    I've noticed a lot of male vtuber models are, to be quite frank, overcompensating on musculature. It's usually not that the head is too small, it's that the torso is too big, which then makes the head look small since most of the time all the viewers see from a model is the upper torso and head.

    I always assumed the exaggerated body proportions of male vtubers were based on yaoi art styles, especially the long chins, and large elongated torsos/hands.
    I could be wrong, of course, but I think elongated, pointy triangular chins were a pretty common physical feature in BL, at least historically (although BL art styles are way more diverse now).
    I would prefer more realistic proportions, personally, but the art style must appeal to someone because male vtubers keep adopting it.

    As a freelance audio engineer for over a decade, using a compressor or limiter in software will only prevent peaking/distortion if you're adjusting the volume in software as well. What most people have issues with is distortion that occurs in the audio interface itself, usually by setting the volume too high.
    My recommendation for OBS users would be to set their audio interface volume quite low, so that even when you yell, it doesn't peak or distort. Then, in OBS, set a Noise Gate filter to block out any ambient background noise your microphone is picking up, followed by an Upward Compressor filter to bring the volume back up to listening volume. Specifically, it'll only raise the volume of quieter parts, while keeping the volume of louder parts unchanged (such as when you yell etc.)
    If you want to get fancy, you can even link Compressor filters together so that, for example, your game or BGM audio will automatically lower in volume when you talk, and return to normal volume when you stop speaking. That way you don't need to worry about your voice being drowned out by loud game audio.

  • @WhoIsRec
    @WhoIsRec 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

    Many moons ago I went to school for audio engineering so maybe this'll be helpful:
    One handy thing to know about audio on TH-cam, if you're setting a brickwall limiter for your audio so you don't peak (hardware or software), try to set it so that you don't go above -1db. TH-cam & most streaming platforms (even Spotify) like to try to normalize audio a lil bit & if it sees you're encroaching on 0db it'll sometimes compensate by turning down the entire audio channel on the viewer's side.
    Mari's 100% right on compressors being your best friend - pairing it with a gate is also very handy too if you have a lot of background noise you'd like to not bleed through constantly as well. Just make sure you figure out the db level of your noise floor so that you're not cutting out your own voice with it as well lol.
    Audio's a bit of a deep topic, but you're on TH-cam already, there's tons of tutorials to find here haha

    The male vtuber proportion thing is super valid! A lot of male designs seen very... Jojo's-esque? There's something to be said about the masculine ideals there.
    Though what's even more curious to me is legs! Ive seen both male and female models with legs that are far taller than the torso and its just kinda strange to me, like. Though I guess that comes across far less often, as most vtubers just show their upper half most of the time.

    • @niicespiice
      @niicespiice 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      i'm not actually bothered by legs as someone who draws them long. i just generally like how longer legs look. and yeah, i think there's a hyper-masculine idealisation thing going on. kind of a random example but the same thing happens with charcacters from project sekai and it looks SO weird when the male characters are next to the female ones because the PROPORTIONS ARE SO DIFFERENT 😭

    • @Carbon_GM
      @Carbon_GM 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      True, to each their own when it comes to stylistic choices. There's probably something really thoughtful to be said about the psychology of it all, but I don't have that kinda degree.

    • @singithi8556
      @singithi8556 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's not hard to imagine unaware en vtubers unintentionally chasing the *female gaze* without being aware of it, when you see all the other big successful male corpo vtubers following the macho design trend and follow it themselves. That earlier comment in the video about 'yaoi art styles' is very on-point.

    • @s_factor_sam
      @s_factor_sam 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Leg length isn't always equivalent to torso.
      I'm a man and my legs ARE longer than my torso.
      My arms are also abnormally long and I have proportionally long fingers.

  • @signalgirl3563
    @signalgirl3563 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    One thing that I've noticed when trying to design myself a male vtuber model is that there often aren't great references for proportions. For instance an actual picture of a man often proportionally doesn't match up with what people want stylistically. I typically lean towards cuter designs anyway so once i gave up on making a super manly looking male vtuber it was easier for me to make an actual design I liked. But overall it is very hard to find good examples of proportions because real people often don't match the style people want and so many existing male vtuber models fall into those proportion issues that you mentioned.

    As a former people pleaser, the advice for toxic friendships is on point absolutely important to learn and a boundary one needs to learn to set for any relationship period.
    There're also going to be people who will go out of their way to disrespect you. They'll become a bigger drain of your time and energy. Some people you gotta teach them how they should treat you. If they're rude, talk behind your back, talk smack to your face you don't even need to talk it out. Just block them move on. I know it feels like a harsh move. but people can be selfish and it's a very selfish world in reality. Save your energy and friendship for the people who show they do deserve it 😊

    You're not wrong about male models, but it is a little funny. Let's not forget that SO MANY female models have huge heads compared to their bodies, or have huge booba. I'm not saying this in an argumentative way, rather just that there are tons of ways that models are disproportionate in vtubing. But also, I do think that a lot of artists, or at least anime-style artists, have a lot less practice drawing men. I've heard it so often that they have a ton of skill with women but virtually none with men.

