- In this video we will cover many basic techniques you need to know as a watercolor artist just starting out. These techniques take time and practice. Watercolor is all about patience and letting the watercolor paint itself. In this video we will learn more about timing and patience by moving through a triptych painting.
We will be painting three separate scenes so that we can mix colors and build layers while letting the previous scene dry. I am using a very basic color palette for this tutorial so you can learn more about mixing colors.
This is intended to give you a quick snippet into a BUNCH of tips, tricks, and basic techniques. I use Daniel Smith watercolors from the tube. In this video, I’m using Ultramarine Blue, Pthalo Blue, Raw Sienna, Cadmium Orange, Alizarin Crimson, and Burnt Sienna.
We will cover:
Wet on Wet and graded washes
Wet on dry and dry brushing techniques.
Flat washes
Loading your brush with paint and when to use less paint.
Drying time
Lifting out the paint with a paper towel and your brush
This video is inspired by the in-person beginning watercolor class I teach in Bellingham, WA. Use it as a reference to inspire you and come up with your own techniques!

So many techniques in a short video!
Even though I've been painting for years, I still return to these basic practices now and again. I recently forgot how to do mist as I hadn't painted it for years. A quick recap was all I needed. I often turn these practices into bookmarks as we're a family of bookworms. A hole punch, piece of ribbon and a message on the back is all that's needed. A new book to pop it in is great too! 😊
I told my class the exact same thing “these make great bookmarks!” They loved that idea 💪🏻
fun to watch and learn
