      I did what you said bought it as a console but I’m enjoying learning about the settings. I’ve always been a console gamer so it’s nice to mess around, I got Skyrim running at a solid 60 after spending around five hours at 30 by adusting the graphics and it feels/runs great.

    About the haptics! Linus from LTT reached out to Valve and asked them why they decided to omit a actual rumble motors, and the steam deck team at Valve said that they considered it, but cut it for battery life related reasons, strong haptics use a lot of battery. The haptics are advanced it's just using that anemic one under the trackpad

  • @kiseitai2
    @kiseitai2 ปีที่แล้ว +89

    The cool thing is that Valve made key tools accessible to help you optimize the experience to your use case. The battery life, for example, can be improved with FSR, lowering graphics settings, adjusting refresh rate to 40hz + locking fps to 40, and power available to the APU. It’s crazy seeing all of the improvements to Linux coming together in a cohesive manner with Valve’s direction and touch.
    This is, for me, the spiritual successor to the PSP. Love it!

    Great review!
    I've had mine for 2 months and agree with everything you said. I use mine primarily for my retro gaming and it's fantastic. I bought a 45W Samsung charger and a 3m long usb C to usb C so can sit comfortably and charge it if needed. I also bought the 16000mAh magnetic battery and magnetic bracket which fits to the Steam Deck from Amazon, when I got to 10% battery I plugged it in and it took it to 100% and gave me an extra couple of hours on top before it died and i still had 100% battery, I could charge my external battery while playing... when Steam Deck gets to 10% my external power bank is charged again (using the 45W charger) and rinse and repeat!!!
    If you haven't got a Steam Deck, get one!

    After some tweaks it runs at a buttery smooth 60fps.
    No i didn’t buy a 700$ machine to play older games BUT to have a library of retro accesible games alongside the modern stuff, the Deck runs most of your cooking cutter AAA games.

    Most thorough, honest review of the SD. I totally agree -- Valve has, in the past, been hit or miss with their hardware -- Steam Controller (miss), Steam VR Head set (hit and miss - quality but expensive), but the Steam Deck is a home run. You want easy, "just use it" for the non-tech savvy... the Steam Deck OS provides that, you want to get under the hood, stretch the devices out with other apps, linux software, etc. you can do that too. From novice to the power user, Steam Deck can accommodate. I truly am just amazed by this little device. And, indeed, the warts are fin noise and battery life (could be longer), but these are overshadowed by the capability, build quality, and overall enjoyment.

    • @doublevendetta
      @doublevendetta 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There's a lot of us that WILL hard disagree with you calling the Controller a miss. It is still to this day my second-favorite controller device that I own, behind only my HitBox as a massive fighting game nerd, and is in my opinion objectively one of the best controllers ever made when you look at everything it can do, you just need to be able to wrap your head around it which was the struggle that most people had, myself included for at least the first month-and-a-half after I bought it

  • @jamesharvey44
    @jamesharvey44 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Considering that I only get 1.5-2.5 hours with a switch (game and network status dependent), getting 1.5-2 hours of Far Cry 5 or ESO I feel the battery life is reasonable and on par with a higher ended gaming laptop on battery. The APU in the Deck is significantly more powerful than the Switch's APU so I expected some reduction with demanding titles.

    Very nice review. I just got my Steam Deck a week ago and I agree with everything you said in this video. I learned about a lot of new features as well. In terms of batter life, here are some tips to get more time before you have to charge the Steam Deck. If a game can run at 40 FPS without any problem (something like a turn based tactics game), just run it at 40 FPS. When not in a game, run it at 40 FPS. Theres no reason to have 60 FPS if youre just scrolling through menus. Turn haptic feedback off by default, and only use it for games you really want it for. It drains the battery. Save the planet and turn the lights off in the room when you're gaming on the Steam Deck so you can then turn the brightness of the screen down. If you are not using Blue Tooth, turn it off. The Steam Deck doesn't take that long to boot up, so if you know you're done gaming for the next couple hours, just turn it off rather than opting for sleep mode. So there are a few random tips.

    This is very interesting. I've always been fascinated by handhelds, especially portable game consoles. I'm very tempted to buy one because, with Windows and emulation, you could theoretically make this a portable 1-stop-shop for almost every video game. Even though I feel like it's a tiny bit unfinished, I will still probably get one, because it's not that expensive, taking into account it's basically a PC.

    Thanks for the great video - very informative! I am VERY seriously looking at getting the base model (it's all I can afford) and have a couple of questions (probably VERY newbie):
    - Emulation for PSP & PSVita: I have never done any emulation and am very intrigued by the ability to have the games from multiple systems available on the Steam Deck. I own tons of PSP games and a moderate number of PSV games. Is there a way to turn my owned games into roms so I can play them on the Steam Deck through the emulators?
    - Steam Deck Community: Are there particular groups you would suggest that I look at (or join) that you found particularly helpful?
    - The stickers you added to the touch pads: Where did you get them? Not only do I completely agree with the need for a more tactile surface on most things, they look cool and I want them!
    - Docking Station: You mentioned the 3rd party docking station and if my intention is to only play hand--held, is the docking station really necessary?
    Anyway, thanks for great video and I look forward to your answers.