    • @CallMeTeci
      @CallMeTeci 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Dont. Probably disappointing, but it makes no sense to do that. You wont gain anything from it and probably just make the audio worse that way.
      Everything the microphone needs and what is usually part of an interface is already build into any USB mic, bc otherwise it wouldnt work. (duh! xD )
      So either use the USB mic as it is or you have to buy an XLR mic to use with the interface. Sorry. :I

      @chrisvighagen 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Im sorry you ended up in this situation.
      If you have a good usb mic then that is all you are going to need for your voice audio.
      On the interface, if you ever plan on taking audio from something else, like an old game console then the interface will come in handy. Or if you want to capture audio from a musical instrument.

    Audio engineering major here! I'm graduating with my degree in one week! I haven't tried streaming apps yet myself, so I don't have suggestions for settings there, but you could look into limiters if you're yelling a lot. Compressors actually reduce the dynamic range of your mix (how loud the loud things are and how soft the soft things are), but it depends on what settings you use. For example, you can set up a ducking compressor for things like reducing the loudness of background music whenever you talk. Focusrite is a good decently priced audio interface, and if you want something high-end, you could go for an interface by Universal Audio. I can vouch for the UA Apollo Twin X Duo being really nice.

    1:20 I think they call that the ikemen style? It's also probably popularized by some east Asian beauty standards ex. Korean standards of having a "small face" which means like good proportioned /balanced face that is characterized by having a pointier chin and an overall "cool/ handsome/ athletic" look for men and "pretty doe eyed" look for girls. So, about 10 months ago I cut ties with a friend group whom I had known for 5 years, and it was one of the hardest decisions I ever made. I won't bore you with a long story on how we met or all the adventures we had. All you need to know is we met back in 2018, and we have been hanging out for years afterward. What started was a friendly Minecraft smp whom I was hyped for and helped spent so much time helping prepare. We even set a date, time, and who was going to be on. When the time came I waited over an hour only to find out that everyone started without me. When I told them I was hurt by this, they brushed it off like it wasn't a big deal, then later cornered me acting like they were the victim because they were offended that I brought up the subject.
    I did my very best to reason with them, tried to talk it out, and even apologized for my actions. However, they never apologized to me, got offended easily, called me a freak, and even treated me like a parasite for months afterward. Honestly, it was all one-sided. I eventually concluded that they no longer see me as a friend, so I cut them off without saying much. Now don't get me wrong, they weren't always like that, but some people just change over time and may take you for granted for always being the nice and supportive guy.
    I eventually got over it, and now I am even more happy that I have new friends who are supportive and even more reasonable to work things out.

Allows a decent amount of audio balancing but also lets you apply a decent eq, noise gate, noise reduction, and compression to your mic. Can then use its output for obs, discord, in game voip, etc. so you sound the same across everything.

    For new Audio Interfaces it might be worth for at least europeans (dunno about USA) to take a look at Thomann which currently celebrate their 70th anniversary and cut down many prices lower than i have ever seen them before. Among them Focusrites Vocaster Interfaces, which are currently dirt cheap there and are great basic interfaces that offer a very solid audio quality AND a Mute-Button. Im using the Vocaster One and cant complain. That thing is 45€ there atm and thats a steal. (Its usually price is around 100€, with occasional dips to 70€)
    It doesnt have a build in audio separation, but for that exists "Steelseries Sonar". :D

    ya i get chu on the 1st topic regarding to Male Vtuber design.
    back then how i envision a male version of Kizuna Ai [backthen vtuber is not a thing yet].
    would be be something like a standard shounen spiky hair character from the 2010 Era.
    But what surprise me is when Vtuber a thing, its resource become more accessible and more Male Vtuber starting to pop out. most of the design is either what you describe, they are either very K-pop ish inspire, Kirito Clone, or more or less velubtous pec smol head, sharp long chin like anime Character from the 80', or you could say from the early 2000'.
    not kidding try search that up most male character from the 80' look like that. Big upper body and looooooong sharp chin.
    despite the trend I am still a proud pointy hair design from the 2010 XD
    a hybrid design inspire from Kingdom heart nomura art style and Law of Ueki.

    When you ask the question "why do male vtubers get shown with a smaller head, broader body, and pointy chins" it's most likely because there is an over abundance of male anime characters with those exact features.
    Look at Ouran High School host Club. The Majority of the males have "smaller" heads compared to their broader bodies, the younger male characters have more rounded chin, and the female that looks like a male has a narrower body and a bigger looking head.
    Look at Full Metal Alchemist. Mustang looks like he has a smaller head than Riza.
    Look at Dr. Stone. Look at Evangelion. Look at My Hero Academia.
    Males have broader bodies, and it makes their heads look smaller.
    Males tend to have pointier chins.
    Male VTubers have that aesthetic because anime tends to have that aesthetic.

    About the name of your Monday vids, you could combine both ideas into "Ask Mari Mondays"
    The only reasons I can think of for male Vtuber models to have a long chin, but small head compared to their bodies, is because:
    1) The model could be making up for something the dude using the model lacks irl, or perhaps the artist who made it is. It might sound harsh, being said like that, but it's true.
    2) Either the person behind the model, or the artist, has never studied irl anatomy before, & only learned from watching anime with unrealistic buff proportions...
    Or 3) They think it'll make them stand out more, make them seem older, & possibly be more attractive to hetero females, or gay males. It's the same concept of why female Vtubers who have unrealistically huge bewbies choose to have them that damn big: they want attention & more viewers, & they think that's the way to do it.
    Also, what retro games do you like? Anything Zelda or Final Fantasy related? I'd love to see a list of games you enjoy playing!
