Both me and my husband are gifted. Just starting our new shaman journey but it’s hard for him to learn all this because he doesn’t know hmong word much. Is it ok if I perform this ritual for him? Plus for the design can we do something different from our parents/caj ces or we have to do the same design as them?
Congratulations for both you and your spouse!! Walking the path of being gifted isn't as easy as it may seem. Many who have walked these paths will struggle yet only show their success. This path is neither a curse nor blessings and requires endless team work. Keep in mind that Xwm Kab is optional and is not a spirit of wealth like many have mistaken to be. It's main purpose is to watch over and take charge when you allow it. Some shamans chose not to have one but for the majority who does, will realize how much hidden potential it has. You may make a Xwm Kab and guide your husband in what to say then he can repeat it after you. If he's not comfortable then wait and allow your husband to have the honor of establishing one. Preference is to have the male or Head of the household to established a Xwm Kab to help manage the ancestor of your spouse's last name. As for females to make one, it really depends on the ancestor's approval. Unless you're a full fledge shaman, then best to leave it to the men. As far as the pattern goes, it depends, the reason why many don't tried to change it is because the Xwm Kab may dislike it, and it may lessen its effectiveness. Making things pretty in our physical world doesn't mean it may appear the same as in the spiritual side. If you do change the pattern, slowly do so to see if it does have any negative impact. Shamanism is a practice of what works best and have no permanently guidelines. For many centuries ancestors shamans have done many trials and errors to lay out a foundation for rest to follow untill they advanced into their own accords. My suggestions for all beginners, best to learn and not change anything untill they fully understood what they are doing but do keep an open mind and explore what works best. That's usually the proper way. First complete the Xwm Kab, then call upon the deceased elders to dine so they may take away or remove the misfortunes and also help watch over the family. But some families rather called upon their deceased members first to dine in before renewing their Xwm Kab (Ancestor's altar). Calling upon the deceased family members to eat is optional and it depends on that family's practice. Some only called upon their immediate family while others may call upon their great ancestors. Most people forget to burn some joss paper money to their ancestors after welcoming them to dine. Usually a list of the names of family members were made so no one has been forgotten. Helping the deceased may also benefit the living as well as they may act as guardian angels around the family even though they are not visible to the naked eye. But always remember to tell them to leave your house and return back to their rest area after they done eating and received their joss paper money.

Depends on what kind ritual you are performing, the meanings may change according to that specific ritual. Normally, you should ask whoever taught you those words to begin with. Here are the usual meanings of the words: Xab = #3, Create, Death Lwm = #2, go around Theej = replace, duplicate Fiv= informed as promised Seem = side view, extra Swm = used to or normally Xab theej mas kuv yuav fiv seem = Replace it 3 times and I will promised with extras. Lwm theej mas kuv yuav fiv swm. Replace it twice and I will promised like normal. Overall, it basically means that if things were done accordingly at a satisfactory level, I will repay back with more rewards. If NOT, then the rewards in return is nothing more than usual.

Yes, it is the same. Back in the old days, we Hmong used to speak Hmong Leeg (Green) but as we migrate from China, we have changed our words and dialect into Hmong White so the Chinese wouldn't recognize incase they pursue us. After hundreds of years, we have forgotten that we spoke Hmong Leeg to begin with. Even Hmong Leeg still have to learn from Hmong White when it comes to some funeral rituals especially, the spell or enchantment to unlock the Fengsui of graveyard sites at cemetery. In summary, Xwm Kab is same for all Hmong, just that some family does it a bit different due to their own beliefs.

For example: 1st set is for Txhiaj Meej (Guardian) to be in charge of wealth so their savings may grow. 2nd set is for Pem Xeeb (Magical Tree) to be in charge of good harvest and farming. 3rd set of feathers is for Los Yej (Wise Old Man) which is in charge of education and making wise decisions. Some place 4 sets of feathers because it represent 4 lines to remind them of 4 goals in life; "Xwm" means #4 while "Kab" means lines, therefore it represents 4 goals they must achieve within that year. While others place 4 sets of feathers which represent the 4 House Guardians (Xwm Kab, Txhiaj Meej, Pem Xeeb and Los Yej). Those who have more than 3 sets may have other hidden agendas while some have no idea but just for looks.

@@hlee1391 Very good question. Xwm Kab's main purpose was summoned to help guard and protect the Husband's side of the family and wife. Even if the woman is a widow or divorced, she will still need one of her son or spouse's relative who is a male to create the Xwm Kab. Unless the woman is a shaman, she may do one for her family representing the spouses (Husband) side only. Because of this, the Hmongs in the old days who had no son would rather adopt a son to perform these ritual in times of need. But once the Xwm Kab has been established or created, the woman of the house or anyone within that house may still burn paper and seek shelter under it. I hope this answer your question.

I agreed with you...not many will question such. Xwm Kab was made as captain of the household to oversee everything in the spiritual side along with managing the ancestor spirits. Because the man of the house represent the ancestors while the wife is an outsider from another family, it makes more sense to have the Husband of that family be in charge of his own Xwm Kab and ancestor instead.

