Here's my thoughts. Get your first 5 ounces in fractional gold (any mix of halves, quarters, 10ths). That way you have small pieces that you can sell in small amounts if you need to. Or barter with in the worst case scenario. The rest you can get 1 oz coins. If you really like fractional gold, you can keep your eye out for good deals, or maybe trade in a 1oz for "change' and pay a slight mark up to the LCS.

I personally like having both fractional and 1 oz coins. I believe they’ll both serve me well in the future. Fractional in that I can liquidate a bit at a time as needed. The 1oz if I have a much bigger need or want.

You can get a lot more ounces if you wait a few weeks or even a few months. I hear lots of folks on TH-cam badmouthing the foreign stuff, but I’ve never had a problem selling it during a peak in spot prices. ✌️

Mainly Sovereigns, 1/4oz and 5g bars. I don’t buy from online dealers so I’m not paying those super high premiums. Coin groups on Facebook allow for smaller premium purchases. Great points, it's expensive stuff the fractional. We're lucky in the UK that sovereigns tend to have a similar premium to 1 oz if you're buying multiples... If I weren't in the UK I'd probably stick to 1 oz
My 2 cents. I think you pretty much nailed everything including the diminishing returns too much to the upside. For gold to me there’s are few sweet spots. 10gram bars, half ounce bars. Coins one ounce, quarter and tenth is the smallest gold. 5oz on the upside is optimal and as you pointed out the 20gr bars.👍

I refuse to go under 1/10 but I always shoot for 1/4. I do believe gold will go up in time and premiums will be taken care of.

This is why I always measure over spot as a percentage.
Using dollars over spot is deceiving and doesn't properly measure deals.
Buying on oz's is always the best buy. But ..in a economic collapse . Fractional gold is best especially during barter situation .

Fractional bars are often cheaper (in $ per oz terms) than 1 oz coins. 20 gram bars (0.643 oz.) seem to be in a sweet spot.
I see people buying and selling 1 gram bars all the time, rarely do see other sizes except 1 oz.
Are not the break away just the same price as an once since you do buy the bulk once or two of them .
It’s not about what you spent on it it’s how much your going to sell it for later
