i really love how her writing has encouraged me to embrace the parts of humanity that are unspoken and typically induce uncomfortable feelings that have always been present within an individual but not ever properly articulated without shame. she's a mastermind when it comes to capturing the most complex aspects of existence and the emotions we've been incapable of putting words to, or have not had the guts to express.

I walked into Waterstones bookshop in Oxford and found a massive display of Convenience Store Woman on a table in the middle of the store. I thought to myself - oh, this is a book that has impressed these booksellers enormously. My hand reached to the top of the stack and took down what was to be the best reading experience that I’d had in many a year. What a gem. What a treasure. What a character. It still sits on my table like an icon of littérature that I will never remove in place of something else. I dust it everyday out of respect for what it is. Now to read the next book by this wonderful person.

Her book "Earthlings" really was some bizarre AF story, but she wrote it in such a way that it was impossible to put down. Like watching an impending train wreck

that she wrote to gods, that writing felt sacred, like her prayers to God - is so profound!

Thank you, Murata is evidence that what society calls weakness is harnessed strength for the individual. Beautiful and touching interview.

What a reflective interview. I love how she describes her thought and writing processes, the alchemy of imagination and humanness with the feral and the unconscious. It's good to know other people do have these kinds of processes with their imaginations and thoughts.

Love her and her writing! Thank you Louisiana Chanel for bringing such awesome interviews from authors for there aren't really many spaces for them to express their thinking processes behind the art. Sayaka must be the writer with whom I resonated the most. What a lovely, calm and beautiful person ❤

I've watched this video a few times now. Thank you so much! I read Convenience Store Woman and Earthlings about a year ago and I feel so deeply touched by them. Sayaka is incredible and I deeply resonate with much of what she speaks of. She's an amazing creator and writer, I really hope that her previous works also gets translated to English someday.

As I started listening to this interview I thought, wow what an amazing person I must read her stuff. So I searched her name and saw that she wrote Convenience Store Woman which I read a few years ago and liked very much. It was so well crafted and I admired the protagonist very much. I was delighted to know that I already knew of this amazing author and took this as a sign to reconnect with her work so I am borrowing Earthlings from the library and will be reading that too. I can't wait to delve into it!