Both me and my husband are gifted. Just starting our new shaman journey but it’s hard for him to learn all this because he doesn’t know hmong word much. Is it ok if I perform this ritual for him? Plus for the design can we do something different from our parents/caj ces or we have to do the same design as them?
Congratulations for both you and your spouse!! Walking the path of being gifted isn't as easy as it may seem. Many who have walked these paths will struggle yet only show their success. This path is neither a curse nor blessings and requires endless team work. Keep in mind that Xwm Kab is optional and is not a spirit of wealth like many have mistaken to be. It's main purpose is to watch over and take charge when you allow it. Some shamans chose not to have one but for the majority who does, will realize how much hidden potential it has.
You may make a Xwm Kab and guide your husband in what to say then he can repeat it after you. If he's not comfortable then wait and allow your husband to have the honor of establishing one. Preference is to have the male or Head of the household to established a Xwm Kab to help manage the ancestor of your spouse's last name. As for females to make one, it really depends on the ancestor's approval. Unless you're a full fledge shaman, then best to leave it to the men.
As far as the pattern goes, it depends, the reason why many don't tried to change it is because the Xwm Kab may dislike it, and it may lessen its effectiveness. Making things pretty in our physical world doesn't mean it may appear the same as in the spiritual side. If you do change the pattern, slowly do so to see if it does have any negative impact. Shamanism is a practice of what works best and have no permanently guidelines. For many centuries ancestors shamans have done many trials and errors to lay out a foundation for rest to follow untill they advanced into their own accords. My suggestions for all beginners, best to learn and not change anything untill they fully understood what they are doing but do keep an open mind and explore what works best. Can you explain why aftet doing the su ka, why we need to call our ancestors to come and eat. Is it necessary?
That's usually the proper way. First complete the Xwm Kab, then call upon the deceased elders to dine so they may take away or remove the misfortunes and also help watch over the family. But some families rather called upon their deceased members first to dine in before renewing their Xwm Kab (Ancestor's altar).
Calling upon the deceased family members to eat is optional and it depends on that family's practice. Some only called upon their immediate family while others may call upon their great ancestors.
Most people forget to burn some joss paper money to their ancestors after welcoming them to dine. Usually a list of the names of family members were made so no one has been forgotten. Helping the deceased may also benefit the living as well as they may act as guardian angels around the family even though they are not visible to the naked eye. But always remember to tell them to leave your house and return back to their rest area after they done eating and received their joss paper money.

Depends on what kind ritual you are performing, the meanings may change according to that specific ritual. Normally, you should ask whoever taught you those words to begin with.

Seem = side view, extra
Swm = used to or normally

Yes, it is the same. Back in the old days, we Hmong used to speak Hmong Leeg (Green) but as we migrate from China, we have changed our words and dialect into Hmong White so the Chinese wouldn't recognize incase they pursue us. After hundreds of years, we have forgotten that we spoke Hmong Leeg to begin with. Even Hmong Leeg still have to learn from Hmong White when it comes to some funeral rituals especially, the spell or enchantment to unlock the Fengsui of graveyard sites at cemetery. In summary, Xwm Kab is same for all Hmong, just that some family does it a bit different due to their own beliefs.

@@isaacyang6337 Feathers are optional but usually it's only 3 sets to begin with. Each set of feathers have a purpose. Planting feather is like planting seeds so it may flourish or bloom like a tree. For example: 1st set is for Txhiaj Meej (Guardian) to be in charge of wealth so their savings may grow. 2nd set is for Pem Xeeb (Magical Tree) to be in charge of good harvest and farming. 3rd set of feathers is for Los Yej (Wise Old Man) which is in charge of education and making wise decisions. Some place 4 sets of feathers because it represent 4 lines to remind them of 4 goals in life; "Xwm" means #4 while "Kab" means lines, therefore it represents 4 goals they must achieve within that year. While others place 4 sets of feathers which represent the 4 House Guardians (Xwm Kab, Txhiaj Meej, Pem Xeeb and Los Yej). Those who have more than 3 sets may have other hidden agendas while some have no idea but just for looks.

Xwm Kab has always been done by men unless a woman is a shaman. Women can still use the enchantment to help boost their blessings.

@@hlee1391 Very good question. Xwm Kab's main purpose was summoned to help guard and protect the Husband's side of the family and wife. Even if the woman is a widow or divorced, she will still need one of her son or spouse's relative who is a male to create the Xwm Kab. Unless the woman is a shaman, she may do one for her family representing the spouses (Husband) side only. Because of this, the Hmongs in the old days who had no son would rather adopt a son to perform these ritual in times of need. But once the Xwm Kab has been established or created, the woman of the house or anyone within that house may still burn paper and seek shelter under it. I hope this answer your question.

I agreed with you...not many will question such. Xwm Kab was made as captain of the household to oversee everything in the spiritual side along with managing the ancestor spirits. Because the man of the house represent the ancestors while the wife is an outsider from another family, it makes more sense to have the Husband of that family be in charge of his own Xwm Kab and ancestor instead.

Even though women can not do Xwm Kab, but they may still tie or hung their shirt under the Xwm Kab and seek shelter or protection from it. They can even do so to their spouse or children in the house so as long as they burn atleast 3 joss papers to the Xwm Kab paper or altar.
