@@Cafewatercolor You bet! Been subscribed to you for quite a while. I really should take the time to stop by more often. You give excellent instruction and demos.
I just stopped after Chien. That was some of the most profound and liberating words i've ever seen about producing art. I need a minute. Edit: okay I made it through Evansen and have to stop again! Edit2: Made it through the end! Thank you for producing such a thought-provoking video. And especially thanks to these masters for sharing their insights!
Excellent job! Inspring and eye-opening thoughts. I especially like the recap you did after each sharing from the masters. So precise and comprehensive! Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to new painting from you.
Thank you, Eric. I have learned so much from your videos. A few years ago, when I first Subscribed to Café Watercolor, you were teaching painting figures and you said something like: never paint the head round, unless you are painting Charlie Brown. That hooked me on your videos and I have watched and learned ever since. A great teacher inspires and finds ways for students to remember lessons. This video is another that I will watch over again. Very interesting, thought provoking and inspiring .
Thank you for this wonderful, interesting and insightful idea 😊 And thank you for sharing. I also appreciate these artists for sharing their thoughts. They all have interesting thoughts about this topic, and to hear them presented together makes it even better, because you get to reflect on things in a different way. I’m am still a beginner that has a lot to learn when it comes to painting techniques, so that is where I am on my journey, but to be able to have this collection of insights following me along on my journey as I develop my skills is such a gift.
I thoroughly enjoyed your video and all the amazing interviews, especially the woman who didn't want to paint like her husband. I love her soft colors and florals.
Thank you Eric - this was well thought out and I know took a lot of your time to put together for your viewers. Enlightening and helpful! I think it's possible to love and appreciate someone's style without desiring that style for yourself. Thank you also to each of the amazing artists who agreed to interviews or answered your questions - I think that reflects their mutual respect for you.
Eric, this was a thoughtful idea that you came up with. The interviews were inspiring as much as their art, and answered a lot of my own questions about style. Kudos to you for a job well done.
Wow! Thank you for putting this together. It’s very inspirational to hear from these masters. I was surprised (and glad) they all have similar consistent advice we can follow.
I like how Jasmine is the only one to go out of her way to develop a style, but also not really, and in doing so effected her husband's work. She started in 2014 and she went for a soft loose look. If we look at the example you put up of Chien's work at 3:07 time stamp, the later piece has her elements in it. Softer edges, more analogous colors. She started painting like him, intentionally moved away from that, and now he's painting like her. I just love it! I'm definitely share this with my artist friends. I've been actively trying to not worry about style and I think I know a lot of people this could help out. Thank you so much!
Eric, I so appreciate and am impressed by this undertaking and the work you put into it. It is valuable to hear the artists themselves. You asked a good question, what are we passionate about. These artists and you confirm and encourage us to be true to ourselves and work hard! It is good to hear those realities. Thank you, again, very much for your helping all of us out here in artist-land!!😊
Wow Eric. Thank you for this. You said you have done complete interview with all these wonderful masters? I will absolutely keep my eyes on your channel to have the chance to listen to their thoughts. This is absolutely formidable that you speak mandarin (I guess it is mandarin?) and thus can share the thoughts of masters like Chien and Jasmine. Especially Jasmine from whom I’m not sure there is much about her in English (I admit she is one of my favorite, she is quite a huge tree growing beside her husband and it is a rare feet to accomplish that while being always compared to Chien, she is very strong to do that - and even more admirable - and has a genius of her own I think). Thank you Eric, so glad you are there to translate all these “hard to reach” oriental masters from whom there is soooo much to learn.
Excellent Eric! Thank you for sharing your conversations with these wonderful artists! I’m 56 now, and still learning so much! I’m using my non-dominant hand (right; previously left handed; due to an injury to my left hand.) I t’s always pleasant and encouraging to see your videos!😄 And hello from another Eric!
This is a very nice video. I'm glad you put it up for everyone to discover every artists style. I also noticed in watercolor groups on Facebook they are trying hard to find their own style. This video is worth sharing.
This is a great answer for all my students who ask how to develop "personal style." Some actually become depressed about it. Love some of these comments. Best one: You have to play a lot in order to play like yourself.
Oh my, this is so appropriate for me as I'm on that path of developing my style and what I want to say and represent with my art. I just started to take plein air seriously and it has helped me so much. Each of the interviewers have key elements that surprised me too! Thanks for the interviews, Eric.
If we break it down, we look out into the world, then we internalise that outlook, we then copy and merge what we have seen. The combination of our successes and failures with that process becomes our style. You don't find a style, a style finds you. It is like with music, most successful bands were trying to replicate something, and their style was the failure to replicate that thing. Nirvana may be one of the best. But I am confident they weren't aiming to be that. Those successes and failures in trying to replicate something else resulted in that Nirvana style.
Great Video Eric its outstanding as you have mastered the knack of not interrupting the person you are interviewing, but listening. A lot of people that professionally interview people on here ( no names), always interrupt and spoil the flow. Well done good video JF
Wow, just wow! You spent an enormous amount of time--energy--thought on this amazing video. Brilliant, inspiring, appreciated. Many thanks, both to you and all the other artists.
