  • I got asked the question several times about what files can be removed on an Android so that Google spyware is disabled. The answer is that it is impossible to do that. But WHY is that? This video will explain the construction of the Operating system on an Android which will explain what you can or cannot do.

Hello Rob, thank you for that detailed explanation of how devices get so much googled that those apps can't be removed from stock ROM without any critical consequences.
As a de-googled (or rather non-googled) phones user myself, I want to add that since you flash your device with any custom ROM which has no Google apps by default, its performance becomes different. I have 2 weak phones with LineageOS: Redmi 7A, running at LOS 20, and Moto G3 running at LOS 17.1. Originally they also had GApps (minimal package) installed over LineageOS, but later I've tried to flash them with stock LineageOS. There are things I've noticed a difference with:
*1. Storage usage.* Nowadays Google apps become way too bloated, and standard Google Play services (GMS) weigh over half a GB. In total Google apps may take over a gigabyte from your storage. Of course, if you remove them, you'll acquire some extra free space. For example, Moto G3 now has 3,81GB free space of 8GB total. And this is Android 10, not a stock 6.0.1 version.
*2. RAM* (also swap partition) *usage.* You can check active processes in developers' settings, and you will see GMS constantly consuming a couple of hundreds of MBs constantly. And these MBs of RAM are the ones you've bought, and Google takes YOUR OWN resources to collect YOUR personal data. This is not a thing you should tolerate in my opinion.
*3. Traffic usage.* I always set up traffic usage monitor in Android status bar, and it automatically disappears when there's no any network activity. A thing I've noticed, when I've re-flashed my Redmi 7A, which is currently my main device, this network monitor almost stopped appearing, and when it appears, it shows 1KB/s download activity. Of course, messengers should somehow check for new messages, so this activity is explainable. In other words, there's no any unnecessary background network data exchange on non-googled devices. Actually can save you some MBs for your mobile data package.
*4. Battery usage!* This is the thing that becomes really different since you reject Google. In standby mode your device almost stops consuming any battery charge. You just clear recent apps and turn off the screen, and there's the magic occurs, you can leave a phone for days or weeks, and it won't turn off. Of course, it depends on specific phone and its battery condition, but your device becomes rather cellphone-like than a stock ROM device-like in terms of battery consumption. But the difference is, your Android most likely has at least 3000mAh battery (my Redmi has 4000 mAh), meanwhile regular cellphone has 400~1500 mAh battery. So every Android device which is supported by AOSP community, has a very great battery life potential.
*5. Overall performance.* As a result of removing GMS, which is background software, you decrease the load on your device, including CPU, memory, network, etc. As a result, your device would have better performance, UI would get smoother, apps would work faster, meanwhile your hardware would remain the same.
Greetings from Russia, and I hope you will tell about that in some of your next videos, since you tell a lot about privacy advantages of non-googled phones, but there are another ones, which are also important. (Actually you can de-google your phone even if you don't care about your privacy, but just for better performance.)

Pixels allowing de-googling is an interesting point. Like google understood that you modyfing your phone actually don't negatively impact the company. You had to buy the phone (and pay for it) in the first place.
Which brings to question - what kind of crap do the manufacturers add through their proprietary layer that they so wish not to be removed.

    • @craigslist6988
      @craigslist6988 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

@hereandnow1440 yeah real reason google allows it is they know they have a way in if necessary. I think also for plausible deniability that they 'support' options - they would risk what happened to MS trying to force their programs to be installed. But you know they would block it if they could which is why they have pushed every other phone developer to lock them down to oblivion, making it impossible to change the OS/ROM. They have also changed the architecture of android itself, not just the OS but the hardware stack, replacing definitive partitioned memory for 'virtual' partitions, which coincidentally are impossible or extremely difficult to use with a modified OS.
Been a while since I did this research, but as of android 11 you can't even use the old partition layout. That also means no dual booting, or using A/B boot partitions to easily update and flash new ROMs. The manufacturer can also encrypt the device driver partitions on these, making it yet more difficult to run a custom ROM.
Google isn't supporting open use of android phones, despite what it looks like offering unlockable bootloaders, so don't feel safe that we really only have apple and google for phone options.

Hi Rob - I have a Samsung Android phone and have very much wanted to get a phone that has true privacy. As you mention, if it were to be degoogled it is still a Samsung and Samsung has their own OEM software and Apps and they track you and collect data. So, degoogling doesn't really work in that sense to be private, plus as you have mentioned it is also inconvenient as there are also many apps that will no longer work since it is degoogled.
If I was able to get a deggogled phone and one in which there is not OEM apps tracking me and collecting data, isn't the mobile service carrier still able to track and collect data through their sim card being used in the phone? And if so, how does the brax phone prevent that type of privacy invasion from the mobile carrier service? Additionally, the car has android auto and it automatically recognizes android phones. Is android auto in vehicles able to invade your privacy? And if so, is there anyway to prevent that?

    • @terrydaktyllus1320
      @terrydaktyllus1320 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Samsung are deliberately locking down their hardware as Apple already do which is why they focused for years on Exynos based CPUs which are very closed source by design - hence the difficulty in porting AOSP-based distro to Samsung devices.
I personally have boycotted Samsung products for several years now for that same reason (and because they moved away from MicroSD storage around the Galaxy S8 phone). With that said, I do have several old Samsung tablets that were bought cheaply on eBay and repaired/refurbished by me and only remain in my possession now because I have managed to install unofficial LineageOS builds on them to completely de-Google them - otherwise they would go back on eBay or just be thrown in the bin.
As regards the mobile carrier taking your data, there's a number of points to make here:
      1. Until 5G, carrier tracking is via cell tower triangulation which has about 1/2 square mile accuracy - compared to 2 meters accuracy with Google / Apple wifi triangulation.
      2. Google "steals" data through the T&C's in its products which you don't have to use anyway - but it is very much a data harvesting company that will use and sell your data. Your mobile phone company may use your data for, say, network planning but they are not making money with advertising and harvesting your data.
      3. With your mobile provider, you probably have a mobile phone contract with them so they already know your personal details anyway. Google does not start off having that information unless you let them have it.
As regards "Android Auto", I would not buy a car with Android Auto in it.

