I homeschool my 8 yr old son. He is autistic. His pediatrician was all for it,but his developmental specialist was against it. So was his speech therapists. He started public school at 3 yrs old and seemed ok. At 6 yrs old, I decided to homeschool because he started to cone home very angry and stressed out. He cried every single morning, kicking and screaming all the way to school. Once I started homeschooling him, he turned into a different kid. He is so much happier and calm now. And very loving. He is doing very well in his school work. He alsp doesn't need speech Therapy anymore. I took him to a follow up with his developmental specialist last month and she was in shock. He is very high functioning now. She expected to give me referrals for him, but said that he no longer qualified for anything. She kept saying she couldn't believe that he is the same little boy from last year. I cried when I left, because so many people told me that I was wrong to homeschool him. But I had to do what I thought was best for him. It meant going from 2 incomes to 1 income, and giving up a lot of extra shopping and spending lol. But we adjusted well. We are definitely not rich, but we have everything we need and more. God has always provided and I know in my heart that he has answered so many of our prayers 🙏 Our son is proof of that. We are a Hispanic family and typically in our area, most people don't homeschool. They do have a lot of misconceptions about it. But I will continue to do what is best for our family. I love your channel! Thank you for talking about issues like this. God bless you and your family ❤️

a misconception came at me from an unexpected place recently. our church has a small private school attached to it, one my children use to attend but i had to pull them out because they weren't equipped to assist my child with disabilities. i wanted to sign my girls up for their sport teams, knowing they were short on players and my girls wanted to play. my senior pastor told me they couldn't because homeschoolers don't ever get out of their pjs and he didn't want my kids showing up in their pjs. he also said that they wouldn't get along with the other teammates. i have no idea why these things were eaven said. my kids go to church there multiple times a week wearing day clothes and interact with these kids that are on the team just fine. made my kids feel less then and my mama's heart was hurt for them.

I'm planning to homeschool going forward for many reasons. My kids are thrilled, actually. My son was making up excuses to go to the nurse or leave the classroom on a daily basis. My daughter was crying and begging to stay home every night. She would say,"But why do I have to go? School is so boring. We just sit on the ipad all day, and everything is always exactly the same!" I've always said that I wish I could homeschool, but it's gotten to the point where I HAD to figure out how. I wish I had done this sooner because now the three of us will have to unlearn the things public school has taught us (as far as what education should look like, expectations, and so on).

My brother and mom who both went to college for teaching said that teachers are just trained for classroom management. (Some are worse than others). If you want to learn how to manage a circus then there you go. Now my aunt became a teacher in the early 90s. She is super good at math. She quit and was failing to teach her high school students. She makes way more money managing retirement plans and happier. So that is some food for thought about needing a teaching degree.

My biggest conception with homeschooling was I thought I had to 1. Homeschool them the same hours/same schedule as school and 2. I can't work AND homeschool. I am a mom of 3 - 9, 8, and 7. I am getting ready to homeschool them and I work from home full time and am a single mom. Their last day of public school will be friday Jan 13 2023. We are all looking forward to it and my kids have actually been asking to be homeschooles for a while now so we are taking the plunge! Excited for a new beginning and journey! Also my oldest has a learning disability so I am excited to know i can slow down where she needs it and not rush her 😊

I am always hearing about homeschool kids who defy the stereotypes. But unfortunately my kids are one of the "weird," "socially awkward" homeschool kids. But I was like that too, even though I went to private school my entire life. So going to school does not mean you will automatically be good at socializing. I just wish I could see more examples of homeschoolers who happen to be one of the "weird" ones, but I understand not wanting to reinforce the stereotype.

Hi! We've been HS our daughters for 3 years now. We're in Texas and the regulations are very lax, which I appreciate so we can really tailor to their needs/goals. I'm white and my husband is black and we are raising 4 beautiful daughters. The main reason we pulled them from public school is the lack of ethnic curriculum and it's only gotten worse since because schools can no longer recognize black history month or discuss important events in black history (Tulsa Black Wall Street massacre, MLK assassination, Emmitt Till lynching, etc...) We both teach, I lead the more "academic" activities and my husband is teaching Cherokee, indigenous history, spiritual development amongst other things. Love the freedom we have!

When i used to school until like 14 y.o. i would be home at 1pm, started going to school at 7. I find it sad seeing kids coming home at 7 pm.. tired.. drained.. I just dont want that for my child. If I ever have kids, they absolutely will be homeschooled. Yes, I am a Christian but I went to public school and thought nothing of it until recent years. There were some things they taught me as a kid that I rejected because they were contrary to the bible (earth's origins, Darwinism, etc.) but for the most part public schools weren't teaching me anything wrong. What they teach kids NOW though?! They take it way beyond that. They are no longer "public schools", they are government indoctrination camps. They are taking out good, knowledgeable teachers who loved their kids and replacing them with political activists. MY reason for homeschooling will be simply because I don't want my kid brainwashed.

