  • West Side Story: Legendary writer and director Arthur Laurents returns to Theater Talk to discuss directing the current Broadway revival of the 1957 musical classic.
Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.
The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.)
The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts.

In his second memoir, The Rest of the Story, Laurents says a producer of Theatre Talk was overheard in the green room before this interview saying that Riedel had told Haskins to back off and "leave Laurents to him". He was determined to skewer him on what Sondheim had supposedly said about the revivals of Gypsy and WSS. Which is why all Laurents says no more than "you should ask him". Laurents lambasts Riedel pretty thoroughly in the book as a nasty piece of work. Which may well have been the pot calling the kettle black. In any case, it's Haskins who first mentions Sondheim and Riedel does not seem particularly malicious here (though he certainly could be). Of course, Laurents was both paranoid and defensive after years of rubbing just about everyone up the wrong way.

He might have said that, but Laurents was always a bitch and constantly said stuff he didn't mean. In his last memoir he talks of Streisand with real fondness, especially after they discussed her doing Gypsy. He says the three-hour conversation they had left him with a deep affection for her, and convinced she could play the part. So there.
