2005. I was in top notch hotel in China. We ordered some decent French wine and the manager delivered it himself. After uncorking, the wine turned out to he fake and foul. It became complete vinegar. The manager was the one who did the uncorking but he failed to see why we would not want to pay for it. He argued and the scene became really heated. In the end, they charged it on our room without our signatures and obviously without apologies. That taught me what to expect going forward.
In 2020, we drove from Atlanta to New York to pick up a case of specialty Pinot Noir from New Zealand. Upon opening the first bottle, we discovered that the wine was bad and turned to vinegar. The wine store was mortified and immediately refunded the case with no questions asked. They asked us to throw the remaining bottles away. Different cultures, apparently.

While it's possible to get good products from factories there you need to be extremely vigilant about every step of the process and then pretty much count on your product getting copied and resold with the copycat names as shown here. The worst thing I saw was a docu about the people who open the manholes for the sewers and collect the oil and fats floating on the surface. I heard years ago that in China it's not just accepted, but expected to try to cheat your customer; if the fraud isn't caught it's the customer's fault. *Not* trying to cheat your customer is considered poor business practice. While it's possible to get good products from factories there you need to be extremely vigilant about every step of the process and then pretty much count on your product getting copied and resold with the copycat names as shown here. Their reputation for garbage ripoff products is very well earned.

I am noy surprised. I live in NY. When I buy food, I never buy food that is made in China or from Chinese market. For Asian food, I buy from Korean or Taiwanese market.
Be careful if Chinese food labels themselves as made in Taiwan lol. I hope the regulators kept a watchful eye on correct import labels, but Chinese businessmen were known to operate in Taiwan.

Bought some beautioful looking garlic from a veggie market here in Australia. Took it home and something tasted very not right, like bleach or shampoo. Checked the packaging ... product of China. Dont eat at any Chinese restaurants in the US as well. We found out a Chinese restaurant in Beaumont, Texas, was taking uneaten food from someone's plate and giving it to another customer.
To be honest, I saw the same thing in a Korean restaurant too. The soup they gave me had some chopsticks paper cover inside. This is really depending on where you go.
