- This is one of two LTD VIPERS that Phil uses regularly. You can see it on stage with him when he toured with Bon Jovi as well as numerous live videos and photos on stage with the DRILLS. This guitar has been on several recordings and is on of Phil's "go to" Axes. This Guitar is not for sale, we just thought you'd like to hear and see a less expensive guitar in the hands of the expert and through the Evil Robot C-30!! Enjoy!
it IS my pickup. it used to be a Gibson P94 and now it's a PX100 made by Arcane.

I like how you can see that this guitar is like an old pal to him and not just another million dollar museum piece that he's just playing for the camera.

There is something very satisfying hearing those licks with super dry tone. No hiding behind Large Hall reverb - I want to hear the strings squeal!
I have always loved this video. It was fun to revisit it.
This guy has bucket loads of talent and was well impressed when seeing him play with Bon Jovi at the Isle of Wight festival, big boots to fill covering Richie and he does it so well!

I like how the scream at the end of the video lines up perfectly with the one in the song, almost at the same pitch aswell!
I agree; I have an old Les Paul "recording" model and the ebony fretboard is the best fretboard I have ever played. It is fast and easy to the fingers. It indeed is a little less warmer than my newer Les Pauls with rosewood fretboards. The only problem I have ever had with ebony is the frets occasionally "raise up" on one end or the other.
Im not a fan of long videos, but when i see a new phil x i pray to god that its as long as possible!

Phil X must be the wish of every guitar dealer on the planet. His guitar playing is out of this world but more than that he is a charismatic sort of guy. His mum must be so proud of him.
I had that happen to me man, bought a new SG faded couple years ago, forgot to grab my strap with straplocks, and after about 20 minutes she fell and headstock took a clean break. I like the vipers sound, im just stubborn about Gibson haha. Thanks for the reply man, didn't think you responded to stuff. You're a good guitarist and have influenced me a bit from these vids and also The Drills. Keep rockin.

I have a 301 viper too! I wrap all the strings and put graphite saddles on and it helped a lot. Solid Mahogany, rosewood board, duncan 59 and Jazz, a coil tap, and locking tuners. I love it!

It's a P94 by Gibson, they are fitted to humbucker format.
He also has a signature pickup made by arcane you can purchase from his website. :-)

Also, you can get beautiful woods at a reasonable price if you don't go to the Gibson/Fender custom shops. There is Warmoth and USA custom guitars. You can get a great Warmoth guitar built for like 800-1,500 $, depending on a number of options, that will look and play as good or better than 99 % of the stuff coming out of the custom shops.

Thanks. Apparently a lot of people on here don't seem to agree! A number of people have done controlled, blind tests in studios and again and again people FAIL to accurately distinguish between different woods on guitars. People don't like to give up their old beliefs! I used to believe the wood hype. Either that or they don't want to admit tat they overspent on guitars! Theoretically the wood will change the sound but, it doesn't change it enough to be perceivable to humans!

The old saying "You can't judge a book by its cover" applies to Mr.X. Although he appears to have been hangin' at the Off Ramp club in Seattle 24/7 since 94',getting his fair share of poontang by singing Hunger Strike or Jeremy aloud to the jukebox,that simply isn't the case. Phil is a plethora of riffology and can make any electric guitar from the 50's to the present wail. Great source for finding that guitar/pick up combo you always wondered about. Best wishes,Rock on!

Phil, I also have the same LTD Viper as you (I think, as far as i can tell from yours) and i'd like to get your PX90's but on your site they are only shown in regular P90 shape, do you also stock ones like yours in humbucker form?
The 2 favorite guitars I have are Fender bodies, bought used or Mexi new cuz they are cheaper, with a Warmoth neck and upgraded pickups in both. Actually one of them is a Mexi Lonestar Strat body, with 2 Tex spec's and a PearlyG + Bridge pickup with a Warmoth neck, and the other I upgraded the pickups to D.Allen pickups plus a Warmoth neck! All together, each was 900 $ or less and they both play and sound like Custom Shop guitars. I just want to Warn people not to pay a lot EXTRA 4 wood!!!!
Maple is a bright wood and putting a flamed maple top on a guitar brightens up the sound a bit. It's not necessarily worse but it is different (more trebly) and probably something that Phil doesn't like. Everybody has a different taste. Besides. P-90's are typically brighter then humbuckers so having an all mahogany body probably balances the sound a bit more.
I noticed they were on the Andertons website. Can you get them in Canada by chance? Man, I'd love to check one out and pick it up.
