keep up your research and video updates. My house is slowly getting automated despite my wife's objections. However she has recently commented that the level of convenience is very pleasing.
Thanks! That's so funny, a friend of mine who is also into home automation was just saying the same thing. We talked about how our wives were reluctant at first, but now realize the convenience is worth it. Thanks for watching!
easy to use, I started with one IR sensor and my Palm T5 with NoviiRemote IR installed inside, all the codes and buttons were made by your own time and criativity, golden times when we had no internet at all :)
I hope Sonoff gives you some decent funding because your videos have convinced me to buy two of their products... I assume I’m not the only one. Keep up the good work
I love all things Sonoff. I own more than 10 of these devices. Of course all of them were for secondary development, except for one, which I gave my dad. ;)
From a Sonoff review on Amazon: Issue: The Sonoff switch reports into eWeLink in China where it apparently resides for control, then Alexa must talk to the China APP to perform. When the Sonoff switch goes offline I now figure it has something to do with China. Not real keen on my home automation talking to China so much. Amazon Alexa needs to figure out how to use these smart devices direct to Alexa without the going to China software. Potential Solution: You can flash it with custom firmware to not be on eWeLink but you you need a Smart hub, ie SmartThings to control them over your network. Alexa then ties into SmartThings. Works rather well and stable. Please consider making a video to describe flashing Sonoff firmware to not be on eWeLink. Thank you in advance.
If the power supply or electric power outage then when then utility comes back then will it connects automatically and will work as per settings we have set before or it will lose all the schedule etc and need to be set again?
Thanks for the feedback! I'm planning on doing this project as soon as I find the time. It's near the top of my list, should be coming soon. Thanks for watching!
Your comment about metal appliances vs. plastic appliances, and how it relates to the ground wire is false. A perfect example of that is most toasters. I would simply stick with the rule that if the device you are trying to switch has a grounded plug, then you need the ground wire, and if it doesn't, then you don't. Also, you can buy two-prong extension cords to use with the Sonoff Basic, to eliminate someone plugging in a grounded plug into a non-grounded extension cord. Another option is to use a grounded extension cord, but don't cut the ground wire. Simply cut out a large enough section of the hot and neutral wires to fit in the Sonoff Basic.
The toaster thing is very odd in the US. In most other parts of the world a toaster MUST be grounded . in the US, it MUST NOT... But the US allows metal lamps with no ground and only single insulation too... 'class zero' appliances.
True, that is the easiest explination. the other indicator van be found on the device. most of the devices without a ground wire have a symbol on the with two squares in each other. that means double isolated. those appliances usually have no groud pin the connector.
The US has a poor standard when it comes to electric plugs and wires compare to the UK, where all plugs must be fused accordingly depending on the appliance. Plugs are strong and can be plug and unplugged with ease. They sit on the socket flat and do not go wonky under just gravity. I do not understand why the US chose such a puny plug system and worse the industry in general varies in standards from extreme to extreme. Even worse, many other countries have inherited the US standards. How safe is US$1.67 extension cord for 4 devices with no fuse and vey thing wire? (the one shown in the previous video)
Please do "what's inside these smart switches". A tear down video of explaining the internal electronics and working will be great. Can we build something like that at home, leave the assistant control part, but timer controlled and wifi controlled.
Great vid.. I was wondering if Sonoff makes a inching switch? I want to open garage door but the switch only needs to send a pulse for a secod to do that.
Is there any way to make a device turn on when receiving power? For example, my coffee machine. I would have liked my Barista to turn on when it starts receiving power, which I am afraid is impossible? How could one make an appliance turn on when it starts receiving power?
Can't wait for the next iteration with energy usage data monitoring and maybe even humidity and thermometer data monitoring for gardening purposes and just general curiosity.. basically cram as many low powered sensors as you can into the all in one plug in smart switch.
I have 4 sonoff but only one was le to pair the other doesn’t want to pair for some reason. I try everything but nothing works do u know how to fix this? Please let me be. Thanks
I think Vesync plugs are down to just over $7.00/each on Amazon. Not as flexible lacking Tesmota but workable without having to splice a power wire. Don't know if anyone knows if your insurance might have trouble if you're splicing power wires in your home or not? Good video though so thanks!
