Dubstep Addict this is exactly where I'm at right now. I love cars but I want to know how they work and my grandpa is giving me a car to restore so I need as much knowledge as I can get
You probably won't learn anything at school anyways. I been watching youtube videos, I wish I had a engine laying around I could play with. I could probably learn to rebuild engines if I had one I could work on. Obviously can't just go yank the engine and work on my daily driver lol.
It blows my mind that once upon a time a group of people somehow decided to add these tiny pieces of metal and physics to create an engine. The thought process into building one today seems simple but for people to actually make one of these for the first time ever is one of the greatest feats of knowledge mankind has ever witnessed. Amazing.
Tesla tires are still made of oil, the lithium in the mines are gathered using diesel and gas engines, then transported with gas or diesel, and probably charged with a coal powerplant. But the Tesla doesn't burn oil so we pretend that doesn't count.
My dad was a mechanic but he didn't teach me about engines. This video is very useful and easy to understand. You should do a video where you take an engine out of a car, strip it down and rebuild it to show how everything works connected together
My dad was no mechanic, but he still used to fix the car. I remember it often being a horrible experience with him working late evenings and even shouting at the car from frustration. Thank you for the great video and for hopefully inspiring thousands to grab a socket set and get to work in an ever decreasing generation of mechanically inclined adults. Thank you!

After seeing these parts in engine illustrations and 3D animations, it’s really great to see the actual parts of the engine covered in oil. You filled in a lot of gaps and answered questions for me. Thank you so much
OMG thank you so much for explaining this in an easy to understand format without dumbing it down too much. I was married to a mechanic for 9 years and never learned a thing. He would start throwing out a bunch of car jargon without explaining how each part works and how they work together so I gave up and just let him fix the cars. So here I am trying to save money by doing stuff on my own and learning it from scratch. I just learned more in a 32 minute video than I did living with a mechanic for 9 years. Thank you so much! Thank you Eric, I have gone through my entire life wanting to learn about engines and how they work, neither my father nor my brother have ever agreed to teach me about them and considering I'll be driving the until I die, it's something I HAVE to know. I appreciate your time you spent going through each part and explaining them and the subtle differences compared to other variations. Thank you and keep on doing what you do.

The love for the overall mechanics and engineering behind the process shows in your expertise good sir. Thank you for this absolute gem.
Got to say that I started a short college course on maintenance and the instructor of 30 years experience recommended Eric the Car Guy. I already learned with one watch, and intend to binge watch several videos a day until I've got this done. THIS is the kind of teaching that makes the internet and youtube the first stop for additional lessons and being able to watch and re-watch Eric until it's soaking in. Eric, you're the man!
You my good sir are amazing and made one hell of an educational video, i learned more here in 30 minutes than i have in years. I really want to say thanks for making this content to teach an amateur like me the basics. May God bless you and reward you in this life and the next.
I was ignorant before this video. Now I know sort of how things work. That makes me happy. I'm still more into how firearms work mechanically. Somehow it's similar though.

i have to say i am a huge fan, man. Been watching your videos sparatically for the last couple years. But this past week i was out of work for 5 days dues to a surgery and ive been watching your videos all day and night. You've got a ton of knowledge and a great way of explaining things to the layman that really cuts through more than most of the other channels out there. I just bought my daughter a 2004 honda accord sedan and am going to be pimping it out a bit for her this spring. You have totally inspired me to make a video series on her car upgrade process. I'll be sure to link you in every video i make in my makeshift mini series . Going to be tearing out the interior, kilmatting everything, replacing speakers, adding some budget powered subs, maybe some interior lighting, new headlights, light painting on the trunk, new rims and tires, as well as a full tune up of the engine, valve adjustment, fluid flushes, etc and a full engine bay detail. spring cant come quick enough. Super excited. Thanks to you for the push forward in the project.
I literally just watched this 30-minute video for two and a half hours and I can't believe that it was made 12 years ago thank you for the knowledge information... I paid close attention and it gave me a lot of knowledge hope and confidence for my future working on my vehicles!!
i am a mechanical engineering student and its my finale semester .before i always study books and some equations and also theory but i was not satisfied .but from this video i gotta lot of information .even i see by practical all the parts .so at the end i will say thanks Mrs the car guy.thanks.
I'm currently in school right now for automotive and repair technician. after watching Eric the car guy videos. wish i could work for him. he's so knowledgable. I've learn so much from his videos becuase he actually shows how its done. thank you eric. up here in alaska, its impossible to find a shop to help you learn hands on.
I've been interested in the mechanics of an engine for over a decade, and I've been asking questions all this time, trying to learn. These are the fundamental answers I needed. Thanks man.
Being a meager backyard tech, I know enough to get by doing my own repairs. And what I don't know I can learn when I need to. Great video. It explained a great deal more than I knew. Mostly by connecting the dots between parts and parts of parts. I understood what the big and main parts do, but now I know more about how they work together. Thanks Eric!
Thank you so so so much. You have made my life so much easier and better. My brother is a mechanic. He eats, sleeps, and breathes cars. I will sometimes help/watch him in the shop, and just hand him tools, and help him find things. (He has a really messy work space lol). I have always tried to keep up and understand what he is doing. Cars have always interested me as well. I am fascinated by them, and I want to learn about them. This video has done just that. It explains the engine on a level that even an idiot like me can understand. It’s simple, and cut-to-the-chase. I love it. Everything is so clear now. You are a lifesaver man. Thank you! 😁🙏🏼

