I remember as a kid getting to stay up late and watching the George Michael Sports Machine with my dad ! I thought it couldn’t get any better than that ! Look at how far it’s come. Amazing !
Dan Patrick. Sorry to hear hear he may stop by 2027. Met him once at a Samsung charity event at the Museum of Natural History in NYC, the main hall. Former First Lady Laura Bush was to speak I was covering for a trade publication covering tech around 2010 or so, to cover the speeches, and be my own amateur photographer. Got there early, the first celeb I saw was Dan. I introduced myself and asked to take a picture. He said sure. I screwed up the shot on my digital camera. I said, "It's a lousy shot. You're busy. I don't want to keep you." He graciously said, "I'm not busy, take your time." I took a couple of shots in this scenic hall. Showed it to him and it turned out fine. He's not only a great commentator of today's sports industry, but also a gentleman. This interview with Chris Berman, one of the great and entertaining sports broadcasters is wonderful. Australian rules football kept a young ESPN afloat in those early years. They aired a whole lot of those games. We had no idea what we were watching but it was entertaining as hell.
Facts my friend…facts. I was just a kid but completely remember Australian Rules Football on ESPN in the early and mid 80s. I waited for the little referee in the white suit with the white fedora to emphatically point his index fingers and move his arms downward to signify a score. Vintage ESPN will always bring me joy.
The absolute G.O.A.T. of the ESPN franchise. There's no single person/personality that rises above Berman and his impact on that network, as well as Sports TV journalism overall. I love him like a step-dad😊 From the late 80s thru the 90s, Berman was a Must Watch 'Anchor', and Dick Vitale was the Must Watch 'Color Analyst' while at The Mothership. They both changed how their respective job disciplines were approached and delivered. There's a good chance whoever you think is a great modern-day TV sports host studied and/or copied Berman and Vitale (honorable mention to Bob Costas at NBC during that exact time period) I'll sign off by giving homage to Chris with one of his many sports catchphrases that he made famous via the ESPN airwaves... As a cable ad sales guy from the early days ESPN was the one that got us all going, then it really took off with Sunday Night Football as Chris said. Besides basketball there was a heavy dose of Australian Rules Football and Midget Auto Racing that we'd use for "bonus" spots. Interest in local advertising on MTV really increased when Michael Jackson's hair caught fire during the making of a Pepsi commercial.
I remember the launch of ESPN growing up in CT as a kid. When they started putting up those huge dishes we thought it was something from a sci movie. Every weekend on the way to our Aunts house in Bristol we would look at them. haha Then when Chris bought his new construction house in Cheshire we only lived a couple miles from him. Back then, a 350+K house was the top tier of homes.