How do i set sonoff to switch on and off for 1 second i need a pulse output do they make any device that can be set for how long it comes on for when i trigger it
Will the control box fit into a J-box? (i want to control a pair of flood lights that are connected in one J-Box) and the way they are wired, I do not have a neutral at the switch that i could swap out for a wifi switch.)
Fast Question! are the components made of good quality in your personal opinion? Just wondering if I put these everywhere and there is some power issues... is the SonOff taking the hit and they burn? or is the braker of the house taking the hit?
Thanks! I bought their new POW R2, The PCB terminal block has "quick connect" snaps instead of screws - i got the wires in, but i am not really comfortable using quick connectors in 110v high amp usage. Can you comment on how these work- i don't want to break the plastic sliders on mine. I really like the positive feel of the old style screws! This video did not seem to cover this topic.
I am using the older POW model in this video. The quick connect style should be fine as long as there is some strain relief clamp on the extension cord itself. In other words, if you pull on the cord you want the plastic enclosure clamping down on the cord instead of relying on the quick connect.
Hi I am looking for a switch that can control a Rf thermostat controller for house ducted heater, the current remote needs to send a constant signal so that the heater knows it still had power and stays on, if the remote loses power the gas is switched off and heater stops.
Are any of Sonoff’s smart switches CSA certified or listed with UL? It would be very beneficial for them to hook up with either testing lab and have the products certified for safety.
Is there a smart switch that i can connect to my power supply box or geyser thermostat and control my hot water geyser with a timer too? Or did I answer myself
I love the Sonoff Basic because I can hide it inside the walls by making a hole in the switch box. I buy them on eBay and have had no problems ($5.50 free shipping)
What happens if I connect the live wire to the neutral screw, will it damage the device, would it still work ? reason for my question is that in my country the wall outlets dont have a standard for wiring like in the US, and it is posiible that I end up pluging to the wrong wire.
Just starting to look into home automation, this great information thanks! The button on the sonoff s20 plug, is that to turn the device that's plugged in on and off? Is it possible to program this button to do something else via another app? for example turn on and off something connected to a sonoff R3 switch or smart lightbulbs?
Hi i understand the use of this switch and its cool however my question is how many swithes would we need if i need to plug multiple items from one power switch Is there a sonoff power board which i can use through 1 powerr outlet nd has multiple power inputs
You can have multiple devices plugged into multiple Sonoff switches which can all be turned on at once or one by one through the smartphone app of a Sonoff control panel. Honestly the app is probably more fun where you can group any number of switches to be switched on at once. ;)
hi, I am looking at the sonoff for a new house I am building. Is it possible to use the smart switch and have it installed with the initial wiring of the house? therefor allowing me to keep it hidden within the wall? do you have another product that may be better for this purpose?
That's a great suggestion. I've thought about it. Upgrading to a current version of Marlin firmware is also a good options. There are safety checks in the firmware and will shut things down if necessary. Check out Thomas Sandladerer's video on the topic.
Hi . I have connected sonoff basic to my bedroom light. When I turn on the main switch .it is directly switching on the light. And in ewelink app the divice show offline. But still it is connected to wifi. Can you brief me about this issue
Excellent vids and content. My question is, how many of thede sonof devices do you need per electronic devices? Say a fan, tv, soundbar, lights, etc. Thanks in advance
How should a simple switch interact with an air conditioning? There's only 1 way: the TH16 measures temperature and compares the current temperature you want to have (at the point of the th16) like 22°C. If the measured temperature is higher your 22°C target the th16 gives power to your AC ... and if temperatures drops below 22°C it stops the power for the AC. There's just 1 input from you: target temperature And of cause it depends on where you put that th16. In front of the ac in the cold air flow it will stop a lot earlier than on the back of the AC or at 2m height.
With the Sonoff Basic WiFi Wireless Switch + IP66 are you recommending to use the cheap ext. cord not to cut into the original cord of the lamp coffee pot etc? secondly, with using the ext. cord are three (or more) receptacles would be consider the same "switch" correct? so if I say, " Okay google turn on my lamp?" Any and all items plugged into that modified ext. cord would essentially turn on correct?
