Wanaka, New Zealand | 4K Walking Tour

Wānaka is a popular ski and summer resort town in the Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand. At the southern end of Lake Wānaka, it is at the start of the Clutha River/Mata-Au and is the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park.
Wānaka is primarily a resort town with both summer and winter seasons. Its economy is based on the many outdoor opportunities this offers.
Historically, Māori visited the Wānaka area to hunt and fish in summer, or on their way to seek pounamu (greenstone) on the West Coast. Ngāi Tahu abandoned their seasonal camps after a raid by a North Island war party in 1836.
The current town was founded as Pembroke during the gold rush of the 19th century, and renamed to Wanaka in 1940. Along with the rest of the Queenstown-Lakes District, Wānaka is growing rapidly.

New Zealand is absolutely a beautiful country. Well educated population, a safe calm civil environment. Can’t afford to move but I would love to live there. I’m American and it’s nothing like that here. Crazy is a better word for some places. Oh yea, and mass shootings. Everyone is armed.

Don't let this video fool you. I lived in wanaka and I'm glad I moved out. It's cool to see the nature stuff if you're a tourist but the locals did not go there everyday cause there's nothing new. The culture isn't diverse at all in wanaka so there's not a lot to do

@@ithinkihaveebola5238 Don't let Ebola's comment fool you. There's tons to do in Wanaka... as long as you are actually into "the nature stuff"! Wanaka is an eternal playground for people into hiking, biking, kayaking, sailing, skiing, jetboating, swimming, climbing, parasailing, or just relaxing with friends by a BBQ or talking gentle walks along the lake front. There are so many things to do outside, and the town is full of locals who like doing those things, but you have to actually want to *be* outside. Nature isn't just "stuff". It's life! And Wanaka is full of that life! As for cultural diversity, well, my partner's from Italy, I'm from the States, and last week we had a South African friend over for dinner. Only the kids were kiwis. All sorts of accents, cultural backgrounds, and perspectives. What we all have in common is a love of nature and physical activity. Wanaka is not for city mice waiting passively for packaged (and heavily advertised) entertainment and commodities to come to *them*. It's for people who relish getting out there on a trail, lake, river, or mountainside, getting a little sweaty and dirty and wet, and having an adventure! Even if it's just a little after-work jog, it's still a thrill to round the corner of Eely Point, descend the rocky zig-zags of Mount Iron, watch the grebes' nest building from the new boardwalk, scamper out of the way of daring mountain bikers in Sticky Forest, climb up (and then run down) the sandy hill border the Outlet Track, and wake up every morning to the sounds of birds, dogs, and happy children.
