I'm doing livestreams everyday. Mainly starting at 6/7pm PST but it just depends on what's happening in my life: www.youtube.com/@ScottHebertArt/streams
There's this quote in a song "why worship legends when you know that you can join them". And I love it because it like a phrase of I know I will practice and going enough to become that amazing painter I want to be. Like it's so strong in my head that'd it's not a question of will I, it's a question of when, and what do I have to grind to get there.
My excuse use to be, I don't want to waste materials so I just won't paint. Now that i bought a lifetimes worth of supplies I find myself looking for other excuses. This is a great video!
I started painting 25+ years ago and I don't plan on stopping any time soon. Money comes, but not much and not quickly, so it's been a meager living....but it's been an amazing life. Paint on brother!
I struggle with starting a part, like I’ll have a hot streak where I’m painting everyday or I’m just in the zone. Then suddenly I’m in a rut I cannot make myself start either the next one., or even finish the previous. Is bad but I know I just need to do it , see what happens. It’s always scary painting at times bc you’ll look at the painting and go “oh my…that’s rough but process! Process will pay off” Seeing your work is truly inspiring, I now want to get more canvases. Usually what makes me do anything is the aspect of “if I give this to someone, I can do it” I should learn to paint for myself and not focus on “what will they like” and more of “let’s do what I want to”
Interesting. I have the same conversation with my friends about the "this sucks" and being too hard on myself. I don't think I am at all. I'm just on a journey to mastery and excellence, and I can objectively recognize when it isn't. Keep doing you- you've got a new subscriber :) by the way, I'm about to finish year two of art every day... keep going!
Man don't stop , you are excellent unique and very #%##ing great . Beautiful ...Keep following your calling . I am on this path too , as an artist with music paying my bills ...Thank you bro !
You are honestly so impressive! Thank you for sharing these learnings and CONGRATS on the journey and the incredible accomplishments you've already got under your belt. Kudos to you. You're probably the most grounded artist I've "met" ever. And it's definitely paying off!!!
Incredible insight bro. I’m already blown away by your output! Can’t wait to see what day 1000 looks like’ That painting with the girl with the torch? Man. Incredible! Keep going and thank you for being an inspiration! 💪
I'm so glad I ran across your video. This past month I have started the same journey because I have such a hunger to LEARN. Art has always felt like its called out to me, but now approaching it full of zeal, its beginning to *speak*. It's such a serious thing for me even when it looks like I'm just wasting my time to others. I admire you placing yourself in that same position of discipline! I can't wait to follow alongside your journey and see you reach your own goals! ❤
My gosh - your person is amazing and it comes through your work so beautifully. You are inspired and inspire me too! I’m getting a late start but going to pursue excellence too- to see what it’s like to be all I can be in this commitment. Thank you. Would you ever show us your very first work? Yes some of them I used a projector to transfer the original image but I use it more like a blueprint for where things need to be and draw on top rather than treating it like a coloring book. But lately I’m phasing it out and switching to just drawing right on the thing
A transition from when you first started to where you are now that kind of transition. I’m sure it’s cool even for you to see. Where do you get all your subject matter?
how many of the things you paint are from your own photos? Im trying to take a multi-pronged approach. So i do black and white photography because just seeing the values helps me with composition but I shoot B&W jpegs and save a copy in RAW so i can goof around with colours. so then very tediously i try to edit my few selected photos to have colour harmony like this one I’m tuning so its more blue and orange complimentary. those references I try to paint somewhat photo realistically (obviously with some artistic choices like softening some lines while keeping compositionally important ones crisp). And these paintings i do in layers - maybe using grisaille or maybe a limited palette or …. But I find parts of this process tedious and end up working in small sections (like today im just painting that hand) whereas painting the whole thing all at once is more fun to me. so i’ve started going to weekly life drawing sessions - pay a small fee to be part of a group drawing a live model. Time is limited and results are just for practice with no real expectations - so its just for the fun of art. Im hoping to try and take oil paints to these sessions one day and have a stab at alla prima portrait painting. My theory is that i need to work on different techniques and approaches at the same time and also work on different aspects - like focussing on composition and figuring out what the painting expresses and what types of settings people are in etc. like im betting on it being good for my growth to simultaneously work on both near-photorealism and also on how to convey something with the fewest number of brush strokes possible. “If your job is doing what you live, you will never work a day in your life.” This old saying is completely wrong. If your job is doing something you love, you will eventually hate what you do. God gave us all our own free Will. Let God lead your life. I believe your doing a good thing, most artist aren’t recognized until after death, even the masters.
if you spend >1hr a day painting, how much time do you spend prepping canvases and varnishing stuff and deciding/ lining up what photos to paint and, i dunno, thumbnailing composition or whatever? or is that part of your 1hr - like its just time dedicated to the hobby. Im sorta trying to spend hobby time every day but if I’m burnt out from real job then I can do something more mindless like mixing paint for colour charts or something
This is a person who exhibits what is a very 'real' talent...; so, therefore, why not choose to nurture it to the max. ;-) However, for those people who are far less 'talented'...; then, I think, it's a hell of a lot harder to commit to such long term goals. When one finds oneself outputting 'endless disaster after endless disaster'...; then, of course, this is NOT in the least bit encouraging.