You can certainly cut the cord of the appliance, I just choose to use an extension cord to give me the flexibility of plugging in various appliances without rewiring anything. You could plug more than one thing and have multiple things turn on, just make sure that the sum of the currents doesn't exceed the 10A rating of the sonoff
Regarding the ground wire, i have used the simple version of the sonoff, and i stipped the extention cord. i only cut the live and nutral wire. i dont cunt the ground wire. this by making sure that the sonoff fits in the gap between the cuts. then wiht a bit of fumbling it all fits in the casing and you connect the wires.
Is there any way I can get the switch just to pulse the output rather than latch? The reason is to switch on the A.C. by jumpering the on-board momentary switch
I know I'm late to seeing this video. I found you original video while looking for a way to add smart capability to a garage winch I use to open and close a loading hatch in the barn. I have yet to find a smart switch that can operate an up/down switch. Anyone seen one?
Nice technology but keep in mind that it is not approved for use in the USA or Canada (i.e. missing UL or CSA mark on the unit) and modifying an extension cord will void the certification of the cord. This is the main reason you can't buy it in stores. At the very least I recommend a dielectric test to make sure the insulation breakdown limit is safe and the plastic meets the flame test in North American standards. I plan to do a full evaluation once I get my unit to make sure it meets all the requirements.
@@AndyDramm the plastic badly fails the flame test; if the PC board overheats, arcs or sparks for any reason the plastic will propagate the flame instead of attenuating it. This result would not pass any standard either in Europe under CE or in North America under UL or CSA standards. To pass this test without changing the plastic you would have to install the device in a flame retardant enclosure or spray the inside with flame retardant paint. I hope this helps you. Best regards
Pierre Doucet thanks for the insight Pierre. I have a new found respect for the UL and CSA standards. They’re not just a bunch of bureaucratic regulations.
@@AndyDramm Glad to hear it; Some parts of regulations, codes, and standards are not always reasonable. The test engineers and inspectors have to interpret it correctly. Please connect with me on linkedin (linkedin.com/in/pierredoucet3). --- The SonOff enclosure did pass the dielectric test of 1200V and had a very small leakage current of 29 microamps (a PASS for that test), but a few components are not recognized (so its indeterminable in terms of failure mode and reliability). If you use a SonOff, please put it in an electrical box.
Can the sonoff th16 have one thing connected hardwired like heater and set up a temperature Scene and in addition use a sonoff smart switch and connect a humidifier and set your humidifier scene on and off.
hi love your vids i have a question can sonoff be controled locally or does it hve to connect to the application from the manufacturer can i build a server that controlles all of the sonoff switches off line wher i dont have to connect to the internet
Does anyone know if it's possible to connect a Sonoff device to power LED lights run entirely by two AA batteries alone? (2 x 1.5V AA's to be precise) as I have a few LED 'Twig' lights in the house that run on this set up and one of them can't be connected to a plug socket and it would be great to still set these up as 'smart'? Thanks.
Hi I’m a new viewer and loved the video! It was very informative. Just out of curiosity, do these require a sonoff hub? And does the sensor you used in the plastic casing, does that measure temperature and humidity? :)
The suggestion within the video to purchase directly from the manufacturer's website should be weighed since the cost of shipping makes the overall cost of the product more expensive than just getting it from Amazon. Also, the delivery time is significantly longer.
Dumb question but I'm at a loss: I have a heating/cooling system that plugs in with a NEMA 6-15 plug. From what I have read, this kind of plug has a live/live/ground configuration instead of the normal live/neutral/ground configuration. Would the box still support this if i simply swapped the neutral lines for the second live connection? I'm a developmental biologist, any voltage or amperage I ever come across at work is so small its not even noticeable so I'm a bit nervous about approaching this, but my apartment's HVAC system is killing my electric bill and has no thermostat control!!!
Phillip Necaise I have the same question! He answered someone below that it's fine with a 6-15 wire, but he was talking about the amperage... Let me know if you find anything out!
Question for you. I’m trying ontrol a linear actuator so I can just retract the actuator when turned off and then extend the actuator when turned off? I am trying to control a door to open and close. Can I use a relay and can I make it wireless with Alexa or Google? Thanks.
Usually low powered devices (such as radios, receivers, DVD players etc.) with a metal chassis may have two prongs only, because there's no danger of high voltage leakage like on high powered appliances.
pretty much an awesome vid. your enthusiasm, knowledge and general interest factor all 10/10. but im glad i dont live with you cause i think you will even automate my dog and the spiders in the cobwebs around the place...................................