Ingenious device= ENGINE, fantastic stuff and never knew that, also meaningful comments about the inefficiency of all mankind’s Engine efforts, well said Eric
i swear some people just go through youtube downvoting videos without even watching them. We can understand how engines work but we will never understand how people work.
+Coco Chen probably is I live in Texas, usa not all but there's a good amount of schools that have automotive classes. However theyre optional not mandatory and by everywhere
You mention at the end of the video about the inefficiency of internal combustion engines. I've always thought internal combustion as a primitive technology (it really is if you think about it) We're talking technology about 150 years old (basically) that we just keep trying to improve. I sometimes think it's one of the biggest dilemmas of mankind, as far as moving into a new age. Look at an electric motor, it's about 90% efficient, but then again the dilemma, the external source to spin it (most likely an engine/generator or some kind of spent fuel). A battery could spin an electric motor, but ask yourself, "Where did that energy come from, that gave that battery its charge?" Most likely an engine/generator or some kind of spent fuel.
Yeah, it's had a pretty good run, and there are some (relatively) high-efficiency examples, like the giant turbocharged 2-stroke diesels on ships, but I can see why there's so much interest now in electric power. One moving part, no oil changes (a big environmental issue in itself), and efficiency commonly exceeding 90% (permanent-magnet AC motors).
I think in time it will become something for enthusiasts and nostalgia buffs, the way steam power is now - there's plenty of fun to be had with classic machinery. And much respect to people like Eric for sharing their knowledge!
always amazes me how much abuse the parts of an engine actually take over the course of the engines life span and still function. yes, things can be rebuilt and replaced, but i would say the average person does not maintain an engine the way it should be, and it generally will still work. i recently had a clutch linkage housing( not sure that is what it is called) fail after 18 years and it was just made of plastic. the number of times that clutch pedal has been stomped had to be approaching 2 million. i know some people say things now days are engineered to fail after a given time, but i am not sure about that. a combustion engine with all its precision and minute tolerances is a work of art to me. kudos to the people who design them and to the people like you who repair them.
Im a 67 year old woodworker. Havent done much mechanic work. However, i have done a good bit of teaching. Your teaching job was well done!! Especially in the time frame. I feel as of i can talk automatic shop now👍