Hey man! Your paintings are good, I like your skill with the medium. Yea you’re a pretty good artist and I’d be happy to hang one on a wall in my little room, but they are um kinda boring and feel unoriginal. Painting beautiful girls and women are a dime a dozen and you’re Style although done well is also not all that exciting, but you certainly have the talent and work ethic to become very good, now great imo “I don’t know”. That first one reminds me of Mucha or even Klimt but I consider them extraordinary. There’s about 100 world famous for eternity genius artist and we all know them and another 300 are stupendous and we all know most of them and that’s it.
I remember old videos around 2 years ago. First set of cards with veggies. You came really long way. In my opinion you could do some shorts to get more subscribers/views. Algorithm boost channels if you do it right.
yep mindset is everything when it comes to art, and being an artist can be selfish and also lonely, im not saying artists are the typical emo loner trying to create their masterpiece and are broke doing it, wearing rags and sleeping on a mattress on the floor😝 they can be of course, but its def hard to be a 'normal' creative person and try to keep up appearances of being a 'normal' interactive person in the world and do all of the things people expect in a life, when all you want to do is go draw something 😛 and you have a plan for your paintings and you def have the potential to be great, and age never matters when it comes to art and when someone is dedicated to creating🥰
"oh this sucks".. when i paint and am involved, all kinds of thoughts run thru my brain. like a never-ending movie. I have learned to accept those thoughts as a confessional. (I am not religious or catholic). the other side of my brain lets me know, you did this. you said that. you believe. you don't believe.etc. it's like opening pandora's box because that is the only time i let her out. so i say to her, yes you speak the truth but in my defense, this is my penance. (that's way to religious sounding) but much cheaper and probably more educational than a $ 200-an-hour psychiatrist with a pick axe. practicing your art is cleaning out the attic and filling it with better ideas. very nice paintings. technique is so important. you can turn this education into $ by widening your subject matter. like commissions, and galleries of course but the subjects will probably need to be less personal. maybe add elements that tell a story. maybe one apple or a bee sting or a storm on the horizon, a storyline from a myth or current event. a twist or hook. keep it up.
Honest and constructive criticism: you are over blending your flesh tints, and using the same kind of light and palette, over and over again…. Look at Jeremy Mann and other figurative painters, and break up your brush work a bit. You are working to a formula which is great, it means you have fundamentals, but if you really wanna step up a level you need to start taking some risks, explore your mark making and different palettes. You want to be throwing out at least half your work, and not varnishing it all. You also need to start thinking about your subject matter and painting pictures that aren’t just ‘picturesque’ but that speak to something deeper than just ‘I am painting pretty pictures competently’… You have everything you need, a work ethic and solid fundamentals. If you really want to break through find a way of making pictures that tell us a story we haven’t seen before, something that is absolutely about your actual lived experience, not what you think people want to see, not even what YOU want to see, but something true to your life experience. Start at work, would be my suggestion. A self portrait with your streaming set up in it, painted in halogens and neons, rather than ambient light? Paint it from life, using a large mirror, rather than a photo? Good luck man, it’s an amazing project.
Could say the same about mark carder, you probably know him. Dude is seriously successful. Stevenrufini3515 mate, you don't have a clue. And whose photographs are they? It's called good reference. How the f are you supposed to be out on location hiring models and painting outdoors when you have to work full time and edit the videos and everything else. There aren't infinite hours in a day.
I'm doing livestreams everyday. Mainly starting at 6/7pm PST but it just depends on what's happening in my life: www.youtube.com/@ScottHebertArt/streams

Algorithm boost channels if you do it right.
damn, yeah that feels forever ago now. Thanks for coming on the journey.
started at 34? Inspiring
yep mindset is everything when it comes to art, and being an artist can be selfish and also lonely, im not saying artists are the typical emo loner trying to create their masterpiece and are broke doing it, wearing rags and sleeping on a mattress on the floor😝 they can be of course, but its def hard to be a 'normal' creative person and try to keep up appearances of being a 'normal' interactive person in the world and do all of the things people expect in a life, when all you want to do is go draw something 😛
and you have a plan for your paintings and you def have the potential to be great, and age never matters when it comes to art and when someone is dedicated to creating🥰
I don't get it?
Test your stoic mettle
@@ScottHebertArt Looking good brother!
(that's way to religious sounding) but much cheaper and probably more educational than a $ 200-an-hour psychiatrist with a pick axe. practicing your art is cleaning out the attic and filling it with better ideas.
very nice paintings. technique is so important. you can turn this education into $ by widening your subject matter. like commissions, and galleries of course but the subjects will probably need to be less personal. maybe add elements that tell a story. maybe one apple or a bee sting or a storm on the horizon, a storyline from a myth or current event. a twist or hook. keep it up.
Put your reps in every day mate.
You also need to start thinking about your subject matter and painting pictures that aren’t just ‘picturesque’ but that speak to something deeper than just ‘I am painting pretty pictures competently’…
You have everything you need, a work ethic and solid fundamentals.
A lot of interesting stuff here but some of it comes across as pretentious to me
That’s all good, you’re welcome to have that opinion.
You slavishly copy photographs, theres no expression.they are banal! A lot of work for what they are!
none of this is true but I appreciate the feedback
Could say the same about mark carder, you probably know him. Dude is seriously successful. Stevenrufini3515 mate, you don't have a clue. And whose photographs are they? It's called good reference. How the f are you supposed to be out on location hiring models and painting outdoors when you have to work full time and edit the videos and everything else. There aren't infinite hours in a day.
rock on