Colleges know that home schoolers are great students - self-motivated, engaged, etc. My sisters and I had no problem getting into college - funnily when I went to a top school for my graduate degree a TON of the other graduate students had also been homeschooled. Here ppl in the outback homeschool due to travel times to the city!!! It’s. Common thing here!!! I agree that my kids behave better now they are out of school and when I was a pre school teacher it was harder to nip things in the bud at work as they was more kids and also they wasn’t my kids so I didn’t know know what their parents expected!!! I did at kindergarten placement and the “school” time in the classroom was 40 mins and the rest was play based learning!!! Growing up I lived in Singapore for 14 months and I homeschooled and we where in a Christian co op and an non Christian co op!!! I didn’t pull out my kids due to faith reasons but I’m glad I get to teach my kids in a Christian way!!! When I was a pre school teacher we worked alongside the parents as much as possible!!! The parents taught the kids as well!!! Yea we helped them out with it!!! In Singapore I was 16 and my parents worked!!! This helped us to see that we could both work!!! I have a dyslexic kid doing a homeschool pre med course and she was failing school!!! When I homeschooled I wore jeans and a denim jacket often!!! I didn’t know it’s a thing tho!!! Idk my background but mainly pacific islands and Australian!!! My kids love homeschooling!!! In Germany ist’s illegal to homeschool last time I heard!!! "Myth" #1 is completely true. Please cite the studies you are referencing. You also only compare to public schools in broad generalities, what about private school? You say your kids hang around other age groups, but that isn't socialization; learning to interact with different people that don't think the same and are from different backgrounds is socialization.
"Myth" #2 - In the real world, you don't get to work at your own pace, life is full of deadlines that have to be meet. You also have to show up at work and meetings at specific times and learn to balance and keep a schedule. School is training for the real world, and homeschooling provides a distorted perception of what the real world is actually like. Also, if kids need extra help, you do still have the option to work with them at home after school.
Education level does matter when it comes to teaching a subject matter. Normally one has to first master a subject before they can teach it. If I don't know how to do something, I go to the experts, not those that have failed at something or never accomplished it; does anyone go to homeless people for financial advice? Coops do not solve this problem because the only required qualifications are for one to profess expertise rather than demonstrate it. Sorry, you can teach Calculus if you don't understand it yourself. If you aren't well versed in proper grammar, how can you possibly grade an essay? Teaching isn't reading from a script, it's understanding the subject matter that you're teaching and then explaining in a way that it can be easily understood.
Much more to say, but I'll leave it there for now.

@prairiepatriot2162 you have to download the studies. It's a pdf... paste "studies on homeschooling and socialization" on Google... it will come up and you can read up on the studies. It's actually fairly easy to find with a simple Google search if you really want to know about it.

@@lifewithginab I did look into those studies, at least the first few. If you read the studies, not just the results, they acknowledge that their studies are flawed primarily because the sample sizes are too limited (geographically) and they are based on self-reporting. This reinforces what I've been saying that success is measured by outcomes produces and should be taken correctly into context.
Many public schools are bad for reasons that go far beyond just academics, many are just terrible, some are ok and few are truly good. Not all private schools are good either, although most parents won't pay for a worse outcome than they can get for free (public schools). The same can be said for homeschooling; it is possible to do well, but the truth is most parents aren't equipped to do it well. We should be realistic about the shortcomings of homeschooling and when looking at the benefits/drawbacks, they should be based on outcomes produced; after all, the purpose of schooling (p-12) is to prepare kids for either college or work.
For those that work in "corporate" environments, the social aspect is critical beyond simple qualifications where usually a bachelor's degree in the desired field is the minimum requirement for entry whether that is marketing, accounting, or finance. If one lacks social skills, they will likely not likely interview well, and this can be problematic with landing that first job in a competitive labor market. With respect to advancing, the social aspect becomes far more critical; usually the people promoted are the ones most liked, not necessarily the best people.
Building a network is also very necessary for having an 'exit strategy' out of a bad company and hired into a better one. Homeschooling does not expose kids to different kinds of people, and therefore they don't learn how to adapt to those environments where they have to get along with those that think differently and even be interviewed by them. Building connections with people may very well be the most important aspect in career growth. This is where I have most often see homeschooling fail kids; they just don't successfully build those connections with the people that they need to in order to get them to where they want to be and are usually pigeonholed into entry level jobs.

My why..3 reasons. 1 keep religion way from my kids. My public school was with a lot of god kids and it was horrible. I realized I was wicca and was great. 2 I don't want my kids to socialize in a negative way..we only participate in a social activity 1 or 2x a month. 3 medical issues we have compromised immune systems and have hard core anxiety issues.
I unfortunately don't have any freedom because of so much stuff I can't control or fix.
My teen goes to public school because I personally can't. get so mad when homeschoolers that do not know me or my life and try to convince me I can😠..not helpful just upset to the point of depression.
I do not teach how my kids learn, I personally feel that is hindering them. This is because the world will not make adjustments for them they must adjustments themselves. Proof very much after their fathers motorcycle accident. We is adjusting with medal rods and pain.. he can't do his dream profession any more, he was a very good Simi drive passed road test in a snow storm with best score ever in the school(not bet to this day)..

I really dislike when someone trys to convince someone to homeschool because they think they know what's best for your kids. I'm sorry you go through that. Homeschooling is a personal decision, and you do what's best for your family regardless of whether it's putting your kids in public school or homeschooling. Unfortunately, there are some homeschool families that cross the line with their opinions as well. And it's not okay. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and awareness! ❤️
