    Hi Vanessa, you have a great project in your very pretty cabin. There's a lot of repair work needed, but it can be fun as well, and part of the magic is the satisfaction you get from doing your own repair work, for just the cost of the materials. The number one priority, as you pointed out, has to be the roof! then the rest can proceed at a more leisurely pace. Not only do you get pleasure from you renovating, but you give us great pleasure to be here with you, and able to interact with you.💖

    IDEAS: A power generator is excellent with proper exhaust ventilation. Would a solar panel be practical outside of the cabin for electricity? Remove the soil from around the cellar walls under the floor. Then check if water still collects and floods the cellar floor. Is your roof made of tiles? Are they ceramic or plastic tiles? Do you have a friend to help you make roof repairs. There may be a way to put an elevated cat walk on the roof to prevent roof collapse from body weight. Precious children. Do they have a grandpa? More ideas to come. 🙂

    Hi Vanessa, great video!. When I was growing up we lived in an old house. It was built before ordinary people could afford a fridge. All houses has a cellar that was stay cool all year round. This was the place people kept meat, cheese and other food. Your "cellar" was put in to keep beer and food chilled so that it what I would use it for. I would repair any holes and cracks so that water or animals cannot get into it.
    It is great to see your kids playing outside, sadly there is very little of that now, some parents are scared of their children getting dirty or scratched, this is how your kids get a healthy immune system so well done! , Your kids look like they have a fantastic time with Mom out in the forest :-)

    Ask the cabin owner if he has extra roofing tiles that may be left over from the original roofing job so that the repairs can be performed with a lesser expense. There may even be some extra roofing tiles being stored underneath the cabin itself!

    I would build a mini shed away from the cabin. For a generator. Dog house size. Low profile. Have electric. Not wory about carbon monoxide. I would power wash the entire cabin outside. Then stain her dark brown. Awesome place!! Beautiful family also. Kids are adorable. Stay safe out there enjoy the videos. Love from Michigan.

    The little cellar needs waterproofing (tanking)
    I would not store edibles in there as that will attract creatures. Ideal for drinks in bottles or cans. The roof You definitely need help with fixing. Very quickly.
    But you’re making a lovely space for you and the children. Plus family & friends.

  • @robertadelsberger3749
    @robertadelsberger3749 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    I think I would use the cellar for a place to keep items that are valuable or at least items you don’t want to be in plain view. Possibly things that you want to keep out of the reach of the children. As for the wall repair, maybe you can find someone who has salvaged wood left over from renovation project. If you talk to someone from the local lumber yard, they many times know how you can get such material.

    • @robertadelsberger3749
      @robertadelsberger3749 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If it’s noise from the generator that you’re worried about. Place the generator behind a small wall, such as the one you built from the branches. If you then direct the exhaust away from the wall you will find it to be surprisingly quiet.

    Hi Vanessa paint the cellar with Bitumen tar & then line it with a rubber pond liner, hope this helps, ATB Wayne UK.

  • @danielvrana9444
    @danielvrana9444 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You need to paint the cellar with a paint that is for concrete basement.
    It will hold out the damp water.
    You can get a boat bilge pump that has a float on it so if the water comes in it will pump it out. Then you can get a solar panel for the battery so you never lose a charge.
    The roof is in need of a professional roofer.
    Great vid loved the kids!❤️

    There is a paint/sealer you can use on the cellar to prevent water from coming in. Hydraulic paint for basements. You can do it yourself. You can take a thick garbage bag in it to use it until is sealed. Good luck Vanessa!

    Hello! I'm a new subscriber and really enjoy your channel!! Here in Oregon, USA we have mice issues as well. What really works to keep them out is 'steel wool' the mice can't chew thru it and get inside. I stuff it in all the small cracks in my out buildings. Also for your cellar, you can purchase 'flex seal' in an aerosol can and spray it all over the cement surfaces an it becomes waterproof. Hope these ideas help!

    @ 7:15 I see spare roof tiles under the cabin 😊, they can replace the broken ones. Usually they have holes to fasten with nail and mount overlapping. If you can remove the nails, you should be able to remove tiles and replace broken tiles easily. This will get you through the rainy season, until a proper repair of the rotten roof can be done.