I'm not plugging anything into my wall socket that lacks the "Underwriters Laboratories (UL)* certification. I like your products but have them interdependently tested!! Furthermore, Is Wi-Fi really the best communication protocol for devices? Pros: Higher Security aka encryption but another node on your network (point of attack), Bandwidth, Bi-Directional traffic (power usage & ON/OFF state), 2.4 GHz "range" would be acceptable. Cons: Increased network activity, 433 MHz would have better range (lower device security but it's kept off my actual network) it would also need a WiFi - 433 MHz hub. I'm not saying Wi-Fi isn't the way to go, I'm just asking for a consensus. I think Powerline (IEEE 1901) would be a good starting point, considering the ready availability of mains power. It has security (pairing) and it can go a damn impressive range albeit with lower signal strength "all it's doing is switching" Security is NEEDED in my opinion.. I don't want someone randomly switching on or off appliances throughout my house. PS. I really like my wired network setup how it is, my access points only serve the wireless devices they need to I don't really know. As for those people in the FAQ asking about the ground lead. Well just don't snip the ground wire and run it around the sonoff.
Hey bro, do they make one that will work with an AC unit that has a 240v 15a plug? I see the ranges on their website but I am a nub with this stuff and would like confirmation, thanks for you help!
Yeah, the sonoff POW is rated for 90V-250V AC and 16A. You need to make sure that your AC is single phase (like most other appliances in your house) or if it's 3 phase in which case this won't work.
byte sized To my understanding, the nema 6-15 has two live wires and no neutral. Does this not pose a problem for the sonoff which need a neutral input? Charles, let me know how this works out for you!
Are there any security concerns with this switch? Hacking into home automation has been on the increase recently and I don't wish to open my house to anyone to effect me or my family adversely. I appreciate any feedback you could offer.
just before |black friday" i ordered 2 Dots as they had a special going on Amazon.. whilst trying to learn the dot, i came across your video and ordered a single switch (again, from Amazon) for around $9 per switch....... Building my new smart home based on a playlist of tech. Your videos take up a large portion of my curriculum lol. Much respect and thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Very nice job. Looks like they have a deserving partner! Clear, concise and professionally done. Thanks.
Great video. Keep up your research and video updates. My house is slowly getting automated despite my wife's objections. However she has recently commented that the level of convenience is very pleasing.

I might do a video about flashing TASMOTA firmware. I haven't done it yet, but my brother in law has.
I would also be interested to see a video on how to flash it and tie it in to smart things.
Cutting the power cord is the fun part!!
Hi,nice videi I would like to connect the basic switch with thermometers via WiFi to turn on the pump for heating,do I need a hub,or how to do it ?
If the power supply or electric power outage then when then utility comes back then will it connects automatically and will work as per settings we have set before or it will lose all the schedule etc and need to be set again?
Great question
It has non-volatile memory and will save and restore the state before the power loss.
Just bought one its coming in a week thanks for the suggestion
I'm interested in you making a video on the dust collection system. Automatically starting when a saw comes on would be interesting.
Thanks for the feedback! I'm planning on doing this project as soon as I find the time. It's near the top of my list, should be coming soon. Thanks for watching!
Congrats on the sponsor man, love the channel
Thanks for watching!
wow that was cool keep them coming and I so happy I meet you to learn more things so when I get my house I would get it cool lol
Thanks. Been searching for good information
like this for a while, glad I found you!
Thanks for watching!
Can you make a video or explain how this can control a water heater? Should be installed at the main power panel of your house. Thank you.
Thank you for the detailed explaination.
Wish you the best If sonoff is smart they should hire you before someone else picks you up god bless you buddy best wishes thanks for the heads off
@byte sized
should be the Sonoff US face :)

This type of switch will only work with appliances that turn on when you plug in the power cord. That's essentially what the switch is doing inside.
Do any of these have tiered prices we can enter? Here we have different rates for times of the day.
I commend you! Your videos are very illustrative and educational. Keep the good work.
Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it!
Nice! I actually knew about Sonoff because of you. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for watching!
Oh man the device I'd love to create (with help) is a connected pool timer.
With power consumption reporting and all. That would be awesome
Awesome tip brother. Thank you.

Do they make a 3 phase switch that monitor usage, I have a 3 phase ducted air-con unit I would like to know its usage
Not that I know of.
