지난 2018년 12월, ‘서울, 여기’라는 자작곡으로 데뷔한 R&B 싱어송라이터 CITI(시티)는 ‘Switch’, ‘Be Your Light’, ‘Closer’에 이르기까지 자작곡을 연달아 발표하며 특유의 감성으로 리스너들에게 뜨거운 사랑을 받았다. 특히 작사, 작곡뿐만 아니라 편곡과 프로듀싱까지 가능한 다재다능한 싱어송라이터로서 22살이라는 어린 나이에도 불구하고 폭넓은 음악성으로 주목받고 있다.
CITI의 이름은 ‘City in the I’의 약자이다. 그의 곡에는 ‘도시(City)’라는 삶의 배경 속에서 펼쳐진 모든 이야기들과 감정이 ‘나(I)’의 색채로 그려져 있다. 누구나 겪을 수 있는, 그러나 ‘나’의 이야기. 그의 노래에 듣는 이가 쉽게, 그러나 깊게 공감할 수 있는 이유가 바로 그의 이름에 있는 것이다.
이러한 CITI가 오랜만에 들고 온 새 노래, ‘오늘 하루만’은 마지막으로 발매한 ‘Closer’ 이후 약 1년 만에 공개되는 곡으로, CITI의 감성이 철저히 담긴 감성적인 R&B Soul 음악이다. 이번에도 역시 CITI가 직접 작사 작곡에 참여하였으며, 지금까지 선보인 음악 중 가장 CITI다운 음악이다. ‘CITI다움’은 깊이가 있으면서도 세련된 곡의 분위기와 슬픔이 담긴 가사에 여실히 묻어난다. ‘오늘 하루만 내 곁에 있어줄래, 더는 날 사랑하지 않아도’. 떠나려는 연인을 붙잡으며 오늘 하루만 곁에 있어 달라고 애원하는 가사와 그의 목소리 자체에 그가 표현하고자 하는 감정들이 진하게 배어있다.
CITI가 처음으로 직접 출연한 뮤직비디오는 양유리 감독이 메가폰을 잡았다. 서로 엇갈리는 시간 속 남자와 여자의 이야기를 담은 이번 뮤직비디오는 이별 직전 남녀의 마음이 엇갈림을 시간의 엇갈림에 비유하여 표현하였다. 서로의 생일이 같아 함께 ‘우리의 생일’을 축하하며 ‘우리의 시간’을 보내던 영상 속의 연인은, 시간이 흘러 이별을 앞둔 채 각기 다른 장소에서 ‘각자의 시간’을 보내며 서로 엇갈린다. 악보와 악기 등에 휩싸여 음악 작업에서 벗어나지 못한 채로 여자를 혼자 내버려 둔 남자는 뒤늦게 그녀를 찾아가지만 사랑을 원했던 그녀는 더 이상 그 자리에 없다. ‘사랑해달라던 너가 이젠 없어.’ 노래 속에 펼쳐진 드라마가 영상 속에 섬세하게 구현되어 CITI의 음악과 세계관이 더욱 선명하게 드러난다.
한편, CITI는 그동안 유튜브 채널을 통해 방탄소년단의 ‘Dynamite’, 크러쉬의 ‘자나깨나’ 등 다양한 커버 영상으로 실력을 입증해 왔다. 국내 가요부터 해외 팝송까지 다양한 곡들을 자신만의 감성으로 소화한 CITI는 대체불가 뮤지션의 면모를 보이고 있다. 또한 지난봄, 베일에 싸여있던 얼굴이 공개되어 훈훈한 비주얼로 화제를 모으기도 했다.