I have been watching videos re watercolours and my eye is gradually attracted to a particular style of painting, amongst them is you, Joseph Zbukvic, Michael Soloyev and Thomas Schaller who was once an architect.,Nitin Singh and Prakashan Puthur. All have that same confident, dexterous fluidity in loose paintings. There are others but too numerous to mention. But particularly Japanese art which also embodies a philosophy, Zen.
thank you, Eric. your channel is a beacon for admirers of watercolour. Joseph is a giant, I'm blown away every time I see one of his paintings and he was the one who got me hooked in watercolor. I'm such a beginner, but eager to learn more. hope you can get a proper Joseph interview sometime soon. regards, from Brazil
What a great video Eric. So much of wisdom packed in a 20 mins video. I appreciate you for taking time to interview all these great artists and putting their advice together. Awesome
Thank you so much, Eric, for the excellent work you have done here! It is so inspiring and a great guidance from the masters! It is so nice to hear and see you again with the deep wisdom you share.❤❤❤❤❤
Great idea to take workshops from artists who paint in a way you wouldn't want to paint yourself. I think that's another fun way to learn and get to know yourself as well as the medium. :-)
This video is fantastic Eric thanks so much. It’s so inspiring to hear from master artist such as these. Also so great to see women included in your research. Thanks you for that also!
New subscriber here from Texas ❤ Thank you so much for taking the time in interviewing these people and sharing their thoughts and expertise with the rest of us. What a gift you have given us.
Thank you I remember a painting of yours. I remember the cat, along a cliff road. I looked at it 2 yrs. ago. I think you were traveling and this was an impression you depicted. This video really speaks to me. I am at a cross road with my work. I may be distracting myself with too many subjects, stories I want to tell through watercolor. I began in 2021 so am in early stages though been an artist all my life.
Great thoughts! I’ve heard a lot of similar ideas from all these masters in different words. So it’s really cool to have the opportunity think of the style from several super-valuable perspectives. Thank you! I have to sleep on it 😊
Love this VDO and your work . Especially your youtube work which is as good as you painting you did. Thks for great VDO and idea . Not just the painting tutorials even though I really enjoy it 😊
Such an enjoyable video! Love your interview style and the different artist voices you've shared. I feel refreshed and inspired by the passion and dedication to digging deeper and and expressing fully. One of my favorite quotes is from Artist Chien Chong Wei: "My ambition and taste will always be ahead of my achievements." I'm looking forward to the full interviews!
I appreciated the comment about plein air being about the fundamentals. It makes one really become so familiar with how to formulate paintings on the spot. So true. For me since I do more indoor painting that plein air is a treat and gets me out of a rut and I find the escape necessary to just paint everyday. 😊And good for Jasmine! A comment about style: everyone signs their own name according to their own style and no one signs it like you so why would I choose to change my particular style? It may change a bit over the years but it is still my style so why worry about it?😊
Eric, love your channel! And this episode! It serves as an inspiration. FYI: I'm 77 and retired. Finally, I have time to find my personal style in watercolor! Cheers, Joseph
Thanks so much Eric for this ! It's so inspirational and eye-opening, I have been following your channel for long and I always appreciate much for your sharing, and now you even take a step further so we can also learn from other great artists too. Chien and Jasmine are also the artists i admired so much , especially after my relocation to Taiwan 2 years ago and have more chances to get close to their masterpieces, you know how this has surprised me when seeing them in your videos ! By the way, I didn't know that your chinese is so good.
Thank you thank you thank you! I loved school so I’m a life-long learner always seeking & absorbing. It’s wonderful to learn more differently. No idea how what I learn will affect anything in my life but that’s the fun.
Fantastic video, Eric! One of the best art-related videos I have ever seen. Very unique topic, truly mind-blowing insights, and oh so inspiring. I know I will be rewatching this one over and over, there are just so many gems in it. Thank you so much for this video!
Wow! What a wonderfull 20 minutes, it felt like 2 hours. I enjoyed every second of it. Wise words i will take with on my own journey. I also got to see artists that are new to me. Thank you
Amazing stuff, one of the best videos you ever posted, such profound thoughts and concepts from such huge masters, and so revealing and immensely inspiring, I am also on the search or development of ‘my style’ and this has definitely changed the way I think of it now, thank you so much
This was an interesting and helpful video, Eric. You asked a great (though difficult to answer specifically) question. I often feel so disappointed in my result. Painting consistently seems to be one key to improvement, and letting the watercolor “fly” (I.e., not trying to over-control) should help move me forward. As they say, nothing will change if you keep doing things the same way. Wish me confidence and boldness.
Wonderful question for the modern masters to answer! Good job 👏 For me it is not “hard work” but joyful and meditative to be able to paint. But I am not a professional. I do sell my work regularly, but don’t have the pressure to sell to pay the bills. I would agree that lots of “brush miles” let the individual artist’s style come to the forefront. Ps When I see a painting style so obviously copied from a modern master I wish they would give them credit.
it's an interesting and crucial topic ; personal style is what we should aim to but I think that every artist has to get at best the knowledge of the watercolour technique before trying to build a personal art view. To achieve the knowledge we should study hard 🎯
Świetne ciekawe komentarze .Do nich dorzuciłbym Corneliu Dragan .Dla mnie najlepiej pasuje Zbukvic .Zgadzam się że trzeba wypracować własny styl .Dziękuję z filmik.