    Two ideas. On the siding outside just paint the new boards brownish grey to match the rest. Idea for the cellar. I would build a box that could be raised and lowered by a pulley system and used as a small cooler for food. You are one hard worker and you are amazing. Good luck.

    As much as I love the look of the old tile roof, I'd be inclined to replace it with a metal roof. It would probably be cheaper than fixing the existing roof and you could more easily shape the metal to fit around that tree next to the cabin (if the property owner won't let you cut it down - it's too close to the cabin!!). Besides, the sound of rain on a metal roof (along with a fire in a wood stove) is so wonderful! I'd want a wood stove also to help keep the moisture level down. Your hard work at the cabin is really paying off! It looks great!

    You'll likely need to replace the entire roof if you have moss and mold growing into the wood. Thankfully you did not walk up there, I feel it is structurally weak, and you may have fallen through. If that space under the flooring was used as a cellar, with a little waterproofing it could be one again. If the space is at least 6m deep, the temp at the bottom would be about 10-16C, enough for a cool beverage but I wouldn't store meat or cheese in there unless you place them inside a normal cooler. You also have to be careful about keeping a brush pile of wood so near your home, this is a perfect spot for small rodents or other critters you wouldn't want finding their way into your cabin. Mice love to burrow into wood piles, and having it so close to the cabin only makes it likely they will get in. Great video as always, Vanessa.

    Love the cabin the children seem excited to be there....it' is a place they will remember throughout their lives. To me the cellar will be a excellent place to store many things...perhaps a basket to raise and lower things in and out would be handy. I ❤what you are doing, can't wait for more....❤from Texas.

  • @alexrubio62
    @alexrubio62 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do not put the generator in the cellar. Create a box or shelter outside next to the shelter which can provide proper ventilation and security as well. Use the cellar for what it is designed to do. You can seal up the cracks in the concrete/cement then apply a water proof paint or basement sealer on the outside walls of the cellar. This will prevent the ground water from coming into the cellar.
    Since the wood to the cellar door/cabin floor is rotten, you will need to replace it. You should consider doing an inspection underneath the floor of the cabin to see if there are any other spots that may need repair/replacement of the floor.
    I hope that this helps.
    Thank you for sharing you life with the world.
    Blessings to you and your family :)
    Sincerely,
    Alex

    Hi Vanessa: Amazing how natural children can be even if a camera is on them. Mastic will make amazing temporary roof repairs . If you run joined ladders over both sides of the roof you can usually stay on them safely to make repairs. My family used such a hole to keep things cool as in a root cellar. Thanks Brian 79

    To make a permanent seal of the cellar, i would suggest a concrete epoxy sealant, coating the inside liberally, should seal out the water, second: suggest a few cans of expansion foam to coat the outside if you can get to it, at least fill in the cracks near the top. Finally third: make a new inside cover and put a sheat of foam board on to insulate it, if you bring a few plastic containers of frozen water and place inside, it would hold the temperature colder for a few days in the least. Very nice little spot for you to utilize.

    At least then it will remain dry for future use.

    Great progress! Roof shingles aren't as bad as I thought either. Camo net may attract hornets, bats, spiders, etc. though. Cellar cleaned with bleach and mice chew through foam so I would seal with metal and drop a couple plastic coolers with lids in to tightly fit and that can be easily removed for access to food/drinks and clean. Bituthene can be bought in sheets and it is a rubbery black thick tacky material that was apparently used ages ago for Noah's Ark) that should be able to be pressed into place to keep the water out. Then a plastic layer so the coolers don't get stuck in there. IMHO off the top of my head anyway....

    Wild Woman Vanessa👍👍 Working hard at the forest cabin I see😊 Yeah, get some professional help out there with that roof, very important to repair it properly and as soon as possible...rain will be there soon🤔 You can get reclaimed barn wood to repair the outside wall, it will be weathered and look more natural as well as being less expensive👌 The small "cellar" needs a cleaning, a fresh coat of concrete, concrete sealer and a galvanized metal box that fits the size. Yes this! Where internal combustion engine generators are concerned you always what to set it up so if there is a failure you will still be safe. In this case if there is an exhaust leak you want the gasses outside of the cabin where they can drift away safely.