Hi Rob, sorry ahead of time for the long post. I'm contemplating the purchase of one of your Brax2's(or 'de-googled' Pixels) but I have some specific questions.
    1) Security-
I've been on the internet since the early days of Compuserve and dial up modems using a ColecoVision Adam. I've also had a cell phone since about the mid-late 90's. I know HOW to use the tech, but I have zero knowledge about the inner workings or coding and really need outside information on those subjects. Can you point to any reputable 3rd party reviewers that have thoroughly tested a phone with your BraxOS for security?
    2) Durability-
I spend a lot of time outdoors, both for work and play, so I am somewhat hard on things like cell phones. Does your current(or future) line of phones have any IP rating for dust/moisture? Are the bodies based on another phone and fit readily available cases from OtterBox or similar?
    3) IMEI-
I came across something on your website about the IMEI of a users phone coming up as 'stolen' and causing issues with the carrier(can't find the exact post at this time). I assume this would be caused by flashing a new(fake) IMEI to the phone so it will be compatible with certain carriers. Is it possible to avoid that scenario by flashing the new phone with the IMEI of a purchasers old phone that they know won't be reported stolen? If possible, does the IMEI have to be from an Android phone or would even an iPhone IMEI work?
    4) Connectivity-
Does the Brax2 have the ability to be used as a hotspot?
    5) Carriers-
What carriers do you find have the least issues being used with a 'de-googled' phone?

    • @robbraxmantech

#1 I'm not a third party so ask the people who have the phone. It is open source. And based on open source AOSP as well.
#2 I no longer have BraX2 so if you're asking about BraX3, there is no case yet for that but for BraX2, someone made a custom case for it on Brax.me

#4 yes I use it as a hotspot

I'm not suggesting you're wrong, but rather asking for more info, and/or saying that it's a viable option for some people who could get by without GApps at all and who don't necessarily care about 100% sealed perfect privacy, particularly if it's from the govt which is harder to avoid and not as much reason to avoid (I know that is up for debate, but less-so in developed areas like NA/EU)

@@robbraxmantech Ok thanks 👍! I would constantly see a message saying that the connection to the server has timed out! And I just recently discovered that there are 4 apps installed on the device that aren't from the Google Play Store but I personally have never installed any apps that weren't on Google Play Store! What I did discover while it was in recovery mode is that the version of the software is KIEV which is Ukraine ! The BL/Baseband/Product/Variant all day KIEV but the UFS :128GB Samsung and Dram: 6GB Samsung and the OEM: locked / Tools Mode Config: Disabled on a Motorola phone! I have noticed the same similar things on both of my last two cellphones! My Gmail account would let me receive a certain amount email notifications per day and my phone app would only notify me of a certain number of missed calls and a certain number of calls from each of my contacts as well as text messages also! I have watching and subscribed to your channel since this first really notice what was happening with my phone and I even to back to T-Mobile where I bought it for and even they didn't know what was going on but all they recommended was to factory reset my device and was totally against it because I was going through a important Court case and all of evidence of pictures/emails from the courts and lawyers and legal documents are on this device as well as text messages and my call log information and call history! What do you think cause this to happen and can I do to prevent this from happening ever again? I'm in getting a DeGoogled phone or buy phone and have you change the OS for me! Im a huge Sony phone supporter that is my favorite brand I was with them before Samsung became a household name the cellphone market! I had this happen regularly to me a lot. I don't know what I did to fix it, or if possibly the system just changed something or managed to register me as less suspicious.

At least in my case you can also check your message a minute or less after posting to see if it's still there (by either editing it, or clicking on the "x [time] ago" above the comment and beside your name. I am not sure that I fully understand the question though I respect that English is probably not your first language.
I do not trust any product by Apple, Microsoft or Google - and I do not like mobile devices for proper computing tasks.
I run (Gentoo) Linux on all of my computers, including a small Thinkpad X220 that goes everywhere with me - if I need to do computing then I sit down with a coffee and just do it.
On my mobile devices I only run Lineage OS with no Google on them - I have multiple "burner" phones and multiple identities, plus I have no social media accounts anyway.

Well, you don't really have to go that far.
Just living below your means will identify you to the system as a "loser," because you will not be getting richer over time with "goal-setting." (Telemarketers and scammers will continue to target you because of the assumption that, "poor people are stupid.") Pretty much the idea is to become disregarded by the corporate powers that have turned the public who they're supposed to be serving into products who corporations can suck money from on a regular basis.
Essentially, you state by your actions that, "I'm not donating because I have no money."
A few conditions though for this to be an option.
It's handy if you have avoided incurring debt; or resolve to never borrow anything ever.
It's also handy if you take advantage of public donations to help the poor - but this can get complicated depending on your situation, especially if you're male.
The trickiest part is staying away from getting harvested into the jail system - don't entertain yourself with vices. This will reassure real people that they will not be "wasting" their support of helping you when you need help, (you WILL get into some sort of legal or bureaucratic trouble, because this process is designed to gain money from those in your poverty category.)