I have been try to connect the sonoff with an ext cord as you suggest, but I can never get them tight.
Cover the leads with a thin coating of solder before inserting them into the screw lugs.
I want to control 28 light fixtures.. do these modules and software allow for that many separate ID's???

Regarding the ground wire,
i have used the simple version of the sonoff, and i stipped the extention cord. i only cut the live and nutral wire. i dont cunt the ground wire. this by making sure that the sonoff fits in the gap between the cuts. then wiht a bit of fumbling it all fits in the casing and you connect the wires.
Is there any way I can get the switch just to pulse the output rather than latch? The reason is to switch on the A.C. by jumpering the on-board momentary switch
Do they have dimmer and rgb controller also a blinds folder controller
does this use zigbee? do I have to get a hub separately?
The SonOff enclosure did pass the dielectric test of 1200V and had a very small leakage current of 29 microamps (a PASS for that test), but a few components are not recognized (so its indeterminable in terms of failure mode and reliability). If you use a SonOff, please put it in an electrical box.
I have a chicken coop door that runs on 4AA batteries. Is there a smart switch that I could make work with that Omlet Chicken Door)?
Got one for you, if I want to connect an AC (24 btu) or something with 20 amp. Do they have a product for that?
can you control the switch/appliances from the Internet, outside of your wifi ?
Brilliant, you answered all of my questions. Subbed.
Thank you so much for your video
Can the sonoff th16 have one thing connected hardwired like heater and set up a temperature Scene and in addition use a sonoff smart switch and connect a humidifier and set your humidifier scene on and off.
Do they make a home thermostat ?
Can you turn on a light if you are in another city with your phone ?
yes
Can i conect it with a lamp and use olso a switch for that lamp ?
hi love your vids i have a question can sonoff be controled locally or does it hve to connect to the application from the manufacturer can i build a server that controlles all of the sonoff switches off line wher i dont have to connect to the internet
I have been looking for a device similar but would like a smart switch that you wire in and out that is dimmable are these available anyware
Thanks.
is the sonoff wall plug always on and using stand by power? if yes, how much electricity consumption it uses?
I don't have a figure, but it would be a tiny amount probably on the order of mW.
Say, I have a lamp attached to the sonoff, what happens when the wifi is off, but power is on?
You should make a video making one of these smart switches dimmable
That would be cool! I don't know if they offer a dimmable version though. Thanks for the feedback!
Can it run both platforms apple and android at the same time? My wyfe has iphone an i android
I don't see why that would be a problem
Hi I’m a new viewer and loved the video!
It was very informative. Just out of curiosity, do these require a sonoff hub? And does the sensor you used in the plastic casing, does that measure temperature and humidity? :)
The suggestion within the video to purchase directly from the manufacturer's website should be weighed since the cost of shipping makes the overall cost of the product more expensive than just getting it from Amazon. Also, the delivery time is significantly longer.
Dumb question but I'm at a loss:
I have a heating/cooling system that plugs in with a NEMA 6-15 plug.
It sounds like that is 2 phase power. I think this is meant for single phase only.
Question for you. I’m trying ontrol a linear actuator so I can just retract the actuator when turned off and then extend the actuator when turned off? I am trying to control a door to open and close. Can I use a relay and can I make it wireless with Alexa or Google? Thanks.
Is the ewelink application safe? Does anyone know how to use this device by making your own software?
Good job!
My DENON Receiver has a metal chassis and the plug only has 2 prongs but it's polarized.
Thanks for the helpful feedback, and for watching!
Is it trustable brand? , as it is made in China. Is there any data theft or privacy issue? Please let me know the cyber security part.
Got any for DC ?
It has security (pairing) and it can go a damn impressive range albeit with lower signal strength "all it's doing is switching"
Security is NEEDED in my opinion.. I don't want someone randomly switching on or off appliances throughout my house.
PS. I really like my wired network setup how it is, my access points only serve the wireless devices they need to
I don't really know. As for those people in the FAQ asking about the ground lead. Well just don't snip the ground wire and run it around the sonoff.
I want to control 28 light fixtures.. do these modules and software allow for that many separate ID's???
what kind of LED grow-lights did you use?
Some I found on Amazon. I don't remember
Can you try to make your own nanoleaf Aurora, it will be really cool.