    The cellar could be a place to store prepper supplies in case the need should ever arise - It would be nice if you could power wash the exterior or scrub down the wood so after the repairs and bad wood replaced it would look nice with an exterior protective stain was used to make it all a uniform color ( like a shade of dark brown ) Just some thoughts - I know it is a lot of work.

    Do not put the generator in the cellar. It will get too hot and the risk of toxic fumes getting inside the cabin. Build a box bigger than the generator outside the cellar with a few air holes. Drill a hole in the cabin and run the cord through the hole. Put a sealant around the hole you drilled..... Also fix the rafters in the attic as soon as possible. Then you can go on the roof and put a tarp over it till you get the roof fixed. Good Luck Vanessa ❤

    Die unterbergler bierkellar? Hi Vanessa, once you have waterproofed your unterberglerkellar. The best suggestion is to use it as a cool room to store food and drink. Die kinder will love ginger beer, a very popular soft drink, there are recipes on the web but you must be aware to only allow so much time for the yeast to ferment otherwise the result is burst bottles before putting the bottles in the fridge. It is this which produces the fizz with very little alcohol. As for the mice, they can chew holes in the wood and through domestic electric wiring therefore all your food must be stored in strong containers just like the Americans with their bear proof boxes. You have two lovely children who are so lucky to have such a wonderful mum. Best wishes=John.

    Vanessa - Use the Cellar as Mother Nature's Refrigerator. Here in Michigan, the ground temperature is 50°F [10°C]. I am sure it is at least 10°C down in the Cellar, maybe cooler. Install some rods, to hang and store foods that require refrigeration.

    Your cabin looks better with the roof cleaned off and you can see what have to be repaired. I recommend that for your safety and that of your children I would not put a generator inside the cellar, but have it outside with the heat from it being pumped into the house and use the cellar to store supplies in and use it to put other supplies in for an emergency. The netting you put up is nice and helps to hide the cabin, and eventually you will have to replace the boards on the outside so it won't let water in, because the boards are looking bad on the outside now.

    If you are able to procure a long plank to lay on the roof to distribute your weight you will find it most useful over time. A ladder such as you are using now can also work. We sometimes attach 2 sections at the peak, one on each side of the roof. If the roofing material is not available a patch may be asfixed/attached at the place being repaired. A piece of galvanized screen can be bent in the shape needed and placed over the hole. Then a coating/several coats of "elastomeric" can be applied. Elastomeric can be tinted to match the roofing so take a piece that broke off with you to your paint supplier. Elastomeric is white and tints easily, dries fast and strong. It bonds extremely well to meticulously clean surfaces. You may wish to study up on an asphalt based high tech product called in the US, " Ice and Water Shield". You may also find it listed/called "Bitumen". It is tricky to work with but also has extreme versatility in many applications. It is black and so is something you may use beneath your finished and exposed roof. It is nice to see your accomplishments.
    It is wonderful to join you in your excitement with the cabin.
    I think your cellar is best to remain as such. All comments by others re the generator have good safety and are valid. The cellar can be lined with metal but many metals will have electrolysis occur in contact with concrete. Aluminum is one of these. I would hesitate to seal with any waterproofing chemical but would instead suggest that a box such as is holding your tools (it appears to be stainless steel) might be ideal as it can be removed for cleaning most easily. Dropping in an ice chest is also an alternative.

    I'd say you could use that space as a root cellar.
    Potato's ect... rooted vegy's .
    Or preserved caned goods.
    That even might have been used to keep wild game that was hunted.
    Until he returned home.
    A cooler or a liner would help to keep thing's stay good in there.
    Your doing a fantastic job"
    Hug and a smile.

    Hi , the roof now is looking great and clean , the roof tiles that are broken can be easily lifted up and replaced , they look like modern tiles so must be obtainable from a builders merchant store , new tiles can be easily pinned and put into place , the new cladding patches of new wood can be painted in exterior wood paint that can come close to the older wood , it would save using a camouflage net , it would stop people thinking you are trying to hide something.

