Guns for hands was written after tyler spoke with young fans about their experiences with suicidal thoughts and urges. He’s saying he can’t sleep because he’s afraid they’ll hurt themselves. That they should channel the energy towards music and being with other people like themselves.
My favorite line from the first verse is “you swear to your parents it will never happen again, I know what that means” this is a direct mention to self harm
about self-harm... "I know what you think in the morning When the sun shines on the ground And shows what you have done It shows where your mind has gone And you swear to your parents That it will never happen again"
I always think of this song as an example of the profound relationship they have with their fans. Tyler put to music his worry over his fans' suicidal thoughts and the potential of his influence. So he encourages them to change their plans by turning their guns to fists. Fight it together. Direct their feelings into the music. Go outside and all join hands. The lyrics here are so poignant and worth diving into. Stay alive, frens |-/ 💛💙💛
guns for hands is basically about being suicidal. tyler says "i'm trying to sleep, but i can't when you all have guns for hands." meaning that he's worried about people/his fans being suicidal or self harming.
Josh actually had a panic attack after he put the duck tape on his head because he felt like he couldn't breathe. Tyler came over, calmed him down and told him that everything was OK. Friendship Goals!
This song has saved many lives. Tyler talks about self harming and suicide. He couldn't sleep thinking about all those fans struggling at night with suicidar thoughts. And yes!!! They are playing this song in this tour! I just got to experience it live yesterday!!! Best day of my life!!!!!
As a therapist I imagined that you have been in the very position this song is singing about. Tyler can’t sleep because he is worried about fans who have disclosed to him that they are experiencing suicide ideation. His message is don’t take your life. Instead find comfort and belonging in his music. And turn your guns into a fist. Meaning don’t take your life…fight for it.
one of my favorites from RAB/Vessel, it's a song that talks about self-harm and suicidal thoughts, Tyler wrote the song after having a talk with his fans about their problems and suicidal thoughts and how he relates to them, I think is a beautiful and very positive song, the title of the song refers to having a gun in his hands referring to self-harm and the part where he says "I'm trying to sleep" is true because Tyler has always loved and cared for his fans and there were times when Tyler couldn't sleep because he thought if one of his fans was hurt or even committed suicide, in the same way Josh also loves his fans, he used to write by dm to fans giving them words of support and help. And yes, in concerts it is a SPECTACULAR song, especially the part where he says "turn our gun into a fist"
When he hands Josh the mask the print says, "They won't know its you. You can take it off when you're ready". Josh had a lot of anxiety in general, but also bouts of stage fright (which he's always worked through and played amazing shows anyway). I'm pretty sure that's what's being referenced. People have already explained the basics of the song, so I'll spare you another version. 😂 This song means a lot to a lot of clikkies. Never thought I'd get to see it live! I'm so excited.
Tyler: “You can take it off when you’re ready.” Josh: *rips mask off the moment he gets to his drums* 🥁 😹 Josh’s anxiety melts away at the drum kit. It’s therapy for him. One of the reasons he beats so hard on them 😜
this song means to much to me personally, i don’t believe i would be exaggerating to say that it saved my life. although tyler writes his music openly so that you can perceive it in many different ways, i always thought that guns for hands was talking about suicide and self harm… on spotify i believe there’s a commentary that confirms that too, after tyler spoke with his young fans and saw that they too were struggling with these thoughts and feelings. the first few verses hint at that quite a bit, but it took me a few listens to really grasp what this song was fully talking about. anyways in the end it’s definitely a song i relate deeply to and i will always treasure it :) thanks for your reaction, i cant wait to watch more!
I saw them for the first time last Sunday in Cincinnati and they did play this song live. I wasn't expecting it but it was a nice surprise. They performed more older songs than I expected in general. I think Jumpsuit, Heathens, Car Radio, and of course Trees were my favorite performances at that show but I enjoyed all of the songs they played.
One thing a therapist should be able to do is see the signs of suicidal ideation or descriptions of self harm. Just saying.. that’s what this is about.
I have said this on other videos, so I apologize for repeating, but, my son introduced me to the boys in about 2015 when I found out the hard way that he was self-harming and had suicidal thoughts. We listened to them in the car on the way to and from his outpatient day classes after he was released from the hospital. He had not actually tried to end his life, just told the school- 4 times in a calender year- that he had a plan to. He was self-harming, but it was explained to me that the two aren't always related to each other. Anyway, we had been listening to them and the boys were coming to town for their Emotional Roadshow tour and I got tickets for us to go. While we were there, they played this song and it all of a sudden hit me what the lyrics were saying. I had heard them but I wasn't listening- until the concert. It helped me understand both of our roles, as parent and child, and a little about what was going on in his head and in mine. The whole show was an emotional rollercoaster for me as well. I have had ongoing depression for many years and have developed anxiety over time. I felt like I was in a forest of people just like me and we were all there having been through similar things and happened to find a band who knew it all too. It was amazing. I sang. I yelled my "Yeah Yeah Yeah's" and cried during Trees. I really want to see them again and take my youngest son, but we just haven't been able to make it work- YET! We will though. We must. PS My oldest is better now. I think he still has things going on but I think he is handling them better or differently or something (he's 23, he doesn't share much...) But the boys are just what we needed, at different times in our lives and for different reasons, but they were, and still are, there when we need them. Level of Concern really helped me feel connected to someone during a very tumultuous and scary time. The Christmas song was so nostalgic and lovely. I listen to it year-round. I love them and how they really seem to care about us and appreciate us and they are good people with very humble backgrounds and they aren't awful humans. I'll stop now. I think you get what I am saying. Night all!
I've seen a couple comments contextualizing sleep as a theme in the song. All very on point. Another perspective I wanted to add was their other song Ode to Sleep. Tyler talks about what sleep is to him and how sleep gives him the opportunity to relax from constantly fighting his own inner demons. So layer that on top of the interpretations about how he wrote the song to tell fans he's not stopping until he's helped us deal with our issues, and stop using our Guns for Hands
To me this speaks struggling with any sort of issues, especially anything that's harmful for oneself. An addict, for example, will wake up in the morning and realize how they messed up, and it's a struggle when the matter of addiction is always available, "guns for hands".
Yes, in fact Guns for Hands is their 2nd "opener" to the concert after the duo of 'Scaled and Icy' songs to start! You'll love this show... I saw them Wednesday night for the first timeand it was fantastic!
With the exception of the 6 smallest venue stops on the takeover tour, they hadn't played it live since 2017. Last week was my 6th time seeing them live so I was SO excited to hear it!
I saw them last week in Detroit and oh my god they were absolutely incredible! I got a couple images of Tyler being within five peoples lengths of me. The visuals, the banter, everything about it was insane.

This and many of their songs are written about mental health and the struggles that so many young people and old go thru. I really think the most important thing they want people to know is no matter who you are what age you are or how bad things seems there are other people out there with their own things maybe not the same as you but connecting with others and just talking can make the difference. I might be wrong on their message or intent but i do believe there is a power inside all people that can lift others up and in turn help themselves to deal with life situations. Either way this is probably my favorite song from them and honestly they have like 25-30 of my all time favorite songs
They use the mask to to hide behind from there anxiety and it could be easy to take off when they want. This is about people or fans who have thoughts of taking there life. By using duck tape it is harder to take off. Remember at the beginning he promised the parents they won't do it again. He can't sleep when he knows some fans are thinking of suicide.
