The Battle of Walcheren Causeway (Operation Vitality) was an engagement of the Battle of the Scheldt between the 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade, elements of the British 52nd (Lowland) Infantry Division, and troops of the German 15th Army in 1944. It was the first of many conflicts on and around Walcheren Island during the Scheldt battles. It was also the second major battle fought over a terrain feature known as the Sloedam during the Second World War.

Well I know this battle actually happened and was portrayed in The Forgotten Battle movie. And so I asked the same question I did watching then:
"WHERE'S THE ALLIED ARTILLERY SUPPORT?!! THE GERMAN LINES ARE PRACTICALLY IN THE OPEN?!!!"

Exactly. In th actual battle the third attempt to cross the Causeway was made at night, with a creeping barrage of 25-pounders inching forward over the causeway. Major Bruce McKenzie led his "D" Company of the Calgary Highlanders behind the barrage, secured the roadblock at the western end of the Sloedam, and the rest of the battalion formed a tenuous bridgehead. Couldn't do it without the artillery.

The German 70th Division was known to be a weak formation with old men having stomach ailments and hearing loss injuries. The decision was made to land on the western side of the island, but if the causeway on the east side could be "bounced" - taken in a lightning move - it would cause a reasonable diversion to the landings. The decision was sound enough but as so often happened, fire support was not great. Tank support was not possible due to cratering and the Sloe Channel was too swampy for assault boats (though 52nd Div found a better spot to cross, once time for reconnaissance had permitted).

In the actual battle, the 5th Brigade's 3-inch mortars and the divisional 4.2-inch mortars were all used.
