    Katarina's whole life was tragic. She was named after a woman she hated (who was using her name as an alias), she had an abusive mother, her husband cheated on her with the woman she was named after, her son went missing then her husband. When she finds out what's going on and tries to free her husband she ends up getting killed by her mother. Just awful.

      @@kvm6true... but as a teenager. Lots of people did terrible things as kids and grew up. As a woman she's still a tragic figure. And her terrible behaviour, whilst deplorable was in part caused by her mother. Such an interesting character.

    Katarina's death hits even harder when you remember the lake scene from an earlier episode where, if I recall correctly, Magnus is telling the story of a woman who was murdered and had her body left at the bottom of the lake. Then you watch this episode and realize he was taking about his own mother without knowing it.

    • @coveredinporoustape
      @coveredinporoustape 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      it's kinda even worse? Bartosz is telling the story while Magnus dives under the surface and grabs Martha's leg to scare her, so Magnus is unknowingly pretending to be his dead mother grabbing his sister from under the lake, which is pleasantly chilling in hindsight.
      bonus: a little while later, Magnus sees what appears to be a dead body floating in the lake (it turns out to be Franziska, but still)

  • @luiscalzoncit2820
    @luiscalzoncit2820 2 ปีที่แล้ว +64

    I don't know why Katarina's death shook me the most to the core. Not only the event in itself but the genius storytelling. How insignificant the story of the drown women in the lake that seemed so unimportant at what was probably the "happiest" episode of the series, when we got to see all of our beloved characters smiling before the tragedy of fate struck them and then tying it to the death of one of the most important characters of the show. Katarina and Peter had their faults, like you said. but they were clearly in the "heroic" side of the characters, unlike Ulrich and Hanna.
    And our poor beautiful Jonas, who was tormented and abused constantly through this series. He was just an innocent, mild mannered teenager who loved his father. And the saddest thing is that he wasn't even bound to become Adam at all. He died a martyr. With wings to boot.

    When Mikkel arrives at the school in season 1, we hear a conversation about a song (Jeanny by Austrian singer Falco) which (seemingly) is about a guy who captures and kills a girls because her red lipstick caught his attention. Young Hannah mentions her father says lipstick would be for prostitutes only. When we see Elli using Franziska's lipstick soon after, everyone expected her to be the next child go missing, were relieved when she isn't and thought they led us deliberately in the wrong direction. In season 2 we hear the song on the radio when Magnus visits Benny's "trailer of love". And now Elli almost fell victim to a s3xcrime at that location.

    You have no idea how much I love this episode! Not only the writing is so on point but the music (In the Woods Somewhere by my favourite artist Hozier) used in the montage also fits perfectly with the narrative. The song talks about a fox (I see this as Elisabeth Doppler, we’ve seen her with a fox hat early on in the first season, the song choice is definitely intentional) that has been attacked by some kind of predator/monster in the woods and the singer showing mercy by killing it to end the pain. Then he goes on to sing about being preyed upon by the same monster that attacked the fox and he’s running to save the life he didn’t have. It’s so beautiful and melancholic.

    The story is so tragic. Katarina grew up with an abusive, mentally unwell mother who wishes she'd gone through another abortion, but she broke out of it and became a great mother herself, only to die at the hands of her own mother anyway decades later. Ulrich wouldn't even know what happened to her and he'd presumably just live out the rest of his days in that asylum. Our Jonas, the one who travelled to a different universe, is now dead; but had he lived he would have grown old to be Adam, the very man who inflicted the most painful hurt to himself.
    Given this, what kind of ending would be a good ending? I wonder what Im thinks...

    (Young Peter is played by Adult Peter's Actor's son ^.^ )

  • @Mike500
    @Mike500 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    There is a direct connection between young Helene Albers' abortion and her troubled relationship with her daughter later in life, when Katharina has her first sexual experiences with Ulrich. Helene wants Katharina to stay innocent at all costs, unlike what has happened to herself as a kid. As we know by now: "A person lives three lives. The first ends with the loss of naïveté, the second with the loss of innocence, and the third with the loss of life itself." Katharina, despite being sort of a bully at school and initially continuing the cycle of violence she experienced at home by her mother, later actually turns out to be a good mother herself to Martha, Magnus and Mikkel. That is, until she travels to the past to find Mikkel and free old Ulrich, gets into a struggle with her mom (who is slightly younger there than time-traveled-Katharina) and gets killed by her mom, because Helene assumes Katharina is the demon of her aborted child that the devil sent to torment her...
    By the way, in the 80s, Katharina was posted up in that house for three months or so, searching everywhere for Mikkel during the day, sleeping in his bed at night. On the evening of her untimely death, Mikkel finally returns to the house, and they miss being reunited by a fraction of a day. Upon first viewing, i didn't realize how much this actually adds to the tragedy.
    In the last scene, the family tree becomes Jonas' angel wings 😢

    I don't think Noah knew how exactly Peter would die. In season 2 episode 1, his older self basically tells him that he won't tell him (his younger self) everything that's going to happen or how because it would prevent him from being able to do what needs to be done later. Also, when he returns to the cave to find Elisabeth there the look he has on his face seems like shock mixed with pity. I think he was told that she needed to be protected after her dad dies but not much else. Their relationship later seems like it evolved naturally and that they really were in love. As horrible as what happened to Eli in the camper was, I like knowing that after she found her way to Noah, nobody dared to fuck with her again. She's a badass on her own, but I'm sure he taught her how to take care of herself too.

    But yes, this is such an intense episode. Young actress that plays Elisabeth did AMAZING, such a powerful performance. I felt Peter + Katharina's deaths more in my soul than Jonas' as well. They really did not deserve this. And Ulrich, standing there all alone. Pff, I felt that.

    Following your reactions on Dark from the beginning, I was looking forward for you to react especially on this episode. It's my favorite of the whole series for the reasons you mentioned, but mostly because of the brilliance of that trailer-scene. Such an outstanding camera work, haunting music and soundeffects and above all the fantastic acting of Carlotta von Falkenhayn as Elli. I was shocked, when I saw it for the first time and thinking of Dark in general, that scene comes to my mind first.
    Well, I'm ready for the last three. Be prepared for the next one. It was the most difficult to get, for me at least. But you'll be fine, as always. I enjoy your reactions to Dark a lot. Greetings from Berlin.

    Such a hard episode to watch. I watched this for the first time yesterday and man, kinda traumatized me. I hate that Ellie had to be there while her father was murdered and be the one to kill the guy. It was an awful scene. Broke my heart what she had to go through from beginning to end. I don't think I'll ever get over it, that was so traumatic for her. Really interesting seeing the love in young Noah's eyes when he comes to her, like this love and compassion for her. Really looking forward to seeing how their relationship progresses. Also gosh, Katarina going out like that at the hands of her own mother, jeez. What a horrible end to her story. Had a really hard time watching that and her mom using this notion of her not being real to justify her actions. And then to follow that by her continuing to be abusive to young Katarina with no compassion for her is so heartbreaking. Gosh. And with young, but not current Martha being the one to kill Jonas!? Wow. Wow. And like you said, the pain is still so fresh for her. I really wonder what brings her to the point of pulling the trigger so soon after seeing it happen.
    Looking forward to you seeing the next episode next week, it's one of my new favorites I think.