    As others have said put a tarp over your roof and put the moss on the tarp to weigh it done, a rubber lining would most likely get you through, praying for you Vanessa, God bless.

    Hallo Vanessa. Might I suggest the following; PLEASE NOTE - (Products suggested by contributors may not be readily available in Germany)
    (1) Not having the portable power generator in the cellar. You need immediate and ease of access to the generator should there be any malfunction or servicing. Used in a confined space invites a myriad of potential problems i.e. Carbon monoxide poisoning for starters and the risk of fire. (2) Cellar, once cleaned, around the edge/ lip of entrance, use concrete plaster (or a hydraulic sealant product). Ensure to create a lip extending above the ground flush with inside of the cabin flooring. This will help keep out water coming in from the top. The cellar, line with a anti-mold/ anti-fungus eco-friendly barrier liner paint. That will also waterproof the cellar walls and floor. Your local IKEA or Hornbach store should have this. Inside round the lid you could possibly install 12v (AAA battery), LED strip lighting. Have a one (1") inch thick perspect door custom made so you can see what's going on down there. With a low temperature analog or digital gauge. (3) Roofing Tiles - I see you have a couple of roofing tiles stored under the cabin? Can these be used to replace the broken tiles on the roof? Do you have sufficient tiles to replace the broken ones? After awhile materials get a naturally occuring pertina, "weathering," and so it maybe difficult to source matching replacement tiles. A recycled building demolishing store may have the style of roofing tile. Engaging roofing specialists are your first call. But, we all know how costly these things become. Besides, doing it yourself is much more satisfying with the right advice, tools, enthusiasm and friends volunteering their time. A complete unadulterated inspection survey of the roof. Once you have wood rot established there is no point applying a quick-fix patch-up solution most 'handyman,' suggest. Best advice is to complete a thorough roof inspection, removal of rotten sections, repair and replace. You don't need professional builders to do the work as I am guessing, it is not permitted work and therefore approval is not required by your local municipality? Just sound balanced advice, the right advice, good materials, the right tools for the job, cooperative weather window and a team of helpers who know there way around a carpenter's saw and can swing a hammer etc...

    Vanessa - After you repair the cellar, to keep out the water, and, the mice, you can use cutable styrofoam, line the bottom and sides, with it, then, make a cover, for the top, under, the flor piece. It will keep your cooler items, cold, all summer.

    Use the cellar as a fruit cellar and refrigerator to cool food and drinks. Don't put a generator in that space even with a way for exhaust to escape. We have an off grid cabin and use a solar charger to charge a deep cycle battery. The deep cycle battery is connected to an inverter that supplies 110 Vac but in Deutchland, you can probably get an inverter for your voltage. We also use a small 800 Watt 2-cycle generator to charge the battery and supply power in the day. At nigh we switch to the battery and inverter. It works great! Hey Vanessa , the cabin is really shaping up great,. please do not put generator in an enclosed area, its Dangerous, but it wold be a superb fridge , once it is completely sealed with, a waterproof based cement product and then ceramic tile it , the children may enjoy colouring some white tiles and then kiln them to dry off. another project the children and yourself could do, is making miniature moss gardens in small wooden trays , they could divide different mosses with colourful stones or pine cones/wood etc. as they love decorating the cabin .. ATVB To you and yours. … oh and a great vid too ,thanks for sharing.

    About the cellar I recommend for the floor of cellar you get wooden pellets that they give away free at some business or stores that get supplies on them ! they are built out of hard wood like Oak or Maple !!🤩👍 they are usually 4ft by 4ft ! Place them on the floor of Cellar right in the middle of small room . Stack them as high as you need to stay out of the summer water that comes in Cellar ? Then put up shelving on three of the walls for food storage . As for the new wood on out side of cabin get some used paint in olive green &earth brown & some rust reddish paint !!!sometimes thrift stores or garage sales pick up for A couple dollars . Then get some cheap brushes 3 of them & Camouflage the new wood smudging on with brushes . This will blend in with the forest !!!👍🇺🇸❤️🧑🏻‍🎨 Robert from Pittsburg .🧙🏻‍♀️