Hey teach. Im 40 years old and really got nothing to show for. Just recently started taking an interest in learning about auto tech because I got tired of getting screwed at the shops. I really want to say thanks for making this content to teach an amateur like me the basics. May God bless you and reward you in this life and the next.
I was ignorant before this video. Now I know sort of how things work. That makes me happy. I'm still more into how firearms work mechanically. Somehow it's similar though.
I feel you dude, I'm the same way. I've been into firearms but I'm trying to learn more about cars.
@@jordanhoward5272 Oh, man. Fast forward three years and I'm my own mechanic. Hell, there was a period of time Iived off of money I made from doing people's brakes and such.
It's been quite the journey.
@@cwheels01 oh shit congrats bro. I am 19 and a high school dropout and I have just started learning about cars. Hopefully I could learn more about cars and turn it into a trade and possibly start building my dream car, an E46 M3. Cheers
I feel like I can smell your garage through the video
Is that is fake
That was fun want to take it off the head valve spring all the head bolted to block
My hands getting greasy now
Mmmmmm.... Gasoline....
The baby noise scared the crap out of me.
Amazing vid btw, very useful. Will be disassembling my mum's broken engine tomorrow for fun. Now will know what is what.
+tim funk Nice spelling.
Yes because the internet is American by nature right? don't reproduce you stupid fucking embarrassment.
i have to say i am a huge fan, man.
Great video man, thank you. I'm a professional aerospace engineer and it's great for me to be able to see stuff like this.
screw the guys who are mean to you, eric... i think you are awesome, and the best car guy out there :)
+icyburger People were mean to him?! He is the most laid back mechanic on youtube lol
Who hurt you?
"Wanna see a piston being born?"
*baby cries*
LOL
+Colin Donovan I thought he actually woke up a baby for a sec., hilarious
+heisenberg LOL got me too!
+Colin Donovan
Yeah It looked like that :D !!
+Colin Donovan i lost it in the midst of the library laughing at that bit!
Colin Donovan I was waiting for the "after birth"... Some disgusting, oily sludge to spill out of the cylinder following the piston! SO GROSS!
Mrs the car guy lol?
Arthur Romanov hahah just a mistake :p
1989 toyotA celica firing order
The baby crying sound effect when the piston came out was funny
I wanna be an electrical engineer but this is cool too!
Go electrical it's the wave of the future
Hydrogen cars I the future I think.
im about to graduate in mechanical engineering, but ive had way more fun in my electric classes (its cheaper too lol)
Hydrogen cars won't be feasible until all cars become computer driven and have 99.9% action avoidance, hydrogen car accidents scary to think about
MyDeskTopFilms I didn't think about that lol
there would be a 1/2 kiloton detonation every time someone cuts of a motorbike
I'm currently in school right now for automotive and repair technician. after watching Eric the car guy videos. wish i could work for him. he's so knowledgable. I've learn so much from his videos becuase he actually shows how its done. thank you eric. up here in alaska, its impossible to find a shop to help you learn hands on.
This so great..
I laughed when the piston was being born.
Tada
Like the way you explain the engine you could be a great lecturer or teacher keep it up
This video makes me more motivated to learn about car's engines. Thanks for the video.
#respect
I've been interested in the mechanics of an engine for over a decade, and I've been asking questions all this time, trying to learn. These are the fundamental answers I needed. Thanks man.
It's very interesting how engines work, being a technician is my dream job.
Think of the camshaft as the spinning note in a music box that affects how the bristles make different sounds
Thank you! 😁🙏🏼
I'm currently like 1 minute into the video and I'm like dam this guy knows cars
Over the past year I think I've found my dream job. I want to be a car mechanic.
With barely my eyes open here at 7am, I stumbled upon this video and didn't get bored or confused for even a second! TH-cam uni at its finest 🤙 thank you!
...now to get up and follow the smell of coffee. 🤤
Dont ever stop what your doing Eric, your one of the most easy to understand, informative channels on this platform. Not only that but you've been here for as long as I can remember and for as far as I can see, haven't sold out to those get rich quick marketing scams that have absolutely destroyed TH-cam.
Ingenious device= ENGINE, fantastic stuff and never knew that, also meaningful comments about the inefficiency of all mankind’s Engine efforts, well said Eric
Btw...239 dislikes? What's not to like?
ZerokillerOppel1 Could be the honda haters?
elias savoie well that makes 23k dislikes 😂
Ungrateful bastards
i swear some people just go through youtube downvoting videos without even watching them. We can understand how engines work but we will never understand how people work.
The professors and teachers wanting to make thousands of dollars only teaching a fraction of what he shared in his videos.
+EricTheCarGuy
Sometimes you sound a lot like Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs.
+The Armed Apostate Eric's voice is lower than mine. Oh, wait...
+The Armed Apostate I though it was more like Hugh Lauries voice from house.
Absolutely a brilliant yet casual explanation of a fuel engine (yes, not a motor!!). Thanks very much.
Why don't they teach us this in school instead of the bullshit they do
Exactly. Half the shit we do in school is useless.
+Harry Dick my school does
+IMALIQ what school is that? I wanna know, and is it in America? Just curious.
half? more like almost everything
+Coco Chen probably is I live in Texas, usa not all but there's a good amount of schools that have automotive classes. However theyre optional not mandatory and by everywhere
A great video as usual Eric. Thanks from the UK.
A battery could spin an electric motor, but ask yourself,
"Where did that energy come from, that gave that battery its charge?"
Most likely an engine/generator or some kind of spent fuel.
Windmills
23:51 is literally my face trying to understand this awesome video.
Hahahaha 😂😂
Same tbh. Im so interested but confused from all the little parts

Need help? :D
"that engine started off as a water pump" haha
yeah, he meant the rotary engine seen in Mazda Rx8
exactly
Holy fuck the baby crying scared the sht out of me, was not ready for that.
Im a 67 year old woodworker. Havent done much mechanic work. However, i have done a good bit of teaching. Your teaching job was well done!! Especially in the time frame. I feel as of i can talk automatic shop now👍
This video is amazing, you should do a more recent one, maybe with a v6 or v8 turbo.
IceInMaWeiner they practically work the same tho.... same components but different piston configuration. But as to the turbo, yeah If he doesn't have a vid on how they work he should do one
23:48 terrified oil pickup is terrified
he saw some shit in there
You're the Boss, Eric.
Thank you. Ohh you mean EricTheCarGuy
Well that's awkward..
Not sure if anyone observed this, but his voice quality is top notch ! Amazing! Thank you for doing this video. I learned more today than any other day
I like to think of him as the "Mike Rowe" of cars 🙂
Speaking of water pumps ,,, how do you feel about rotary engines?
high maintenance, and use a lot of oil.
Rotaries are shit !
8:52 if you don't have equal length headers, then you get a sexy subaru boxer growl :) (and a huge loss of horsepower and efficiency but hey it sounds cool)
50 horses man I like the boxer rumble but 50 horsepower is too much to give
How THE FUCK!!!!!! DID I ONLY LEARN ABOUT THIS GUY NOW!!!!!! seriously this content is worth a million dollars. Condense this into a DVD. And sell this shit. I'd pay hundreds. Amazing work.
Wanted to say this guy is very thorough and knowledgeable. Super appreciative for Eric's demonstration and teaching perspective and knowledge!