      I am not the creator but I hope I can answer a few things:
      -if you have modded your PSV you can make your own ROMs of the physical cartridges you have. Those you should put on your computer. I am not sure about the PSP, but their modding community surely has something worked out. And of course there are any other ROMs available through other means
      -as always the Reddit community is always very helpful, plenty of threads about the Steamdeck and the emulators you want to work with. As far as Starter Guides, I'd recommend Retro Gamer Corps one. Everything is available at their website
      -those Track pad stickers are great, don't falsify the input and look great, they are part of every vinyl skin set on Amazon
      -a dock is not necessary per se, depending on what you want to do. If you want to play on your TV like with a switch, go get one. If you are primarily using it as a handheld, don't

    This was incredible video with so much thoughts given, thanks for that. So many people say Steam Deck is one of if not their favorite device for a long time, Im very intrigued to buy one once I save for the base model + 512gb sd card, even though I already have Switch Lite and gaming laptop, but I guess SD would make amazing companion to my laptop.
    My only big issue roght now is that its not possible rn to play game pass games (not streaming) on steam os, hopefully valve can sort this out with microsoft.

      I bought mine when they updated their website with the new oled, purchased on the 17 of November. The next day they start advertising the limited edition. 🤦🏾‍♂️. I would have bought that one. Im rarely in the position to buy something like this on time for "not steam 2" 😂 I freaking loving my Steam Deck experience. I happen to be writing the word experience the very moment the video Man said experience 😂😂🤣😂. Life, sometimes I wonder . 🎵🎶🎵🎶🎶🎶

    want to make a correction about the battery info at 44:35 when you compared the capacity to phones.
    while you got the mAh correct, you missed that it uses a 7.7v battery. so when compared to phones, it has more than double the capacity. for example, the pixel 7 pro's 5000mAh battery at 3.7v is only 18Wh, while the deck's battery is 40Wh.
    other than that, great review. i've been enjoying mine and like that it really is a pc in a handheld form, is not locked down like consoles. i have already upgraded the ssd, bought a generic hdmi hub and they both are working perfectly. really love how open valve has been about the device.
    only negatives for me the weight and battery capacity. nothing major for either one though, since it is very comfortable to hold and my 65watt battery is on its way.

    Hi. Nice vid and review! I have a very basic question (cos I've not been gaming for 20 odd years, and don't really understand how things work these days!) With the Steamdeck, do you connect it to the internet to download games from the Steam store, and save them on the device so you can play the game without being online? Or do you have to be online to play the games? Thanks for any info : )

    Great video so far (still watching)! Just wanted to point out for someone like me it's great to be able to dim the screen so much with the lowest brightness, my eyes are real sensitive to light particularly from screens and so for games like Dead Cells or Mario (just first 2 that came to mind) in complete darkness I think the lowest brightness is perfect combined with night mode

    Any tips for emulation.?
    Mainly adding textures or patches to ROMs?
    Currently when I try to go into the path from which the Texture packs would be loaded; the “directory” that should pull up doesn’t exist.
    Normally it should be Inside the .var folder, the dolphin-emu for example but for me it doesn’t exist.
    Anywho just finished your video thank you so much for your review

    At 28:00 I can definitely vouch for this. Before I got a case with a kickstand I'd rest it against a pillow on accident while it's downloading something and it would get pretty hot. My best advice is to invest in a kickstand and if it's ever idle to place it on a desk with the kickstand open so your deck won't overheat.

    Thanks for the video Nick! I'm still on the fence though, but MOST of it is personal use things, but the biggest thing is always battery life and fan noise. On a plane most have ports I can use for chargers or a battery back would be great use for that too, but would the fan noise be so loud that people on a plane would complain about the noise?
    Another question - could I have this as a PS5 replacement. Let's say I get a dock and a PS5 controller would I have a good experience using this on my TV as if it were my console?
    Thank you!

    Great review. Makes total sense if you have a big back log of games and a comfy couch. Steam can probably sale these at close to cost and make money off of the software sold in the Steam Store. A simple solution to not being close to an outlet is an extension cord. 👍

    After getting one of these amazing powerful handhelds there's no excuses for Nintendo PlayStation or Xbox to half ass any of their future handheld consoles. I damn near prefer this over any of the new big name brand consoles that's out today.

    Hi. Thanks for the video it's been a great help in my decision to buy a Steam Deck and you have a new sub. I was hoping you or one of the community could help. With emulation can it all be done on the Steam Deck or will I need access to a PC to help with emulation. Sorry I've never emulated before and I've never done PC gaming. Thanks for reading.

    Really enjoyed the video. Very informative as I’m planning on switching from an Xbox One S to the Steam Deck. How well does Fortnite run through Heroic? Would it be wise to use a separate Epic account instead of my main account to prevent being banned? Not sure if that’s a thing or not. I’m totally new to PC gaming.

    Just got one and pretty impressed, I'm not using Steamdeck for PC gaming since i own a gaming pc itself but Steamdeck is the best "Retro Handheld" you can ever get even today, almost a year since it's release, it basically can emulate everything perfectly from Atari 2600 towards Playstation 2, it even can Emulate PS3 and Nintendo Switch but many game suffer from compatibility issues.
